I mean, considering Russia is/has been doing whatever the fuck they want in space... probably with some militaristic edge... I don't see a reason why the specific scope of of America's military shouldn't be expanded to definitely include space.

I assume making the Space Force its own separate branch from the Air Force is more of a strategic move in so far as funding is concerned? Otherwise, Space Force would end up like the poorly funded Marines under the Navy's umbrella?

Exactly.   If we're gonna explore space this is the way it should be done.   This way astronauts get their own separate funding rather than having to beg for scraps from the Air Force.
