Figured I'd lump all the pre-92 stuff together in one thread since I doubt we will have many takers. I wouldn't be shocked if this is the only pre-92 SuperCard MashUp I attempt. But 1989 NWA needed to be done since it's my favorite wrestling until 1993 WWF.
1989 NWA- Clash of the Champions: We Wrestle
There was but one debate in this one: Flair vs. Steamboat or Flair vs. Funk? I initially tried Flair/Steamboat @wrestle War w/ the post match accounting for Funk's lone appearance. But Terry bah gawd Funk not having a match on a 1989 NWA SuperCard didn't sit well with me. Plus I couldn't find a decent 10th match. So I switched it up to Flair/Funk and then that 10th match fell into place. Without further ado....
1. Midnight Express vs. Dynamic Dudes (Clash of the Champions 11/15) A great moment as the Philly crowd pops huge for Cornette finally rejecting the Dynamic Dorks to come back home with Beautiful Bobby & Sweet Stan. And all was right with the world.
2. Brian Pillman vs. Norman (Clash of the Champions 9/12) A shockingly good big vs. little match that my brother actually turned me onto a year or two ago. He found some gems for a guy who barely watched wrestling after like 1991 (aside from a 95-96 reinterest, of course). Anyway, Pillman was the hot young up and comer of the day while Norman was basically an overweight heel Eugene being lead astray by that jerk Teddy Long. Forgot about him for years but I had a soft spot for Norman back in the day. I'd have been all in on a Rick Steiner & Norman dimwitted babyface tag team. Shut up.
3. Eddie Gilbert vs. Barry Windham (Saturday Night 1/14- US Title Match) Gets both of these old school heroes on the show. Plus it's Important as this would lead directly to a tag match w/ Flair & Windham vs. Gilbert & his mystery partner who turned out to be none other than Ricky Steamboat. So it's fair say the seeds for the legendary 1989 Flair/Steamboat feud were planted here.
4. Dr. Death Steve Williams vs. Mike Rotunda (Clash of the Champions 9/12) Varsity Club explodes! :verysad: Hey, not even 1989 NWA was perfect. Doc & Captain Mike had a bunch of matches. This was the blowoff.
5. Jim Cornette vs. Paul E. Dangerously (Greatest American Bash 7/23- Tuxedo Match) Great sports entertainment spectacle. Basically a McMahon match before McMahon's had matches. In fact, this was just about universally acclaimed as the greatest match involving non-wrestlers until those aforementioned McMahon's finally stepped inside the squared circle.
6. Doom vs. Steiner Brothers (Halloween Havoc 10/28) Tag team hossfest.
7. Great Muta vs. Sting (Greatest American Bash 7/23- TV Title Match) And thus began the GOAT young lions feud. Muta was an astronaut and Sting was like the Ultimate Warrior with actual ability. Even back in the day as dumb kid I knew these two were something special.
8. Lex Luger vs. Ricky Steamboat (Greatest American Bash 7/23- US Title Match) Lex killed it in 1989 both in ring and as a character while Steamboat had probably the best big show year of any wrestler ever going 5 for 5 on Clashes & PPVs. Subbed this gem in for the similar Luger/Pillman Havoc match once I decided to go with Flair/Funk instead of Flair/Steamboat.
9. Road Warriors vs. Skyscrapers (Halloween Havoc 10/28) We've been on a hoss team kick of late what with all those APA matches I've been reviewing and now the Fire & Ice chatter. Well, this is in the running for the ultimate tag team hossfest. It was like two Goldberg's vs. two Brock's.....or two 1998 Undertaker's vs. two 1998 Kane's might be a better description considering their roles as veteran irresistible forces meeting young immovable objects.
10. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk (Greatest American Bash 7/23- NWA Title Match) Always preferred this to their more famous I Quit match but you can't go wrong here with any of Flair's 5 big matches vs. Steamboat & Funk. This was my favorite match ever for a while and it's still up there. Do yourself a favor and watch two of the GOATs strut their stuff.
*Killer card as expected considering 1989 NWA is the pinnacle of old school wrestling. The only people I feel the slightest bit guilty about leaving off are the Samoan Swat Team, but War Games was out of the questions due to having people I had other plans for, and none of their matches with the Midnights bring the sheer joy of MX vs. Dudes.

