Come with me on a thought experiment. This is actually my latest pitch for a sci-fi TV series. Kind of along the lines of The 4400 in level of quality. Gosh I hope someone else watched that show.
Let's assume that the US is the first to develop and implement 6G or whatever the next level of high speed internet/data/cell phone towers there are. And they implement it in a mid size suburb in Jersey to test it out, maybe 3 different cities in the US. And, when they do it essentially illuminates the spirit realm and everything becomes visible. Full body apparitions are now fully visible and seen to the naked eye. You don't seem to be able to interact with them. They are just visible. There are the 3 different type of ghosts people talk about now: 1) residual- some ghost stuck in a loop repeating the same action over and over 2) Intelligent and 3) Benevolent or evil. As per the current mythology, some don't know they are dead. Ghost experts become sought after and highly important. Zach Baggins is suddenly super important. In later episodes they would find ways to communicate with them. Some would get a glimpse in the of being able to in the first episode.
People would have to decide if they wanted to live in the same place. Say, a residual ghost is now walking through your place over and over again. People would have to deal with seeing loved ones again but trapped in the spirit realm. Some fun places would just be log jammed with ghosts. The technology of rolling out 6G would be of very high government importance but now they would be forced to consider if they should continue to roll it out or if they should turn it off.
Just something I have been kicking around.
