How about we combine all the shows and go with best free TV matches? I like this idea. My two favorite choices right now are Best On Interviews and Best Free TV Matches. We can work out the ballot size once we've decided on something. I don't know if the fact that we currently have an active thread with promos makes Best On Interviews feel redundant/overkill or relevant/perfect-timing. Regardless, I'm casting my vote for Free TV Matches.

I also like the promo idea. Plus I won't have to do as much research to refresh my memory, but either category would be fine.

Regardless, I'm casting my vote for Free TV Matches. The promo thread is what gave me the idea for Best On Interviews. Plus I feel like I need to make up for sitting out the Best Individual Promo countdown back in the day. I'm voting for promos because of the above and also because I think it will be easier. I'm not sure about the order but I already have a pretty good idea of who would be making that list. There are so many good free TV matches from WWE alone. Then you throw in all those other promotions and the pool is just too vast. I wouldn't even know where to begin. So right now we're tied up at 2-2.

Change my vote to best on interviews so we don’t have a tie.

So my brother and I have been discussing our favorite wrestling themes via text ever since I reminded him of the epic opera theme Mr. Wonderful came out to in 1995 WCW a few days ago. Now I want to bring that discussion to PW. It's been a few months since our last countdown. Now I know we did this one a few years ago but that was only a 10 entry ballot. This time it will be expanded to 25 if there are enough people willing to participate.
Let me know if you're interested. If there's enough interest we'll go forward with it.

I think it may have been the last countdown on the old board which still doesn't seem that long ago. Nevertheless I'll be in for this one too.

I'll participate in any countdown that Baker runs, regardless of topic.

Can we not be complete nerds about it? Like tiny intricate notes or whatever not being a complete different thing?
I remember something like that on the old board and it got annoying.
I'd totally send a list in then.

I'd totally send a list in then. Sure. I'm not THAT anal. Actually, I totally am  Just not about wrestling themes. We'll do this then. Send me lists of your favorite 25 wrestling themes. "Real" songs count. Like ECW and the Indies using popular music, for example. Not setting a deadline yet. So no rush to get lists in.

TIL Hulk Hogan had a WWF theme other than Eye of the Tiger and Real American. Mind blown! It was called "Ravishing." Props to Shootist for this discovery.

Ahhh the Hulk Hogan cartoon theme!
I remember catching that show on syndicated in the early 00s and enjoying it way more than I should have. The theme was awesome, it was no Eye of the Tiger or Real American, but it was certainly better than American Made.

Once Hogan got "Real American" from the US Express Jim Steinman (of Meatloaf fame) who wrote the song reused it for Bonnie Tyler's album Secret Dreams And Forbidden Fire where it got the title "Ravishing." I remember seeing Hogan use it a few times for Maple Leaf Gardens shows then it popped up on the cartoon around the same time.

shinobimusashi suggested a series of 1998 related countdowns in the Match Review Thread- Favorite Wrestler of 1998, Best Match of 1998, and Best Show of 1998. I'm in. Anybody else? If this catches on I would be up for doing other years as well.

Yeah I'm thinking we should do this, a multi-top 10 for 98, best match, favorite wrestler, best show. Any other categories we should do? Best tag team? Feud? Least favorite wrestler?

I like the idea of a multi-tier countdown to celebrate the greatness of 1998. I'd be down! I'd need some more knowledgeable WCW and ECW fans to point me towards some stuff from those promotions to research to help save my lists from being strictly WWF Elitist.

Benoit vs. Raven- Souled Out Goldberg vs. DDP- Halloween Havoc Not sure about worthy WCW shows. ECW MatchesTanaka vs. Awesome- Heatwave Sandman vs. Sabu- House Party RVD vs. Bigelow- TV Title Change Taz vs. Bigelow- Living Dangerously & Heatwave Dudleys vs. Babyfaces- Heatwave (for a fun main event spectacle that captures the ECW spirit) There are plenty of other good ones but I rate these as the cream of the crop from 1998 ECW. ECW Shows- Heatwave. All the other 1998 ECW pay per views suck, though I'm sure they had a good ECW Arena/Elks Lodge show or two.

I'd check out Saturn vs Raven from Fall Brawl 98, fucking LOVED that match. Also Goldberg vs Sting from Nitro in August I believe, highly underrated match. Also Bret vs Flair from Souled Out is pretty good too if I remember correctly.
Souled Out might be best WCW PPV of the year but I've always really had a thing for Superbrawl, STACKED fucking card with an excellent snap shot of the company in it's prime, Booker T in back to back TV title defense vs Saturn and Martel was good, Jericho vs Juvy mask vs title vintage heel Jericho and damn good match, EPIC Goldberg squash one of my favorites, Bulldog vs Mongo not that great but I'm huge Bulldog mark so having him on the card just puts it over even more, DDP vs Benoit for US title if I remember correctly is an excellent match, Luger vs Savage, Scott turning on Rick Stiener becoming Big Poppa Pump, and Sting vs Hogan II in the main. I have a major affinity for this PPV.
ECW underrated matches from that year would be Justin Credible vs The Great Sasuke from House Party 98. House Party is probably the second best show of that year for me, solid RVD vs Bam Bam match with some fun Heyman booking going on, Taz at perhaps his peak of badassery vs 2 Cold Scorpio in Scorpio's ECW return, Sabu vs Sandman in one of the most ECW matches ever. Fun undercard also with Jerry Lynn vs Candido, Gran Naniwa vs Hamada, peak Al Snow/Head and prime Dudley Boys(vs New Jack, Kronus, and Spike).
Also 2 of the best ECW matches of the year on the May 16th ECW Arena show(A Matter Of Respect II) Justin Credible vs Jerry Lynn 2 out of 3 Falls, easily one of the best ECW matches of the year. From that same show the mixed partner tag match, RVD & Lance Storm vs Candido & Sabu is one of the best ECW matches you probably will ever see. Damn I want to watch some 1998 ECW now.

With the 1999 Countdown wrapping up today I'm going to be taking a little break from the countdown game.
There is a chance that a certain PW legend will be picking up my countdown torch in the near future.
If not, I'm sure I'll come back to this a few months from now. I already have a 2000 Countdown planned for early 2020 to continue this whole 20th Anniversary theme we've been doing.

Do we stick to calender years, or do we do something different like Wrestlemania to get into the spirit?

What do y'all think of doing a series of PW Top Ten Countdowns , in the same style of the project going on in Entertainment for Movies right now? Yay or nay? I'm just looking for some feedback on it.
