I'm going to Brisbane very soon, (My tattoo sleeve is being entered into a coloured sleeve competition..and i'm getting another tattoo on the day)
recommendations as where to go and what to eat?
Don't drink alcohol nor coffee so not into bars/cafes unless they have a cool gimmick or an arcade.
Have you been to Brisbane, what did you think?

I’m sure it’s a nice place, I’ve been there once and didn’t find it all that exciting. I’m a southerner, so it’s hard to be excited when Melbourne is your capital.
There’s the river front, and of course the CBD. Don’t get too excited, it’s on par with Adelaide and Perth.

The greatest city in the world.
Just kidding, Brisbane is still a pretty low key city these days, especially now that a lot of local business' have been driven out of the CBD. The CBD itself has about five big shopping centres with the Myer Centre being the main hub. You'll find one of the arcades on the top floor next to the theatre while the other one is on Albert st. on the way to the Botanical Gardens. Last time I checked, the arcades hadn't been updated since I was a regular in 2008 but things could have changed in the past few years. They just opened up a big arcade at Garden City with bowling, go karts (or dodge ems? I only had a quick browse) etc. They had a couple new arcade machines as well, although I wasn't too impressed. There's also a more retro collection of arcades out at the South Bank imax which is in walking distance of the city if you want to pop your head in. As far as pop culture, there's a local DVD shop on the top floor of the Myer Centre that has collectables, the Mr Toys near the library in the CBD has been acting like Zing 20 years before that was even a thing and there's a comic book store right across the road from the Hilton called Daily Planet. It's been a few years since I've been there but staff are friendly enough and their stock is pretty good. There's another comic book store right up the road on the way to parliament. It looked like a ghost town the last time I checked it out, but it still appears to be selling stuff. There's also a record store near Adelaide st. next to an EB Games/Zing called Rocking Horse which is something of an institution. Otherwise it really is just your usual fair of Australian retail with plenty of JB Hi Fis, EB Games etc.
The Valley is like the Kings Cross of Brisbane. From the sounds of it, you might want to check out Netherworld which is a gamer theme bar that took over from the old one Yahtzee set up 10 years ago. They have board games, arcades, consoles etc. I've never actually been, but from what I've heard it's pretty easy going and they've got a decent variety.
I don't really indulge, so I can't really put them over but there's some pretty decent cafes and burger joints out near West End and New Farm. West End is past the Art Gallery in South Bank and is sort of the hippy capital of the CBD while New Farm is out past the Valley and is a little more high brow. I only go out there to check out movies at the Palace from time to time. So basically I'd recommend having a look online and seeing if there's anything that captures your interests.

Yeah, Brissie isn't really a place you want to visit, it's more about settling down which is why so many southerners make their way up here.
The touristy stuff is usually just outside the city, either an hour north or south depending on your tastes (sight-seeing or death rides).
System - Depending on whether sandylea is joining you, you should check out Mt Cootha. It's a lovely view and while the food is expensive, it's a nice place to have an ice cream and get a good glimpse of Brissie.

I know the area well, my mum owned the Chemmart on Elizabeth st. It used to be a tiny store on the corner, before she leased the spot where one of those big $1 stores were. I spent plenty of time at the fish and chip shop next door playing Metal Slugs 2.
But honestly there's not a lot out that way. There's an ice rink where Margot Robie went for skate lessons for I, Tonya but really that's about it. If you go a suburb over to Sunnybank there's a ton of Asian Cuisine around there and Eight Mile Plains.

Go to Boggo Road Gaol and get a look at where WWE legend Nathan Jones spent some of his formative years.

I have worked around the corner from this place many times, it is the ass-end of Brisbane. My comments on Brisbane, it is better than Adelaide... That's about all I got. Coffee is terrible. I like the Restaurant strip in Southbank, but never been hugely impressed with the food or service.

That’s a great idea @admin , thanks. I’ve done the Melbourne Gaol tour as well as the local old Maitland Gaol and they were great. sandylea also loves cemeteries, so if there’s any ... good cemeteries around let me know 🤨. I like the Restaurant strip in Southbank, but never been hugely impressed with the food or service. It's close, Inala has the worst reputation but there isn't a lot to do out near Acacia Ridge to be fair.
Brisbane isn't really known for it's cafes like Bondi or Melbourne, but did you check out West End? They've got a couple of cafes out that way that at the very least are better than what South Bank has to offer.
I'm more familiar with the one out near Holland Park, but I doubt you'll find yourself out that way. The closest one would be out near Toowong which is just a couple of suburbs out from the CBD on the way to Mt Cootha, so you can kill two birds with one stone. You're also near the Regatta which isn't a bad place to stop to have lunch and the big Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is close by if you want more options.

