This is the thing I'm the most fucking stoked about in my life right now so it's totally getting it's own thread that I can spam to death. News has been coming out about this for the last few weeks and it's like a dream come true as I'm as big a fan of Sega(especially the Genesis) as I am of ECW or Pantera or the Houston Oilers. This was announced like last year but they revealed that a third party called "AT Games" was going to produce it. This was a major crushing blow because AT Games makes a lot of crappy Genesis clones over the years. But things changed, Sega fired AT Games and delayed the release to September of this year. This is huge and I don't think people realize it fully but this Mini will be first party made console by Sega, their first console they've made since the Dreamcast 20 years ago. This is full on return from Sega, check out the official site with that fucking GLORIOUS Sega Genesis Seal Of Quality and also the "Made by SEGA, Genesis Mini delivers quality as only a 1st party product can" line: genesismini.sega.com/And Sega has gone all in with this. They've hired M2 to handle all emulation and interface for the thing. That's huge. And then there was the games. There will be 40, they've only revealed 20 so far and they are: Ecco the Dolphin Castlevania: Bloodlines Space Harrier 2 Shining Force Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Toe Jam & Earl Comix Zone Sonic the Hedgehog Altered Beast Gunstar Heroes Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Earthworm Jim Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Thunder Force III Super Fantasy Zone Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master Streets of Rage 2 Contra Hard Corps Landstalker Ok so they've got some big licensed games in there that I would have never thought they could get for a thing like this, including the two Mickey Mouse platformers World and Castle of Illusion along with Landstalker, and the Konami classics Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania Bloodlines. That's fucking excellent! I'll be pre ordering this soon, also excited about what other games they will announce. Any predictions?

Love the two Sonic games (even if they've been re-released to death), and Konami will be releasing Castlevania, and Contra collections on the Switch, so while those are all great games they won't be a selling point for me. What will however, are the two Micky Mouse games you mentioned, as well as Earthworm Jim (loved this game back in the day).
it'll be interesting to see what the other twenty games are, that'll be released with the Sega Genesis Mini.

Honestly the coolest thing about these minis consoles is the box. Looks so damn sexy.

While I do love my SNES Classic, I really like the fact the Sega Genesis Mini, will have twice as many games on it, than the SNES Classic did. There were quite a few SNES games I wanted to see on the mini system, that just didn't make the cut for whatever reason, so it's nice to see this will have double the amount of games.

Going to be really nice to play some of those with a fresh crisp brand new first party Sega Genesis controller.
So far so good with the games. I guess Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is kinda a waste of space but if you need a puzzle game. My complaint would be Thunderforce III instead of IV, which is way better. Maybe Thunderforce IV will be one of the 20 yet to be announced, which would seem kinda redundant to include both.
I seen the Japanese version of this is getting Musha, we better be getting that shit.
The Mickey games are good. My niece loves World Of Illusion it's got to be one of the better multiplayer games on the system or of the whole 16 bit era.
Most stoked about Contra Hard Corp being on there really, that game is so great.
Space Harrier II also seems kind of a waste, if you are going to go that route why not throw on the 32X version of the original arcade game? Surely it wouldn't take anything for this thing to emulate 32X. But since M2 is handling this I'm thinking they may throw in the Genesis versions of Outrun and Afterburner II, which would be cool, the Genesis port of Outrun is pretty sweet.
Need Capcom to get involved and if they did I'd expect Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition as well as Ghouls & Ghosts and possibly Strider.
Also looking forward to loading more roms on this thing for all the good stuff but IF I could pick what the next 20 would be I'd go with:
Alien Soldier- needs 6 buttons so I doubt we see this Phantasy Star IV- probably a lock to be in the next 20 Sonic 3+Sonic & Knuckles- Sega has licensing issues with music for this so doubtful MUSHA- Mega Drive version has this, US version better or I'll be pissed! Revenge Of Shinobi- Yuzo Koshiro is doing music for menus and stuff so maybe there's a chance Shadowdancer- It's been left off other compilations recently but SHOULD be on this NBA Jam- Probably not going to happen Road Rash III- Need EA to get in on this and even then EA has licensing issues with music Greatest Heavyweights- Probably not going to happen but would rule, best 16 bit boxing game Splatterhouse 3- Need Namco to get in on this, even then this is not family friendly so doubtful Golden Axe- probably a lock to be in the next 20 Crusader Of Centy- Don't know who own's this but would love to see it on there, one of few great RPGS Robocop vs Terminator- They got Mickey Mouse so why the hell not? Monster World IV(translated to Engrish)- I'm sure it's possible Sunset Riders- Konami gave us Contra and Castlevania so why not? This would be great Outrun 2019- because it's fucking 2019 and this game rules! Alisia Dragoon- Not sure of the status of this one Strider- Need Capcom to get in on this, one of the defining games of the system early days needs to be here Gain Ground- Strong chance to be in the next 20, I hope so because I love this Alladin- If you got the Disney licensed Mickey games surely they can get this right?

