For dweebs like myself who are interested in this stuff. Predictably, AEW hammers NXT in the first week. AEW - 1.409m NXT - 0.891m I am surprised NXT had such a large audience. For sure I thought NXT fans would be tuning into the first night of AEW. What's your spin? I see it as a great night for both sides. For context are you able to show the raw pr smackdown ratings. I have no idea if these numbers are high or low. I read that aew did good 18-49 demographic numbers.

2.57m for RAW this week which was a much higher than usual number. 2.099m for SmackDown.
Interesting that more people watched wrestling on Wednesday than Tuesday and also incredibly AEW had a higher rating than SmackDown in the 18-49 demo despite splitting that demo with NXT.

I'll be curious to see the numbers for next week, and see whether those who watched on opening night stuck around for the follow-up.

I think for a casual fan, or even someone stumbling on 2 wrestling shows on the same night, they will pick AEW over NXT, atleast initially. The live crowd size, the production value. For a casual observer, it’s a “ WWE “ like show. NXT in Full Sail looks like its shot in a basement.
But the additions of Bálor and Ciampa will ensure an interest, NXT has a fonz factor and a crazy amount talent on hand. I find AEW is a ‘revenge of the nerds’ type show, most of who need a few good years in WWE’s developmental to consider themselves on par with the talent at WWE’s disposal.

Think it's been known for a good number of years that WWE's demo is aging and they really aren't bringing in anyone new, which is obvious by the ratings constantly hitting new lows and attendance only remaining constant due to increasing prices.

I'm not surprised that AEW beat NXT because it's new, it's interesting, the marketing and buzz has been amazing, and I think a lot of people expected some huge surprises given it was their first show.
You look at what NXT was putting out there in their previews and advertising and you probably say "eh, I can watch that any time."
Premieres of new shows always have far higher ratings than anticipated then they drop off when viewers decide if they're going to keep watching or not. I'm more curious to see what the ratings are a month or two from now.
EDIT: Also does NXT air live on the Network in the US? Or do you have to watch it on USA to see it live?

The demos of the audience are so distinct, it means you had a TON of people watching vs. shared audiences flipping back and forth.
If I'm WWE, I don't panic one bit, though. WWE knows how to make it seemingly forever. It's on AEW to show they're a long-term competitor.

Considerable drop off for AEW and really NXT as well, half to be expected I guess. It will be interesting to see how this lands in the coming weeks once the new car smell has worn off.
I have to say, and I'll talk more about this in the party threads - I really don't see how NXT stands a chance here. It's barely promoted and shot in a bingo hall, plus you're dealing with the perception from new fans which is 'so these guys aren't good enough to be on Raw or SmackDown?' I don't know how you break that. You could try touring the show but I doubt very much it sells out your average arena.
Then again, NXT may only exist on TV to steal whatever viewership and therefore momentum AEW gathers.

I was hoping Todd, that NXT on USA would be presented much more like a Takeover event, at least visually. I’ve always found the yellow / black a dull. Meanwhile the black / white static aesthetic, feels a lot ‘cooler ‘ for lack of a better word. Here’s a thought, would it hurt to drop the live element and tape on Mondays, before RAW? Bigger crowd, albeit a casual base not the core NXT audience. Or drop the big set piece all together in favour of a smaller WECW type set and cram more people in Full Sail and under produce it and call it ‘ edgy ‘ NXT just doesn’t feel like it’s found it’s groove yet. Out of the gate UE v Imperium would have set a drastically different tone. Johnny NXT has done nothing.. maybe turn Balor heel as part of UE and feud with DIY??? Or fuck it, send The (middle age) Club down to NXT with Balor feud with UE?

Ratings are starting to settle into normal expectations now after an unexpectedly big start. AEW is still holding above 1m for the moment which is good. I do wonder how big an audience they can ever get with such a wrestling heavy show. I'm torn because while I love it, I want them to get as big an audience as possible and I don't know if they can do it with this kind of setup.
NXT has dropped from 2nd to 4th to 10th to 27th to 30th in the key 18-49 demographic. Five weeks in is early and I know that its only real purpose is to take viewership from AEW but I wonder if Vince is embarrassed by it. 30th in the key demo for a live wrestling show, yikes.

Maybe HHH will be out as head of NXT finally? Assign Bischoff to spearhead NXT's resurgence. Unless Bruce's heart can handle it.

Nothing you say is wrong im sure. But when I watch tv or ppvs there are seemingly mostly people 18-49 in the audience. And we hear of the company selling merchandise, I find it hard to believe children or senior citizens are doing that much purchasing.

In the dvr age rating don't mean what they use to. Its all about +3 and +7. Almost everything I watch regularly is on dvr.

I went to Super-Showdown in Melbourne last year it was pretty much all families, same with the house show before that...families buying Cena match everywhere.

Never mind the fact that Dynamite once again beat NXT in the ratings this week, but they also just beat this week's SmackDown in the ratings.
AEW had 963,000 for their show, while SmackDown had only 888,000 watching.

It's still a bloodbath in the demo though. It's got to be alarming for NXT that they can dump these big stars on the show and pull a 0.3 in the key demo. Tony Khan has to be happy with this war so far.

There is no war apart from the one AEW think they're in. WWE is playing across three brands on three different days, not including the UK brand/205/Main Event. And internationally has far more scope than AEW could dream of.
AEW's pro-war rhetoric is fantastic however in convincing it's base audience AEW is competing with WWE. It is competing, but with the 3rd tier, out of WWE's possible 6 weekly products.

NXT are behaving far more like it's a war than AEW are. Spamming gimmicks and sending major stars to the show. I don't see AEW is trying to pop ratings at all really.
I have no dog in this race but of course it's a war. WWE put this show on Wednesday nights to take AEW out. That's competitive warfare. It's fun.

AEW may now be in some trouble. Yes, they won in the key demographic for the 9th week in a row. But this week, not only did they lose in total ratings, but they lost pretty handedly.
NXT - 810,000 AEW - 663,000

This is fucking hilarious:
If you can’t tell they’re joking about NXT winning all demos in ratings this week. Dain mentions Alvarez and the video goes from there.

DEAD HEAT this week. AEW and NXT each pulled in over 778,000 viewers.
UPDATE: In the key 18-34 demographic, AEW edged out NXT. (0.28 for AEW, 0.24 for NXT)

ratings are fun stuff and all. But legit the only number I"m interested in is the bare minimum AEW needs to draw to stay on the air. Did they continue to hit the bare minimum? Boom, great.
