.... has failed to make the World Cup.
With their 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago, the United States has failed to advance to the 2018 World Cup. I'm upset and stunned. This is going to really bring down the fun of the World Cup for me and for many other Americans. What a damn shame.

This was all on Klinsmann's watch. Nobody should blame Arena for the team's troubles.
That said, that is shocking how much this team has fallen off.

He lost to T&T and Costa Rica, and drew with Honduras - of course he deserves some of the blame. It's quite hilarious that the US is given the most powderpuff qualification process because they are a big market with a lot of political power within FIFA but have still fucked up. We'll enjoy not having to put up with all the Americanisations and general cluelessness that comes from fans who only pay attention once every four years.

I'm going to miss paying attention in this World Cup, though.
I'm going to still watch, but I'm just not going to have the same feelings as the last 2 World Cups. This shit really blows.

I'm curious what it is about the CONCACAF system that makes it powderpuff? USA competed in the final stage of qualifying with what were the top 6 ranked countries in our region at the time of the draw. Whereas England competed in a group for 1.5 spots with teams that were ranked 10, 19, 28, 43, and 51. The teams in the final 6 of concacaf are playing a higher calibre opposition relative to their region than any other region in the world for qualifying. So, please explain the powderpuffness.

Who was it who qualified through your qualification group?
I feel your disappointment, I'm from the UK and am used to being let down by England's world cup let downs.

Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras, I think. I'm actually very interested to see what the Australian media/players think of being the away team in Honduras for the inter confed playoff. Watching the central american teams with their dirty tactics and time wasting is so frustrating. I don't think the average non Concacaf follower truly understand the challenges of playing in central america. I wonder if the Australian team will get the p[leasure of having piss bags thrown at them by the Honduran fans.

It might turn out to be a blessing in disguise in the long term, I thought the USA football team (or soccer as you guys call it) were on an upward spiral but obviously not.
My country England are constantly letting me and fellow fans down on the grand stage so I understand your pain, The qualifying group we qualified from to get to the world cup makes it look like we were awesome and like we are one of the favourites for the next world cup but the group was weak and we struggled against Lithuania and Malta grinding out narrow victories when we should be hammering teams like that with ease like Germany, Spain etc would no problem.
Hope that USA can use the failure to qualify as a learning curve for future and aim to develop youth players for the 2022 world cup as you should be up there with the top teams in world football by the size of your country and slow building popularity of soccer now.

I agree with most of these sentiments. However, I am Canadian, just an FYI. There are many things that are wrong with both the canadian and american soccer culture, and there is no easy fix. The primary issue is that soccer is at best the 5th most popular sport, so young players don't pursue it. Also, the culture of the top league and the systems of leagues that funnel into that league is not conducive to development. It's all about the $