The controller I think will be much better with this one. If I recall the system didn't run well with that too Kid.
Might very well be interested but few notes....
1) Shame its not Earthworm Jim 2 and not 1 because EJ2 is unavailable anywhere on the current consoles. At least EJ1 had a remake for XBOX Live.
2) GIVE me both Mystic Defender and Truxton please. Two underrated gems for the Genesis. Doubt they will be in it but I can dream.
If this system can at all get some form of Game Genie that would be cool too. I know it takes the hard out of the games but damn some cheat codes because of Game Genie were grand. Kid Chameleon for example was great with Game Genie knowing you weren't going to lose everything on some of the most difficult levels by end game.

The Konami and Disney games are huge inclusions for the system. M2 are the masters of emulation and the Sega Ages compilations they've been releasing for over two decades at this point have set the industry standard.
Unfortunately Sega's ingenuity has prevented it from receiving the attention it deserves. This is a wonderful collection of games and I expect the next batch will be as good if not better. However, Sega have been releasing these collections for nearly a decade so it's kind of old hat at this point. Despite potentially being better than the SNES package (Sega still has to announce the next batch of games), I don't think the system is going to be as huge. Despite owning a lot of the SNES games already, the appeal of that console was finally being able to play a bunch of NTSC exclusives with SNES controllers and having that authentic experience. Unless it came with Shadowrun, Warsong, Crossfire, Splatterhouse 3, Langrisser II it won't have the same appeal.
Then again, if it included Aladdin...

Interesting to note like the SNES Mini and the PS1 Classic, there's region differences between the US and Japan.
Japan will receive Powerball (Wrestleball in JP), Madou Monogatari Ichi (A dungeon crawler RPG), Rent-A-Hero (an RPG with 2D Fighting combat) and Puyo Puyo 2.

Do you buy cheap knock off clothes at Kohls too? I buy shorts there, yeah! And love them! That's the difference in this Genesis and the ones that have been released before like the one you bought at Kohls, this one is the real deal, the others are like buying some fake Nike shorts that are just cheap garbage with the Nike name sewn on them.

10 more games announced last week:
Mega Man: The Wily Wars Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition Ghouls ‘n Ghosts Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle Beyond Oasis Golden Axe Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball Vectorman Wonder Boy in Monster World
Kind of a mixed bag on this batch. Street Fighter 2 is like my favorite game ever but I've just never been a big fan of the Genesis "Special Champion Edition", I much prefer the SNES version of regular old Street Fighter 2. If I play any Genesis Street Fighter it's the one with Cammy, T-Hawk, Dee Jay, and Fei Long, that one is pretty sweet.
Also not crazy about Mega Man: The Wily Wars. They butchered the NES classics pretty good for that, especially fucked off the music for Mega Man 2, the games just don't have the same charm without those 8 bit graphics and that 2 button NES controller.
I do think it's cool that Ghouls N Ghosts was included. This was a pretty major game in the story of the Genesis console since it was really the first big hit third party game released after Sega had made major inroads in loosening Nintendo's grip on third party developers. That's the element of the Sega story that always appealed to me, the way they stood up to a pretty stout Nintendo monopoly and took them on head on the way they did. That's so me.
I dig all the 1989 launch titles being included, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Ghouls N Ghosts, Space Harrier II, and Alex Kidd. That class of games has a certain charm to them that I really dig, these were the first generation Genesis games released in a pretty unique time in the industry, the SNES was still 2 years away in the USA, so the Genesis was like the NES on steroids with even more of an "arcade on your home TV" vibe to it.
Beyond Oasis and Phantasy Star IV are two of the best games for the system, glad they will be included on this set. Vectorman is pretty decent too.
Not really the biggest fan of the Wonder Boy games.
Sonic Spinball is total garbage, what a waste of a spot, there are a lot of other games in Sega's catalog that could take this spot that probably won't(Shadow Dancer!)
If I had my way the next 10 to be announced would be:
Road Rash III Alien Soldier Musha Sonic 3+Sonic & Knuckles together as one game the way it's supposed to be Revenge Of Shinobi(how cool it would be if they released the original version with Batman/Godzilla/Spiderman/Hulk/Rambo etc) Shadow Dancer Gain Ground Outrun Strider Crusader Of Centy

It's still good to see Capcom come to the table for this. They've released so many of these compilations at this point, they needed a point of difference so to include three big Capcom IPs which were huge in their time is a big bonus.
I would like to see a Mortal Kombat port and Disney's Aladdin in the next batch. Two games that were a huge part of Sega's branding.
Also give me a sports title.

