I enjoyed the show tonight. I hope people get on board with this show. Because this show is way better, than when TNA tried to go head-to-head with RAW.

The women’s title is hilariously small. They probably shrunk it so it could fit on Riho.

Hell yeah Riho! That and seeing Mox and Pac was the highlight for me, I am satisfied.
One week of dueling shows and hearing people behave like good boys for their favorite carny overlord was all I needed to know going back to weekly wrestling watching and reading was a bad move.
lmao at Swagger.

I thought it was a good first show. You could tell the PPVs helped iron out some of the kinks and gave them some direction as far as booking concerned.
Cody & Sammy Guevara was a smart choice as opener. Of all the guys in AEW, Cody has consistently been considered the highlight and since he's already locked into a program with Jericho, his first match didn't have to be marquee. Meanwhile Guevara is still a rookie in this industry and while he's looked promising he needed a high profile match to generate some interest. So they were able to kill two birds with one stone, Cody got to be in the first Dynamite match in AEW history, got the win but Guevara came out of the match a bigger star. Or at least he established himself as one of the biggest tools on the roster. I thought the post-match beat down with Jericho was a bit much. I thought AEW would be more concious and would have the Elite or MJF or somebody run out to protect Jericho but instead you get this 5 or so minute segment where Jericho pounds away on Cody and has all the time in the world to set up that powerbomb on two steel chairs spot.
For awhile I thought Brandon Cutler was Ashley Sixx from the 2015 ROH Top Prospect Tournament (the same one that produced Beer City Bruiser, Dalton Castle and Dominik Dojavik) but it turns out I'mcompletely misremembering. I just remember both being bald and looking sickly. Anyway, I think this was easily the lowlight of the night. Cutler completely blew the finish so they improvised and they gave us this flat finish with Cutler stammering over, MJF cold cocking him and putting on the salt of the earth (reverse armbar) for the win. Ultimately it doesn't matter if MJF had a ***** match or not, but Cutler came out of this looking horrible.
Then they gave us some variety. They did the celebrity spot with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. Smith is one of the most polarising figures in Hollywood, I happen to love him and since he's so into pop culture it didn't feel as awkward as celebrity appearances tend to. It also gave them an opportunity to promote the tag team tournament for next week by having a bunch of teams who aren't facing each other (or aren't even involved in the tournament) get into a confrontation. It was fine and I think that's going to be the biggest challenge finding that balance between establishing characters and delivering in-ring action.
Next up was PAC vs. Page. This was supposed to happen at Double Or Nothing, but the story going around was that PAC was asked to job and as the Dragon Gate champion he said no. I tell you what, it would have been a much better way of establishing Page as a title contender than having him win that battle royal. Anyway, I thought this was a good match. They had a good strike exchange early on, PAC worked on top but the few moments Page was on offence his stuff looked really good. PAC won with his Red Arrow (Corkscrew Shooting Star Press) and Brutalizer (Rings of Saturn) combo, so clearly AEW have big plans for him. Which is good because he's one of the best performers in the world and it would have been so petty to have him lose because he had obligations to another promotion. Right away, AEW are winning me over by actuallydoing what's best for business. I do feel a bit sorry for Page because he was this guy AEW insisted on, but if they can take him back a level and establish him against guys like Guevara and MJF I think he could win the fans over.
Then it was the AEW Women's Championship match between Nyla Rose & Riho. I thought this was pretty solid, they addressed the size difference fairly early on but did a good job of making it an even contest by having Riho constantly take the fight to Nyla. Sometimes they run into the mistake where they have the monster dominate 99% of the match, only for their to be a small package and it really doesn't do anything other than make the monster look vulnerable. Here it wasn't an issue and Riho's ring savvy eventually paid off as she was fairly comprehensively in the end. Top turnbuckle Northern Lights Suplex followed by two running knees good stuff. After the match, they had Nyla attack both Nakazawa and Riho and I thought they would have a female come out and break up the fight instead they had Kenny come out there. It's no secret that this is Kenny's division and I hope this is setting up for more mixed tags or something, otherwise he just took a spot from somebody else.
And finally there was The Elite vs. Jericho & LAX. I was actually relieved when they worked this more like an angle with Moxley taking Omega aside and Jericho unveiling his own stable to seemingly combat the Elite. I'm sure a Jericho/LAX vs. Omega/Bucks match would have been perfectly fine but there is always that challenge of leaving the fans wanting more, so I thought they did this well. The big Attitude Era style all-in was fun, so much so, the fans popped huge for Jack Hager which is something I didn't think I'd see in 2019. Who knows how long he'll stay relevant for, in every other promotion outside of the WWE he's struggled but who knows maybe AEW will figure out the right formula.
So all in all, I thought the show gave us four segments that delivered and the one segment that fell flat wasn't that important and if anything MJF can always channel it into heat. One of the big concerns I had going into the show was commentary, but the inclusion of Schiavone helped and helped feel like the missing link between AEW and WCW. Now if only they can bring in Hudson, The Professor and Madden (okay maybe not Madden) then we'll be in business.
I'm curious to see how they'll go in the second week. The premier was always going to be a big deal and it was easy to just put together a strong card, now they've got to start building some angles and keep the fans hooked.

