Seriously, Prisoners probably eat nicer food than this. Nothing says "Wholesome, delicious meal" than a bowl of slop thats had every ingredient boiled for hours until it's either mush or meaty chewing gum.

I'd rather put in some effort at home than some shitty 'meal' cooked in a Slow Cooker. Terrible invention.

Beef stew with biscuits is pretty damn good.

That's about as far as I'd take it though. If I'm making crock pot food I'm making something else most of the time.

Gumbo is fucking awesome. You can't judge every stew the same.

If you cook like shit, it will taste like shit. And most people put no effort into stews. Even searing the meat seems too much for people, or sauteing the mirepoix.  In the case of mush it is simply overcooked.

Stew is awesome if done well, brown the meat first and use the right cuts that break down over time.
Don't leave the vegetables in the whole time, add them later.

The crockpot is probably the greatest invention ever.

When my wife and I are working same hours, the crockpot goes on before work and dinner is ready when we get home. Ain’t nothing wrong with that especially when it tastes good.

Indeed.

They frown on not feeding your kids so as a single mom working full time, the Crock Pot was a god send.  Stew, roast, chowders, casseroles.  My life was forever changed when I got a programmable one.

We did have a Crock Pot 'incident' though.  I got the roast and all the fixings done up in the pot and put it in the fridge.  I told the girl when she got up to put it in the Crock and turn it on and when she got home from school to turn it off.  I came home and everything smelled great.  And then I looked in the sink and there was the empty pot.  She'd dumped everything out of the pot into the crock and yeah.  It cooked everything, but there was Au Jus everywhere so it was pretty dry.

Better than the time she put a styrofoam cup of Ramen in the microwave and it caught on fire a) because it's was styrpfoam b) she didn't put water in it.  :suspic:   I swear she's actually pretty smart most of the time.  

Zoinks McJinkies, go back to wherever you were hiding - this may be the worst take in the history of PW. I'm truly sorry that everyone in your love can't cook, but Stew done properly has such intense depth of flavour with different textures and layers - it's one of the best ways to eat. Braised meat is honestly as good as it gets for me - nothing beats a beef cheek that has been lovingly cared for for hours and hours and hours with huge amounts of attention to detail. If there's boiling going on in your stew - you're doing it wrong and I don't blame you for not liking it.

And Irish Stew done well is a thing of pure beauty - particularly in the depths of winter.