As someone who is probably one of the worst Mega Man players ever, I was getting upset at Kenny taking damage like that. But I also forgot it's a lot harder to play and concentrate in front of someone, especially if you're also tasked with having a dialogue going. I had so many damn retakes when I did my lets plays on the old board.

I just think it's terrible what they(the developers) did to Metal Man stage music in that Genesis 16 bit remake(Wily Wars), it's like of all the tunes you can fuck up you ruin that one? Get the fuck outta here

GameSack has a review up. The coolest feature by far is that you can change the language to Japanese and it changes all the box arts over to the Japanese version and even includes those versions of the rom.
The only bummer is that one of Joe's controllers didn't work and a lot of games, especially the fighters, seemed to be designed for the six button controller and you have to buy some third party model to play it. He dug the selection of games for the most part, except for the fighters and the unreleased games were pretty underwhelming.
Hopefully the controller is just an anomaly.

No word as of yet, keep in mind they only just went out to social media influencers like GameXplain, Happy Console Gamer etc. so they're not going to touch on that.
It's safe to say that they'll crack it within days and by then it'll be easy enough to set up without bricking your console.
What games are you going to add?
Also, if you want to get into the nitty gritty of the console, I'd recommend checking out this video:
These are issues I'd hardly notice, but it's worth knowing what you're getting yourself into.

If possible I'd like to have the full complete set of Genesis roms. How many roms can be put on a NES or SNES mini? If there is a limit my priorities would be MUSHA and Alien Soldier right off the bat, the Sonic 3 and Sonic And Knuckles combined game rom would be nice, Road Rash 3, Robocop vs Terminator, Sunset Riders, Greatest Heavyweights, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, Crusader Of Centy, and of course rev 1.0 of Revenge Of Shinobi and might as well throw Shadow Dancer on there as well. And I'd like to have the Madden games and maybe some NBA Live too especially if they will work with save states, my cartridges for those have all dead batteries so you can't save anything anymore(and replacements I've bought all have dead batteries as well). I don't have any of the current gen systems to play the Gen compilations so this will be nice to be able to play some Genesis through HDMI with a name brand controller(not my knockoff USB controller through my laptop hooked up to my TV).

I doubt you'll be able to fit a full rom-set, if it's anything like the SNES classic, you'll only be able to add 20 more games. Technically you could add more, but then you had to compromise features on the console to fit them in like save states so it wasn't really worth it. Of course you can get rid of games you don't want so you can mix and match for it fit your tastes.
If it ever goes on sale, I'll have to pick up the compilation on the Switch. I still find myself from time to time going back to the 360 just to get my fix. I had such a blast playing through Shining Force I and II last year, easily among my favourite retro games of all-time.

Shining Force is about as relaxing of a video game there is to play. I reckon I'll make my way through it again with this mini. I'm getting tickets to Tash Sultana in Dallas on the 18th, it's a Wednesday night so I'm taking off work that Thursday the 19th, I'm planning on picking one of these up and spending the day with it. Ok so if it's like the SNES I probably wouldn't take any games off, even though Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik Mean Bean Machine are worthless and there really is no need to have Columns if you got Tetris. So if I can only add 20 games I'd go with these: MUSHA Alien Soldier Splatterhouse 2 Splatterhouse 3 Adventures Of Batman & Robin Rolling Thunder 3 Rocket Knight Adventures Outrun Crusader Of Centy Robocop vs Terminator X-Men 2 Sunset Riders Skitchin Gleylancer NBA Live 98 Madden 94 Madden 95 Madden 96 Madden 97 Madden 98

It seems like this is taking longer to mod than the SNES Classic. From memory that was cracked in less than a week, but here we're a month in and they're still trying to finalise their mod.
Still, they're making nice headway on it. Apparently the system runs at 1.00GHZ, so they're bumping that up so games won't suffer from having any lag spikes. They also believe they can get SEGA CD and 32X games working on the system so everyone can have the best of both worlds.
I'll keep this thread posted as soon as something pops up.
