What is the future of deep fakes? For those who don't know, deep fakes are essentially the ability to digitally replace a face with another. CGI Brad Pitt on your monster mug and go. It's gotten seamless enough that Hollywood can do it really well and on a consumer level it is only getting cheaper and better. Soon to be affordable to almost anyone who wants to do it. We have already seen some fun meme worthy videos where people have replaced actors in films and had faces metamorphosis on an interview chair.
Hollywood is the easy answer. Hollywood will extend the careers of actors. Make sequels with actors who have passed away.
A friend of mine now has an ex-husband that bartered candid nudes of her for deepfake porn of her friends. He had hidden cams in the house to take nudes of her without her knowing. Then would trade online for porn made with her friends faces on it. This could easily be repeated all over the place.
Soon people will be able to deepfake other identities into online communication as easy as an instagram filter. It will be harder to catch criminals online as they can elude identification with your face.
But will all this happen? When cell phones first came out with good cameras on them, there was a ton of concern over privacy as it would be easy to violate people's privacy. Sure, it happens. But not at a level proportionate to the number of pinhole cameras out there.
Some things seem to have a way of weeding themselves out for good or for evil. Which way will deepfakes go?