Nicely done, Baker-man! (Random FYI, I always say this in my head like Pillman said "bookerman".) I'll delve into this more tonight, but I feel like 1991 WWF might be able to produce a solid SuperCard MashUp.

Nicely done, Baker -man! (Random FYI, I always say this in my head like Pillman said "bookerman".) I'll delve into this more tonight, but I feel like 1991 WWF might be able to produce a solid SuperCard MashUp. Challenge accepted, sir. 1991 WWFThis came much easier than expected. In fact, it was only a Hercules away from being perfect. This show has a few classic matches, some personal markout moments, a few normal people markout moments, and a heavy dose of glorious sports entertainment. No time for comments on each individual match right now. May be back to edit them in later. Coliseum Home Video Exclusive: British Bulldog vs. Warlord (Wrestlemania 3/24) 1. Rockers vs. Orient Express (Royal Rumble 1/19) 2. Big Bossman vs. Mountie (Summerslam 8/26- Jailhouse Match) 3. Earthquake & Nasty Boys vs. Tugboat & Bushwhackers (Superstars 6/15) 4. Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Sgt. Slaughter (The Main Event 2/1- WWF Championship Match) 5. Legion of Doom vs. Power & Glory (Wrestlemania 3/24) 6. Virgil vs. Ted Dibiase (Summerslam 8/26- Million Dollar Championship Match) 7. Jake Roberts vs. Rick Martel (Wrestlemania 3/24- Blindfold Match) 8. Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect (Summerslam 8/26- IC Title Match) *Funeral Parlor w/ Ric Flair (Superstars 9/21)9. Undertaker vs. Hulk Hogan (Survivor Series 11/27- WWF Championship Match)10. Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage (Wrestlemania 3/24- Retirement Match)*The Superstars 6 man tag features the birth of the Natural Disasters. *I'm not thrilled with Slaughter/Duggan but felt like I needed to get WWF Champion Sarge on the show. *Chose Undertaker beating Hogan over Hogan beating Slaughter for fanboy reasons. *The Flair promo is awesome and awfully shooty for 1991.

Holy shit, that's amazing, Baker. I feel like your few comments make sense, and really no others are needed as all other selections are pretty self-explanatory. I dig and get the approach for working Flair onto the card. Out of curiosity, were any of his matches with Piper taped/televised? And/or, to play devil's advocate, let's say you go with one of the Hogan/Flair matches that were taped (and aired on MSG Network, right?) as a dream match main event... what do you do with 'Taker instead in such a scenario? Too bad 'Taker vs. 'Zerker didn't go down in '91... a near-miss murder would've been a decent backup to tombstoning Hogan onto a steel chair.

🤯I've seen it discussed, but has there been a definitive ruling on matches that took place December, but aired in January? What date to use?

🤯 I've seen it discussed, but has there been a definitive ruling on matches that took place December, but aired in January? What date to use? It's a gray area. I prefer to use air date in most cases since 99.9% of fans wouldn't have seen or even known the results of (at least until the late 90s) a December tv taping. The big exception being ECW Arena shows since people like me who didn't get hardcore TV would have bought the tape labeled December 29th or whatever. Luckily it hasn't been a problem for me yet. I thought it might be with the Rock/Foley title switch but that never even came close to making my 98 or 99 cards. 🤯 The obvious choice for an alternative Undertaker match is his squash of Snuka at Wrestlemania. There's also a surprisingly good Taker vs. Warrior Bodybag Match that was on a Coliseum Home Video or MSG Network or something like that but that's a non-factor because nobody is going to a 1991 WWF SuperCard without Warrior/Savage.

If I didn't DQ you for the Taker/Yoko match in '94 and didn't DQ Bake for having some SuperCard MashUps with multiple WWF/IC title matches (or for calling me cute ), I'm not DQing you for a match that was either taped the previous year and aired in the subject year or vice versa. I have full faith in Kilgore Discretion™.

