Sorry Emperor it's not that kind thread. Or maybe it is?
So I was in the toy aisle today browsing board games and I saw Mario Chess. Basically just Amiibos and a board. Some of the piece selections puzzled me though. Luigi was the queen whereas Peach had to share a bishop spot with Daisy. Guess they wanted pieces to be easier to memorize the spots. For some reason Toads were the rooks instead of the obvious choice as pawns. The Bowser team had a similar weird choice. Instead of making Goombas the pawns they were also the rooks with Koopa Shells as pawns. Think it would make a lot of sense the other way around. Shells obvious would fly across the board in a straight line way better than a Goomba, where 1-space movement seems ideal.
So if you were to make a chess board using a video game franchise what would your pieces be?

Sorry Emperor it's not that kind thread. I stopped reading here. But my eyes are too fast for my brain and I couldn't help but see the next few words, after which my heart was filled with hope. Alas, the disappointment became even stronger when I realised you weren't discussing the intricacies of the Sicilian Defense, or how controversial Magnus Carlsen's latest tweet is. To be sincere, I really like this thread concept. Custom chess sets are amazing things, but I'm not quite sure yet which video game I would choose for my dream chess set. I'll be back.

Definitely a Starcraft based chess set. Just not sure how to work in three races. Maybe you get two sets of each with the game board so it can be just like the game: Terran vs. Terran, Terran vs. Zerg, Terran vs. Protoss, Protoss vs. Zerg, Zerg vs. Zerg, Protoss vs. Protoss...
I'll do Terran first: - Pawns are marines - Rooks are siege tanks - Knights are goliaths - Bishops are vultures - Queen is a ghost - King is maybe a battle cruiser?
And now Zerg: - Pawns are zerglings - Rooks are lurkers - Knights are hydralisks - Bishops are defilers - Queen is Kerrigan as Queen of Blades, duh - King is ultralisk
And Protos: - Pawns are zealots - Rooks are reavers - Knights are dragoons - Bishops are high templar - Queen is a dark templar - King is an archon

The answer has to be Final Fantasy. But what would the pieces be? I have no idea. The easiest option is to go for a generic arrangement, using the class models from Final Fantasy I.
Pawn - Moogle Knight - Chocobo Bishop - Black Mage (black squares) and White Mage (white squares) Rook - Warrior
Can't think of a good generic representation of a King and Queen, so maybe I can substitute in specific characters. Cloud and Tifa/Aeris. Squall and Rinoa. Zidane and Dagger. Tidus and Yuna. You get the point.
