Okay so I just saw this message posted by the NYPD and I think it’s very important; so important that I want to relay this message to others. This is to avoid being scammed!
“Never Abbreviate 2020 when signing documents! For example 1/5/20 could be altered to 1/5/2018. Abbreviating the year can lead to fraud, prevent yourself from becoming a Victim.”
You’re welcome and stay safe!

Nothing. It is a lame panic based on a the presumption that the date can somehow be exploited.

What exact fraud am I worried about someone doing with a cashed check? I don't think the date will really matter. Using a check (that contains your routing/bank #) is probably bad enough if someone wanted to do anything...

For our agency, we have to sign client’s documents in full dates as such in case they steal a copy and reuse for the future instances

The only thing I can think of is rent paying and even then that's probably only if you pay a solo homeowner directly. I dunno if boomers still do it for groceries but I do selfcheck out so I don't encounter the old fucks doing it.

My 32-year-old wife LOVES writing checks. I don't get it. When paying our babysitter, my wife insists on writing a check. When I handle payment, it's a quick, automatic Venmo.

I think we have a thread talking about how weird it is that Americans still use cheques every 2-3 years here. Like, unless you're over 85, you don't use cheques in other parts of the world anymore.

When I paid rent at my last apartment, my landlord INSISTED on us paying in checks. I think it’s more of a paper trail thing.

Electronic transactions have a more specific paper trail than checks. Your landlord didn't want to pay fees for processing cards.

Those fees can be really steep for small business owners. There are no fees for Electronic transfers. Direct debit makes much more sense for a property owner as they can be set up to be automatic meaning the owner doesn't have to chase rent, unless the real reason is they're cashing the cheques for cash and not declaring the income.

“Never Abbreviate 2020 when signing documents! For example 1/5/20 could be altered to 1/5/2018. Abbreviating the year can lead to fraud, prevent yourself from becoming a Victim.” My mom just frantically texted me this very message the other day. OK, so I don't KNOW she was frantic. But I'll bet she was. There was urgency in that text. Anyway, can I use my new mod powers to change Kid's name to TheMom? Who is still using cheques anyway? How else would one pay bills? They still have check signing stands in the grocery stores. Many grocery stores have done away with this....at least in my neck of the woods. Even I have never written a check to buy groceries, by the way. My 32-year-old wife LOVES writing checks. I don't get it. When paying our babysitter, my wife insists on writing a check. When I handle payment, it's a quick, automatic Venmo. What is this Venmo you speak of? I am intrigued....

Venmo is the best thing ever.
You can send money to people and receive money to people and transfer it to your bank. It beats ‘IOU’ friends.

How else would you pay bills? WTF. I figured most people either do online bill pay via their bank (which I guess they write the check?) or do so directly with their utilities website. I pay my rent, elec and internet with my credit card. Whatever points I earn for the month more or less covers the fee that my apartment building charges for doing credit, which I'd gladly pay anyway because fuck storing my checking account on a server.
I've literally never owned a checkbook.

I used to pay my company sales tax on my credit card, which was awesome before they knocked it on the head.

My parents made it sound like a huge chore to pay bills when I was a kid, going to the post office etc. I’ve never paid a bill in person in my life so I wouldn’t know.

Do it that way with the goal of just paying it off in full when the paycheck comes to me. My debit card never gets used. I tend to only use cash for gas and going out to restaurants as I'm not about to let a server walk away with my card... get the fuck outta here.

We still have a few utilities that don’t allow for auto pay or online payment (water and sewer). We live in a very small town. We pay them with checks still. Also our tithe to the church is a check. Now that I think of it, we pay our son’s karate classes with a check also. Even most people in church here give by direct debit.

Even most people in church here give by direct debit. We are just a small country church of like 20 people, most of which are over 50. I don’t think anyone besides me and one other family would even know what I’d be talking about if I talked to them about electronic transactions. How I feel when I eat at Bob Evans.

Perhaps a better choice, but I've also never seen it only have 20 people inside...