I was going to do 1986, but ran into a 1986 or 1987 dilemma. Moved onto 1990, where I found another one.
1990 WWF
The Rockers vs. The Powers of Pain (1/15/90) Didn't see this until the PW era, but one of my favorite Rockers matches.
Rick Martel vs. Koko B. Ware (Wrestlemania: 4/01/90) Unfortunately, Martel's best match was against Tito Santana, who I'm using in an even better match, so this will have to do to get him on the card.
Ronnie Garvin vs. Greg The Hammer Valentine (Royal Rumble: 1/21/90) One one hand, both of these guys had really great reputations in the 80s, but on the other, I still have no idea why this was so good.
Big Bossman vs. Akeem (SNME: 04/23/90) It was (a little) better than their WM match.
Ted DiBiase vs. Jake Roberts (Wrestlemania: 4/1/90) Unextraordinary, but solid.
Mr. Perfect vs Tito Santana (Superstars: 4/23/90) They had another match on SNME that was good, but I like the IC Finals match on Superstars a little better.
Demolition vs. The Hart Foundation (Summerslam 8/27/90) I forget which match this was other than it was really, really good.
Macho King Randy Savage vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan (SNME: 1/27/90) The Macho King year is generally kind of a lost year for the Madness, but this one was pretty good.
Roddy Piper vs. Rick Rude (MSG Cage Match) First of all, this was a great cage match. Rude literally bumped his ass off, and they do the Hogan/Orndorff finish (which will eventually be an 86 or 87 dilemma of its own), before Piper eventually wins. Now, it took place December 28th, 1989. Most people didn't see it until a Coliseum Home Video release in the summer of 1990, though. Controversy (Prince voice).
Hulk Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior (Wrestlemania: 4/1/90) The Ultimate Challenge is the Ultimate Closer.
Who knew 1990 was so good? That's six matches that are close to 4 stars are above. In the WWF. In 1990.

Are you saying Valentine/Garvin WAS good and it's just hard to grasp why given where each guy was at by 1990? Or are you saying that it's a beloved gem of a match to most, but not to you, and you don't know why others think it's good?

They both had seen better days, I'm not sure either had a super quality match afterwards. There was next to reason for it to be as good as it was.

For a second, I was worried we were gonna have to have words! I remember sifting through some older WWF stuff that I'd missed some years back, and stumbling upon this match and having my mind blow because of where my mindset was at headed in and what the match ended up delivering.

I have an odd fascination with the AWA just before Hogan jumped to the WWF. It was such a stacked roster, in such a hot territory, it just feels like one of the biggest missed opportunities ever. I read through some AWA results in 1983. I have no idea if any of these matches are good. They probably aren't. That didn't really matter in 1983, though.
AWA ProtoMania: We Should've Been The WWF!
Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell vs. Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan (Cage Match) (1/14/83) Their hottest tag team feud of the year, and I picked the cage match because fuck yeah, this is a supercard. You don't even have to wait for us to put up the cage. It's the first match of the night. Enjoy some blood.
Tully Blanchard vs. Scott Casey (5/27/83) Tully had two matches in the AWA, so by god, I'm using one of them.
Wendi Richter & Joyce Grable vs. Judy Martin & Velvet McIntrye (4/24/83) Hogan and Wendi Richter the year before they both were on MTV for Vince. Ouch. Hopefully Judy Martin powerbombed somebody, or threw somebody onto a table, or a spectator, because she ruled like that.
"Dr. D" David Shultz vs. Baron Von Raschke (7/23/83) I've always had a soft spot for the good doctor. Taking out news reporters, bleeding buckets of blood every single night. I imagine blood was spilled here.
Rick Martel vs. Billy Robinson (3/24/83) This is our Macho vs. Steamboat. It was a draw, which is kind of lame, but it was probably state of the art in its day.
"Mad Dog" Vachon vs. "The Crippler" Ray Stevens (10/19/83) Those are certainly some names.
"Superstar" Billy Graham vs. Blackjack Lanza (11/10/83) That's right, the AWA has the should be WWF champion, while they lose money every year with Howdy fucking Doody instead.
Jerry Lawler vs. Ken Patera (2/12/83) Granted, I've seen very little, but Patera sucked way less in the AWA. Lawler probably made it work.
Andre the Giant vs. Nick Bockwinkel (11/11/83) It's insane that I'm not picking the Super Sunday Bockwinkel vs. Hogan match, where Hogan's entrance has one of the greatest pops of all time, but we're not going to let Verne fuck a finish up on my AWA supercard, so we'll match Bockwinkel up against another legend instead.
Hulk Hogan vs. Jesse "The Body" Ventura (2/12/83) I always thought of Hogan and Ventura as the good and bad twins. They both got the skullet, fantastic facial hair, big peaks, big promos. One's got a blonde handlebar mustache and is good. The other has a dark one and is bad. This match was probably horrendous, but two of the biggest names of the 80s, and Hogan wins (for real) sending everybody home happy.
