We're well and truly entering a video game drought. From now until September, the number of quality releases is going to be less and less before it builds up once again.
There's two games that interest me this month. The first is Rage 2 which from some of the previews looks really colourful and full of life. Of course a carefully curated gaming session can make a game look a lot better than it is, but it piqued my interest. Did anyone play the original Rage?
The other is Team Sonic Racing. If it's anything like the predecessors, you have your Mario Kart 8 challenger, which as some of you may know is one of my favourite game of all-time. I put in over a 100 hours into the Wii U version and I always find kart racers to be a lot of fun to play.

Wow. I honestly thought that small list was your personal picks! Never played any of the other Sega racers, but I may check this one out. I really didn't like MK8 as much as most people do. Loved the WiiU one, despite not many liking it either.

Just Rage 2 this month, first Rage was sufficient, though unremarkable. Hopefully the sequel can refine it and fulfill the promise the first showed. Made by the same people who did Mad Max, so hopefully they rectified the "too reptitive" con of that one and made the awesom vehicle combat even better.

For the month of May, maybe nothing... maybe Bubsy: Paws on Fire! and Sonic Team Racing.
Honestly, I'm kinda indifferent at the moment on both games, which mind you isn't necessarily a bad thing, as I'm still making my way through FF VII on the Switch, in between playing Cuphead and MK 11 as well.

Where are you up to on your Switch collection now, Lony? On last count wasn't it at least a dozen games? And you'd barely owned it over a year? @ness I should dig some more, but on GameFAQs nothing really stood out and Metacritic confirmed how scarce this month was going to be. I think my deal with Mario Kart on Wii is that it was the most generic entry since Super Circuit on GBA. Compared to 64 which went from driving around go-kart themed levels to straight up theme parks and Double Dash which had the fun double kart racer theme going, 6 was fairly straight forward with the motorbikes and driving alongside ramps. I also seem to remember the courses being pretty ordinary? 4-6 good levels, the rest being fairly straight forward? Also WiiU wasn't coming off Mario Kart DS which was my favourite of the entire franchise. RagnarokMike was there any one given moment in Rage that stood out? My impression is that it's a 7/10 FPS and I just never got around to playing it. I should raid one of those pre-owned bins and give it a look.

I literally can't remember anything but some random flashes of gameplay, I played it the week it came out, and never again. I do remember enjoying it well enough, but also remember it missing some marks, 7/10 sounds about right.

Where are you up to on your Switch collection now, Lony? On last count wasn't it at least a dozen games? And you'd barely owned it over a year? Almost three times that amount of games (thirty-three games), and yeah I picked up my Switch last June (maybe July, it was one of those months). Honestly, I kinda went crazy, buying all the big name games for the system, during the first six months or so of owning the Switch. Physical Games Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Crash Bandicoot Trilogy DKC: Tropical Freeze Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Hyrule Warriors Deluxe Edition (I hear there is a Fire Emblem one that's kinda the same) Kirby Star Allies Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Lego Marvel Super-Heroes 2 Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (decent enough game) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition (one of my fave games on the system) Mario Tennis Aces (I've still yet to play it) Minecraft(my nephew plays it when he visits) Mega Man 11 Monster Boy: The Cursed Kingdom My Hero's One Justice (had it on PS4, though my bro bought me a copy on the Switch) New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Octopath Traveler Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu Pokken Tournament Rayman Legends Sonic Mania Plus Splatoon 2 Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection (only picked it up when I got the Switch as it was a cheap game) Super Mario Odyssey (Absolutely love this game) Super Mario Party (wish there were more game boards to choose from) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (main reason I don't play Street Fighter as often as I once did) Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap Yoshi's Crafted World
Digital Games Cuphead Final Fantasy VII Fortnite (again my nephew plays it when he visits) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Tetris 99

I don't think the official date was announced, when this thread went up, but for sure getting... Castlevania Anniversary Collection, which drops May 16th. I've been looking forward to this, since it was first announced (along with the Contra Anniversary Collection), as someone that loves old school gaming, this is right up my ally.

I don't usually include compilations or ports since they usually don't bring anything to the table.
The Castlevania compilation looks great though and it's nice to see Konami jump back in after their awesome Metal Gear Solid compilation. In the early 00s it was a nightmare trying to keep up with the series, especially since some of the better games were annoyingly rare or unavailable in the west. Even Symphony of the Night which is heralded as the best game on the PS1 was nigh on impossible to play in my neck of the woods.
Hopefully they get on board with a Suikoden and Silent Hill compilation.

Getting Plague Tales for sandylea on Wednesday. Interested to see what it’s like. This is the part of the year where I think “hmm nothing I want comes out I should start saving for the tonne of games in Oct/Nov” then I never do it.

I'll check a Plague Tale eventually, just got a full docket at the moment, and would like to see the reception, looked like a real wild card of a game, just a step outside of the norm.

It’s honestly fantastic, I’m not too far into it yet but I’m completely drawn into the story and gameplay. Usually I’m not a fan of stealth games but I really enjoy the aspect of it in this, plus the bond between sister and brother is enjoyable to discover as you play along

Did anyone get access to the Nioh 2 Alpha?
No such luck down here despite spending 180 hours on the game and getting all the trophies for the base game and the DLC. The thought of some internet personality who only played three levels and quit getting access ahead of me bothers me, but hey you've got to appeal to the millenials. Nioh 2 or as some of the testers are calling it 'same old shit' doesn't really add a lot new to the formula. You've got a summon system, a dark world system and a few different things to play with but from looks of it, it's basically DLC.
I was watching FightingCowboy's stream and his basic view was that the game felt too easy because they re-used a lot of enemies from the original, so the game lacked the tension he felt during his initial playthrough of Nioh. Personally I loved Nioh since it was my first proper SoulsBourne play-through, but if there was one universal issue it's that the game got very repetitive. A lot of missions in the game just required you to go through gauntlets of enemies, including one mission where you fought every single enemy type in the game and every single mini-boss.
Hopefully Team Ninja take the feedback on board and introduce more mechanics as the game goes on. Personally I'm OK with it being more Nioh, but that approach would surely make it pale in comparison to the first.

I don't see Metroid or Castlevania in Axiom Verge but everybody and their dog refer to it as a Metroidvania.
