Came across this on PWO forums.prowrestlingonly.com/topic/50620-p2b-greatest-crockettwcw-matches/ The gist of it is some guys are running a ballot based thing to determine the Greatest Crockett/WCW Match(es). There's a link to the facebook group discussing this in the OP. While this will no doubt be a fun project, and I'm sure to follow along at home, I almost certainly won't be participating. You guys know my penchant for dropping projects halfway through. Plus I'm so flaky. Just one real life NWA/WCW example..... The first time I saw Magnum/Tully the only thing I really loved was the finish (keep in mind I was like 16). Then I thought it was a Top 15-20 match of all time for well over a decade. But the last time I watched it I wanted more than 15 minutes of punch/kick. And I can already see myself pulling my hair out over what Steiners vs. Fire & Ice match(es?) to choose. Anyway, whatchu got? What are your favorite NWA/WCW Matches? Maybe I'll post my list later.

Good job, guys. I haven't seen a bunch of the matches Shootist listed. Want to finish up my HoW Draft Card tonight. Then I'll look for my list(s). Think the last time I did this I did one for the 90s (Top 50?) and a lesser one for the 80s (Top 25?) as projects on a long-dead forum. I want to say this was right before Youtube blew up to make classic matches more accessible because I remember certain shows (Great American Bash 89 & 96, Clash of the Champions January 1992, and Spring Stampede '99) being over represented.

And of course sitting there at #50 is the ultimate Baker Holy Grail.

Jericho vs. Juvy is actually more of a Baker pick then you're giving it credit for, Jericho goes maximalist heel in that match, pulling out every trick that ever existed. It's very much something a Zbyszko fanatic would like, much different than a typical WCW Cruiserweight MOVEZ match.

I honestly don't remember much about that match in 2020 other than the finish where Jericho counters a Juvy frankensteiner into the Walls. That spot works for me approximately 100% of the time. Wasn't this also for The Juice's mask? Surprised there weren't a lot more cruiserweight matches on that list to be honest. I was still an actionfest enthusiast in 2007. BUT there are about 20 matches scrawled in the margins. At least half of them are cruiserweight matches. I'm almost positive I hadn't seen any of them and that was my "matches to check out" list. Will post my Top 31(!) 80s "NWA" match list later. About 5 minutes ago I flipped ahead a few pages and found an 80s & 90s combined Top 50- the true cream of the crop in Crockett/Turner history. Will post that one either tonight or tomorrow. *sigh* I have a feeling I'm going to talk myself into participating in their current project.

One of my favorite parts of that Macho Mark list Kilgore posted was seeing him give Steiners/Skyscrapers ****1/2. I also clearly recognize greatness by placing it at a very respectable #23. Another match I popped for seeing on my list was that oddball Mark Youngblood/Dick Slater selection. Also glad to see I didn't neglect Flair/J. Garvin and MX/Dudes. I'm pleasantly surprised 2007 me was able to distinguish between Flair/Lex and Midnight/Fantastic matches. That's honestly more than I was expecting. Too bad I cannot also say the same about the Flair/Windham series. Also props to 2007 me for having the balls to put the superior Flair/Funk match over the more famous one. I only wish I had bumped it up another spot to #2. Thunderdome Cage in the Top 10! Woo hoo! Flair/Sting is clearly the HBK/Bret, Rude/Steamboat "grudging respect" choice here. But I'm glad I stood firm on Flair/Race from Starrcade 83. Never got what was so great about that one other than perhaps historical significance. List definitely needed more Dusty. I still thought he sucked as an actual in ring wrestler. Same deal with the Road Warriors, only to a lesser extent. I wasn't a huge fan of the Rock and Roll Express unless they were opposite the Midnights either. And I thought Ole Anderson was the cure for insomnia. Speaking of the Roadies, huge lack of War Games 89 on the list. Also surprised I didn't include the Lex/Nikita and Lex/Dusty title changes. Still, I can't complain too much, as Flexy Lexy is heavily represented. 2007 me knew what was up. 9 "need to see" matches were written in the margins + the 2 previously mentioned "asterisks matches." *Overall Top 50 later

Surprised to see Rude/Steamboat on there. Guessing I gave it the ol' HBK/Bret Ironman "respect vote" since I felt obligated to include it. The Rude/Steamboat Iron Man is fantastic though. That third MX vs Fantastics match slipped through the cracks for me since it was on one of their weekly TV shows that I'm sure I missed. I also don't remember it being on the best of comps that I've come across. I will have to go on the Tube and seek it out sometime.