That match sucked from what I’ve seen (didn’t watch the whole thing, I’m watching clips while streaming NXT and the Leafs game). The main complaint all summer has been about Cody and the Bucks blowing themselves. They know they’re going up against Papa Haitch and NXT and that’s the match they decide to go with. Not a great start imo. Please tell me you aren't referring to the cody/sammy match. You should consider watching the match before criticizing it. I feel like aew wrestling isn't the style of wrestling for you if you're looking for clips and moments to watch as highlights, wrestling works better if you allow yourself to view he story being told in the ring from start to finish.

Fairly sure PAC issue was visa related. A bunch of people were having visa issues around that time.
Super psyched to see Swagger back. Him and Page I think can tear down the house. He has been around enough that he may just be able to be himself and do that as a character.
Awesome to see Riho take the title. She is so amazing.

Saying it sucked was harsh and probably because I was comparing it to Riddle/Cole, which might have been my new MOTY. I did watch the entire match and it was fine. I still take issue with the decision to put Cody on first when you know that everyone watching is going to compare the kick off match to NXT. Overall the show was good and I’m still a fan and still on board with what they do to build stories and angles. I love that we have even more awesome wrestling to follow along with. Looking at the stable that formed at the end of the show has me happy. Groups and stables are important and a lot of fun when done right. And I have faith in AEW to do it right. Jericho Hager Guevara Ortiz Santana The veteran leader and World Champ, the muscle, the bright future star, the solid tag team. Perfect.

I didn't see your post prior, but as I said I thought it was a smart decision. It meant something that Cody worked the first ever match on Dynamite and I thought it was the type of match that the show could build on. I've yet to actually watch the NXT show, but putting your World Championship match as an opener is setting an extremely high bar and while I'm sure NXT did a decent enough job of following it, it can feel like a slog when a show starts so high and doesn't give the audience an opportunity to switch gears.
It would not shock me at all if Cody/Guevara drew a higher rating than Cole/Riddle.

This stable is just way too random for me. I didn't like it.
Plus, the Ciampa return > Hager debut. So I'm giving them an L for this one.

I've not seen Cody vs Guevara but I'm going to guess that it's a more grounded, old school match, in stark contrast to Riddle vs Cole which is no doubt the super excessive NXT finisher spamming bomb fest which has been their MO for the past year. Probably wasn't a deliberate choice on AEW's part, but if I was in North America choosing between the predictably excessive Riddle vs Cole, and the fresh matchup on the fresh wrestling show Cody vs Guevara, I am definitely choosing the latter. But that speaks to my wrestling tastes more than anything else, I guess.
