Given that this is a moving experience for a lot of us, having been in one place for so long, let's talk about other moving. The more taxing variety with trucks and trailers, lifting bookcases and all the rest of it.
What are some things you've lost in a move? What are some of your horror stories? Has anyone anywhere in the world had a completely smooth move? How many times do you think you'll move in your lifetime? I've moved 3, see at least one more but then I want to be done.

Moving house is the pain in the ass everyone says, so I'm lucky to have only ever had to do it once. We got screwed over because the people who were booked in with the removalists before us had more stuff than could fit in the truck at once so we had to wait about four hours not being able to do much because everything was packed up. It'll be even worse next time I have to do it because I own so much more furniture now, so not planning on leaving my current place for a while!

I just moved two weeks ago. I hate it. Advice for anyone in the states who are moving and speak spanish, hire two mexicans for the day. We used two college kids one day and two mexicans the next. The Mexicans did more work than the college kids for 1/4th of the cost and did it better. We ended up paying them double what they wanted, which came out to like 60 for three hours of work each. For what they did I thought it was a fair price as they worked their asses off. For a final note on the cultures, one of the mexicans we had to insist take 60 instead of 30, as he tried to give the rest back.
As for moving I moved 8 times so far, and still am hoping to recover and head to ULV in a year or two.

Funny you should make this thread Oncall, as I'm actually moving this weekend.
I don't mind moving myself, as I don't own a whole lot of stuff, could probably fit everything I have in the back of a U-Haul truck, and still have plenty of space left over, as I can get everything moved in one trip.

I grew up in the military so we moved a handful of times. Looking back we didn't move that often as my Dad did 27 years and only lived on 5 bases. I plan to move in 4-5 years but it'll just be me so I don't see it being too bad since I am kind of a minimalist. Can't imagine moving a family every few years if you rent. Sounds exhausting.

I moved once, when I was 14, during summer break. The new house was a 10 minute drive from the old. The really weird thing is that I have zero recollection of the moving phase. It's a gaping gap in my memories. I have no idea why that is. Perhaps something terribly traumatic happened (even if it was just the move) and my brain discarded it. Who knows. I plan to move out in the near future, just a matter of when I get a job. I won't be looking forward to that, but it's a necessary step.

I moved into the house I'm living in now about early August. It's a nice house and I'm really glad we've moved now that everything is settled, but man those couple of weeks of moving everything and cleaning and getting everything settled was such a nightmare.
Having to move really sucks, but at least it can be worth it in the end.

I bought this house back in 2013 and when I moved I must have left a box or two of VHS tapes in the attic of the house I was renting, it took me a couple of years to realize some of the tapes that I'm missing. I was seriously tempted to go back and ask if the new owners of that house have those tapes, maybe they are still sitting up in that attic. Some of those tapes had some sentimental value, like my Roy Jones Jr. Greatest Hits tape.
We moved a lot when I was a kid though, basically every 3-6 months we would pack it up and move, sometimes I'd come home from school and there would be a uhaul truck in the front yard being loaded up by my parents just out of nowhere, they'd be trying to get out of town because they hustled some crack dealer or some shit. It was ridiculous.

My family and I used to move houses quite a bit when I was young, but it was always somewhere close-by, a thirty minute drive max. And we had a car, so it wasn't that terrible since I still went to the same school, my parents didn't switch jobs, etc.
I was moving crazily for work for a year or two, but it was always just for a few months so I didn't really invest in stuff and I could just pick 'em up all in one go. But when I moved to a city and worked there for two years, it was so crazy trying to haul everything back to another city when I resigned. And earlier this year, I dropped everything and brought 30+ kg of stuff to come to New Zealand. Thank goodness I had my sister support me and she was the one who packed the rest of my stuff at hers and shipped it back to my dad's house.
Moving is just so tedious and tiring, especially for someone like me who kinda hoards stuff and doesn't like throwing things away. I guess I've helped remedy that by just not buying much stuff at all. I can imagine how I'll feel when I leave this country in a year or two.

A thread like this is funny because my family is in the process of moving. My family has moved a lot over the years which usually have been in the same town sans living in South Carolina for a period. That's the life of people who rent in a town such as this. I like the idea of renting simply because I have no interest in being tied down to one location. Thankfully I haven't lost anything over the years, but I'm probably jinxing myself by saying that. The last move was pretty smooth besides the reasoning for the move.

I've moved four times, most recently in May. A friend of mine owns a moving company, so he's always helped me out on the side. Never any issues.

Lost all my oldest daughter's physical baby pics. From 11 years ago so I didn't have a digital camera or cellphone.
I have a handful of pics saved to my Facebook but man....lost 3 albums full in the move broke my heart.