I'm already noticing that no one has brought it up in that PWO thread yet. You were the one who gave me the show and date. Until then I just always referred to it as "the long one." Though I could have easily discovered the date had I used my brain just a little bit. It is weird that this match rarely gets brought up when people discuss great tag matches. Shocked nobody from the PWO crowd mentioned it yet.

Not sure if its been mentioned but Rick Steiner beating Rotunda for the TV title at Starrcade. May not be as great of match as it was a great moment. The crowd pop is one of the best. I had it on my 80s list. Chances are the pop fooled me into thinking it was a better match than it was. Agree with you that it's a better moment than match. Was thinking about what "new" matches would be locks for those lists and realize there isn't much. I miss the days where I could watch match after match and show after show. I just don't have the patience anymore. Anyway.... Ric Flair vs. Ricky Morton- Great American Bash 7/5/86-I had almost certainly seen this before I made my last list because I remember the helicopter entrance. But chances are I wasn't into the actual match for dumb reasons like "I couldn't take Morton seriously as a World Title contender because he's a tag team wrestler." Now it would be a lock. Cactus Jack vs. Vader- Saturday Night 4/17/93 & 4/24/93-Surprised I didn't include these last time. I had seen them both and loved them even in real time when the phrase "good match" had yet to become a part of my vocabulary. Would have the first one quite high if I did it over again. However, their Halloween Havoc match would plummet. Hogan/Nash/Hall/Fake Sting vs. Flair/Arn/Lex/Sting- WAR GAMES- Fall Brawl 1996-I'd probably be the high vote on this one. Would almost certainly have it above War Games 91 at this stage in my fandom. Speaking of this stage in my fandom, this is the kind of wrestling I love in 2020. Strong faces vs. strong heels with stories and nuclear crowd heat. Hogan was awesome in this match! The Giant vs. Scott Norton- Fall Brawl 97-All action hossfest with The Giant looking like the future of wrestling. That kip up! A few other candidates while I'm here..... EDIT: "A few" turned into like 12 and I didn't feel like writing about every single match but now I really am thinking about participating. Even if I'm lazy and just end up filling out my list with random 1996 tv matches two days before the deadline it will be fun to contribute.

I will be keeping tabs on this. I decided to do some self-reflection and I figured out between all the DVDs I've only seen 65 matches. You could cut that number down to 23 since I never actually owned the Clash of Champions, WarGames and the second Eddie Guerrero set. Now the actual figure would be much higher between all the shows I watched back in the day and all the projects I've worked on, but those 23 matches have resonated with me a lot longer. It goes back to a larger point I wanted to make about these 'best of' lists and how the WWE influenced those discussion greatly in the 2000s with their compilations. I find it funny for instance how on a Steel Cage compilation you have Tully/Magnum on the same set as an Edge/Angle match from some random 2002 SmackDown.
Regardless Big Bubba vs. Mr. JL - WCW Saturday Night January 4th 1997 has got to be there.

Just did a search to see how viable this project will be. Typed in about 7 praised, but random matches from completely different eras. All were available on Dailymotion. Dailymotion is your friend and I now have no excuse not to participate. The plan now is to come up with a list of 250-300 matches-a mix of the PWO master list and a few fondly remembered matches of my own- And watch one a day until some time in December. Then finalize my ballot. Anybody else in? Big Pete don't know how I had never heard of that Bubba/JL "bicycle match" until you mentioned it a few years back. Classic Dusty!
