As we reported earlier this weekend, WWE legend Chris Jericho recently took a few shots at New Japan Pro Wrestling star and current IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega.

It looks like the six-time world champion didn’t take too kindly to people calling Omega the greatest pro wrestler from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The beef continued with the Bullet Club leader tweeting, “Never meet your heroes folks, lest they be a corporate stooge.” Even the NJPW English commentary team has gotten involved in the dispute, with former WWE star (and fellow Winnipeg native) Don Callis arguing in favor of Kenny Omega and continuing to stir the pot.


Y2J then took to Twitter to go on a “rampage” against all kinds of wrestling fans; even a few that seemed to be defending him. Well, we’ve got news for you internet: you’re probably being worked.

While ProWrestling.com can’t confirm anything as a lock at this point, I have personally heard from multiple sources within NJPW that there was at least talk of bringing in Jericho to work a match at the upcoming Wrestle Kingdom event on January 4th. One source noted to me several months ago that they were in the planning stages of “something big” involving an outside talent to face Kenny Omega.

We should have more information for you in the coming weeks, but it’s potentially worth pointing out that Kazuchika Okada and Tetsuya Naito are already booked to face each other in the Wrestle Kingdom main event. With Omega being one of the promotion’s top draws, and the likely face of New Japan’s planned western expansion in 2018, it makes a degree of sense to bring in a major name with recent WWE accreditation for the biggest show of the year. We’ll keep you posted.

Honestly, Jericho vs Omega would be a massive disappointment at Wrestle Kingdom. It would draw the interest and the headlines, but the match quality would be pretty poor compared to other potential opponents. Such as Kota Ibushi. Interesting, but I'd rather this idea stay in the heads of those involved. This will probably crop up on Killing The Town if it hasn't already done so.

And they say kayfabe is dead.

Some of the comments on different FB pages are fantastic. It's an obvious work between two friends, yet people are acting like Jericho killed Omega's puppy.

Are you saying Jericho isnt good enough for Omega or vice versa?

Jericho struggles to keep up in the WWE. NJPW has a more intense and faster-paced workstyle. Maybe I'm not giving them enough credit, though. They may not be able to work an Omega/Okada or Omega/Naito style match, but they are both extremely creative wrestlers who are willing to push the boundaries, so I'm sure they'd come up with something original. It would never be MOTN though.

Honestly I think a match with Jericho is something they'd need if they were serious about this western expansion. Of course I see it being a real thing like the WWE's UK show...

That said I think it's obvious to most that Jericho is a few steps behind most of the elite (!) workers today. Excellent character work, but work rate he just can't hang with them anymore.

I do think Jericho has slowed down quite a bit, but i believe they could pull this off. I was just trying to clarify what you meant

Depends on the booking/build.

If you book Jericho as Omega's equal, you're kidding yourself. But if you book Jericho as 'Old Man Chris' - the beaten up, broken down former hero with the match itself really being a beatdown from Omega with Jericho barely hanging in there with moments of some babyface fire. The story itself doesn't really depend on any great offence from Jericho, instead on Omega's (in)ability to put this old man away.

Frustration can first build in Omega, then eventually the match becomes much less a war of attrition for Omega and more a case of Jericho refusing to die. In the end it comes down to a HBK/Flair moment with Omega dealing the final V-Trigger to a bloody Jericho, after clearly saying a number of times, " Please Chris, stay down "

Kenny Omega has once again responded to Chris Jericho, this time bringing their Twitter feud to an end.

The pair has been trading shots at each other over the past week, which we have reported about, but Omega has now attempted to end the situation.

There has been speculation that New Japan Pro Wrestling has been in talks with Y2J about a potential WrestleKingdom match, but that still remains just a rumor.

I wanted the Wrestle Kingdom match to happen. :verysad:
