One of the biggest first world problems in gaming is that they're so many sales, birthdays etc. that inevitably you end up amassing a ridiculous backlog of games. I'm interested to know what everybody's situation is and if you ever plan on playing through those games at some point.
As for me, I just went through my collection spanning the SNES to the PS4 and right now I have 160 games on my backlog. That's spanning around 20+ years but that's a huge amount of games and has certainly made me think twice before going all in on the Steam sales. In 2019 I wasn't planning on buying too many games - Vesperia, KH3, Sekiro and Shenmue 3 were the big titles I was looking at, so this year I'll be trying to whittle down my pile of shame.

I've definitely learned a lesson from this first PS4 splurge. Games are so much more in-depth now, like TV series or movies or something. And they feel like they require such a great time commitment to get acclimated to the controls and then wade your way through the story. It'll probably take me a couple years to work through the half dozen batch of games I picked up. And then most of them I think hold most of their value in multiplayer. So it'll be a Sophie's Choice as far as picking which one to invest in when it comes to multiplayer player building. To top things off, I discovered you can just download free or cheap games. And of course my favorites so far have turned out to be some random free FPS and Unravel Two (since Wife surprised me by saying she wanted something to play together with me). The CoDs and Battlefields are sitting there with Wolfenstein looking like maybe not the smartest buy. Destiny 2 really hasn't done a great job hooking me. Red Dead is off to a really boring, slow start. The CAW system in WWE has become too complicated. And, if I'm being honest, I've had a few pangs of N64 homesickness. Oh well, I'm sure it's just getting started to all the new change. Maybe a year out from now I'll be devouring a new game on a weekly basis.

Because Best Buy took down My Gamers Club and Amazon has counter-responded with their services, the perk of getting almost 15 dollars off a game, sometimes 25 is now gone which makes me wait it out for games to drop in price. Of course there are exceptions and games I get Day one but now I can go after the backlog. I haven't touched the Yakuza or Phoenix Wright games for example, I have more Mega Man X games to go after, at least January this month to go after Kingdom Hearts: BBS and DDS. I got a lot happening.

Two years ago I went to a retro games fair with some friends and bought over £100s worth of Playstation games. Probably 15 games in total. That is a huge pile on the backlog. My Steam backlog has been growing for years. I find some interesting game on Steam, put it on my Wishlist, buy it when it comes on sale, never play it. For fun let's list my backlog.
In Progress Final Fantasy VII (Got to the Northern Cave then stopped for no particular reason. That was at least 6 months ago) Final Fantasy IV Advance (Just started) Omnibus (Fun arcade-style game on Steam. Check it out) DQVIII (A long haul game, I play it once every couple of weeks) Gremlins Inc. (Extremely addictive digital board game that's eating all my gaming time)
PSX/PS2 Alone In The Dark: New Nightmare Dino Crisis Disgaea Ico Kingdom Hearts I/II Obscure Resident Evil (OK I have the PC remake but I'm including it here because it's my list.) Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Resident Evil - Code Veronica X Samurai Warrior Second Sight Shadow Hearts: From The New World Shadow Of Memories Silent Hill 1/3/4 Sly Raccoon Tomb Raider I/II (played I many times but never got past the fourth level) Vagrant Story Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria Vexx XIII
Steam Deus Ex Divinity: Original Sin 2 Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Evoland F.E.A.R. 2/3 A Hat In Time High Hell Jotun: Valhalla Edition The Last Remnant LISA Rogue Legacy 3 Shantae games South Park: The Stick of Truth The Witcher 2/3 Yooka-Laylee
My Steam backlog isn't as large as I thought it'd be. Playstation on the other hand...might as well call myself a collector at this point

I’m the worst for this. I buy a heap of games then play 10mins of them and never touch them again. Getting better in recent times. To be fair I mostly play online games that you can’t really “finish” like Street Fighter V. I have the platinum trophy so I guess that counts 🤷🏻♀️. Listing my backlog would take forever so I’ll just do the opposite. Gris Star Wars: Battlefront II Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Call of Duty: WWII Dark Souls 3 Metal Gear Solid V GTA V Hitman (Season) Sonic Forces The Crash Bandicoot remasters Are the only games I’ve finished in recent years and the first 4 are short. I own hundreds of games so I really need to cut back.

Backlogs in anything can be overwhelming if you're not continuously chipping away at them. I think once the PS4 hit I gave up any previous gen hopes of tackling games I had not played and would only do so if say a remake/remaster happened. Sadly I had already beaten Spyro when I first got a PS3, so I had no need for the release. But if I hadn't that would've been a go for me.

Counting games on my shelf I haven't got to since I bought them, the Bioshock collection, Dark Souls 1-3, Devil May Cry 1-4, Horizon Zero Dawn (complete edition), Shenmue 1-2, and Sleeping Dogs all for the PS4; with Hollow Knight, Salt and Sactuary, and Celeste waiting for me in digital. I also have the Splinter Cell collection (up to Double Agent), the Sly Cooper Collection, the Prince of Person trilogy, the Jak trilogy, and both Ninja Gaiden games on the PS3. Also just picked up Gun and the Punisher for PS2. Haven't gotten around to the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii either.
Currently making my way through the Kingdom Hearts games, have all but the first one to go. After that, probably hit DMC 1-4 so I can get to 5.
And that's just the games I own, there's a whole slew of things I've yet to get to, like the Doom reboot, Hitman season 1 (which I only beat 1 or two levels) and 2, Assassin's Creed 3 and on, and many MANY more.

Forgot Fallout 4, I did that thing where I bought it because it was on sale, but it'll probably be even cheaper by the time I actually play it. I've started building my library for if a day comes I can no longer stay on point, so for the first time ever, I've got a shit ton of things I haven't played since I bought them.

Currently finishing Fallout 4 DLC with my GOTY edition. Only one left is Nuka World but got side track with settlements again. Far Harber was pretty amazing so hoping Nuka World can at least meet it greatness.
I still would kinda like to see Zestiria to the end. But besides it soundtrack Beseria is just so much better and I probably would just play that again.
I still need to finish Monster Hunter World too.