I really liked Brisbane when I was there. I was there for study so didn't do lots of touristy things but it felt very like a very liveable place and using the river taxi to get about was a fun novelty for me. I went to Dreamworld on the one day off I had because I wanted to go on a few roller coasters and while it was small, the rides were good. It certainly wasn't a hugely vibrant place like Sydney or Melbourne - but where is apart from Sydney and Melbourne? It certainly felt like a more interesting place than Newcastle or Canberra for example.

I was planning to murder you Wolf Creek style when you visited Newcastle PB but you didn’t want to hang out...could have been some excitement for you 😛😂. I’m off to Brisbane in 11 hours, hoping to squeeze in as much as possible while I’m there as I’ll be at Tattoo convention for the weekend. 1st day for entering sleeve and 2nd day for the Donkey Kong tattoo I mentioned in The Gamer’s Pub... Big Pete gets a free hat if it wins.

Just got back from South East Queensland tattoo & arts expo that my tattooist asked me to travel interstate to. ( John Sayas @ Sayas Ink) temporary photo sharingsandylea got this for free (the original canvas bailed with short notice) and she got runner up for grey wash small animal category. This tat won temporary photo sharing temporary photo sharingI enter my healed arm sleeve into the competition yesterday and got this tattoo of Dhalsim done today, neither won. There was some super cool tattoos people had, one guy had a super detailed “we are venom” chest tat and another guy had a full storm & shipwreck covering his entire front/back body. There was also a girl that had “make love to me gently with a chainsaw” tattooed above her crotch 😂😂 (My phone was dead so I couldn’t take pics) Otherwise really poorly run event, all the guests were super friendly but all the scheduling timing ran hours late and the walkways were super narrow with the entry set up..with people walking around with fresh tats. 🤦🏻♀️ Luckily people were super considerate and no one bumped anyone...that I saw anyway. ———— Loving Brisbane so far, so much cool stuff. DVDking has super rare movies especially horror and there’s heaps of Halloween decor out already which is odd as it’s not really celebrated here, i’d go full Zack Ryder in the toy world here.

When I found out it was being held at the Acacia Ridge Hotel, it didn't sound like it'd be the smoothest event ever. Sounds like they found the most affordable place to hold it and tried to make do.
From the sounds of it, you made the most of the CBD. I see you found the IMAX as well, I always make a point of going to South Bank to catch movies. Not only is it affordable but it's an easy destination for everyone to get to and considering what you pay for, it's hardly any different to going to an Event Cinema. It's actually a decent way to kill a lazy Sunday, gather a group together watch one movie, grab lunch and watch another movie straight after, grab an ice cream and just chill around the Brissie River.

Yeah it was pretty boring 😂. Couldn’t believe how cheap tickets and snacks were. Almost double at my local cinema...and that’s the cheapest in the area. Walked to Fortitude Valley to go to palace cinemas because my sister gave Sandra a gift card for Xmas...it didn’t work 🤦🏻♀️. (Mailing out a new one)

To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Palace. I've only ever been a handful of times over the years, but considering what you pay for I find the seating worse than Cineplex. It's like they swindle you with this sleek entrance, bar and foreign movies only to throw you into a small cramped theatre.
It's usually just a last resort if it's a limited screening or simply a change of scenary. Plenty of cafes, grills and bars around as well as Phase 4 Records on Ann st which maybe worth a look.

Flight was meant to leave at 2:50pm, gate changed without notice
Then delayed to 5:45pm then 6 then 6:30
Then delayed until 8pm..then cancelled.
No communication from Jetstar at all.
Now getting a 8:35pm Sydney flight then a bus to Newcastle.
/—-
2:09am and made it home. Serves me right for using cheap AF airlines.
I’m sure this sort of stuff is a regular occurrence for Incy and people that travel for work so cant complain too much.

Many many times, but I don't ever fly Jetstar unless I have to. I am an airline snob, I only fly Qantas domestic. International mostly Qantas, Cathay or Emirates. Fly a bit of AirNZ... Have to domestic in NZ
