Today I learned that BERM is a word.
A berm is a level space, shelf, or raised barrier (usually made of compacted soil) separating two areas. It can serve as a fortification line, a border/separation barrier, in industrial settings, or in many other applications. A berm is also used on mountain bike and BMX courses to assist the rider around a corner at speed; this type of berm is often steep and curved, unlike most "construction berms". The word berm originates in the Middle Dutch and came into usage in English via French.
Did you learn anything new today?

Wife and I take online Harvard Medical School classes (HMX or something like that?) because... We're nerds? The class we're in now is Pharmacology. And today's module was about toxicity. So learned all about that this evening. And opioids. I learned about berms back in 2009 when I started in safety in the coal mines. Such a funny little word for dirt mounds.

Today I learned about a brilliant woman called Grace Hopper.
You will find surprisingly little about her on the internet, which is a great shame. As well as having a doctorate in Mathematics at a time when women earning doctorates was extremely rare, and serving in the US Navy, she pioneered several revolutionary concepts in computer science which are still used to this day. Most notably, she invented the concept of programming languages using English words, making life much easier for the programmer compared to inputting meaningless instructions. She also developed the first compiler, a program that translates "anglicised" computer programs into code a computer can understand.
A truly remarkable woman.

I learned that the Nazis used meth when they invaded France, Belgium and the Netherlands because it meant their soldiers could fight for three days straight and execute the blitzkrieg offensive.

Did you learn anything new today? I was on the board of directors for a local skatepark. We had a couple people obsessed with having berms around it for the visual. Not for the skaters. Just the aesthetics. Landscaper brains.

They're evolving. It's like one of those life insurance commercials that tries to act like people are having real conversations.

Today I learned the IWGP Championship as we know it today didn't come into being until 1987. Because of my trusty PWI Almanac, for 25 years I thought the title's lineage began in 1983 when Hogan defeated Inoki in the finals of a tournament to crown an inaugural champion. Turns out that version of the "IWGP Championship" was more like the new Japan version of winning King of the Ring in that it was awarded to the winner of a yearly tournament and only "defended" at the next year's tournament. The more you know....

Also apparently it just needed a new battery. I took the battery out originally and it still beeped so I thought there was something wrong. Submitted a work order on Friday and obviously they hadn't come yet so I bought a pack of batteries and it's been... soothingly silent. Guess if they ever come to investigate I have to go FALSE ALARM LOL on them.

Love the pro wrestling spin on this thread! Then you're in luck. I have a few more pro wrestling related entries. Then I'll get back to stuff like last month's "Today I learned the states most comparable to England in size are Louisiana & Alabama. I always thought it was Oregon." Anyway.... For two decades I mistakenly believed WWF poached Butch Reed directly from Mid South Wrestling. Wrong! Reed left Mid South on New Year's Day 1986. He then spent about 7 months working for Central States Wrestling until WWF brought him and Slick in as a package deal. I also learned Slick is the son of veteran wrestler Rufus R. Jones. AND discovered I was in attendance for Hacksaw Jim Duggan's WWF debut on Valentine's Day 1987.

Shark Tank originated in Japan as The Tigers of Money and the UK version called Dragon’s Den is pretty good.

People who fast train to fast. There is practice involved in fasting. I guess I never thought of it. I just figured people got socially aware and kind of crazy and starved themselves. The more I think of it, the more bizarre fasting as protest is.

There’s actually a reason why certain people refer to lunch as dinner when having a meal in the middle of the day as Dinner refers to the largest meal of the day not the time.
