Which Paper Mario games should I seek out? Better than Super Mario RPG? 64 and TTYD. Super Paper Mario is a good spin-off but it's a different style of game. They're expensive, so I would look into trying to emulate them before spending a 100 quid.
I would say 64 is slightly inferior to RPG, TTYD is on par if not superior. I would recommend playing both since the second builds on 64.

I want @ness to make every post with a Dumb and Dumber gif. Or if that's too restrictive, Jim Carrey gifs. And/or AOC gifs. Also, as just mentioned in the other thread... I've been toying with the idea of dusting off the ol' N64 again out of growing boredom with the games I've been playing on PS4. I have no interest in dropping money on anything for the PS4, yet I'll gladly spend money on N64 games. This whole paper cutout Mario concept is so intriguing to me for some reason. And also, I'm very curious to revisit Zelda to see if my stance on it had an utterly poor foundation. Also also also... I still can't get over how cool of a title "Paper Mario: The Oragami King" sounds.

D&D gifs is doable, top 5 movie of all time for me.
Are either Paper Mario games available on eshop? Or is that what Pete meant by expensive?

Which Paper Mario games should I seek out? Better than Super Mario RPG? Either of the first two. And yes, both are better than Super Mario RPG. You are in for a treat, they are two of the most charming, funny, and well written JRPGs ever.

Super Mario RPG is a solid 6 or 7/10 game. I can imagine other Mario RPGs topping it.

Let's face it, Super Mario RPG is hardly a classic Final Fantasy on the JRPG scale. Platforming can be annoying at times. The character progression and battle mechanics are pretty limited. It's fun, but nothing spectacular. Definitely not above a 7/10 for me.
I guess it does succeed very well as a JRPG for people who are not into the intricate storytelling and drawn out cutscenes, and hundreds of hours of gameplay, for those who just want to pick up and play, and want to see a different side of the Super Mario universe.

One gripe I do have with the game is warp pipes. Too often you hit down but walk right off it due to the way the d pad works. My favorite aspect is seeing enemies, so not lame random battles. Like most entries in the Paper and Luigi series the battles are truly active so there's less press aaaaaaa for enemies.
Basically what created Bowser's personality from then on. It also helps likely pushing jrpgs in the west. Maybe not ff7 levels but I'm sure more than a few got their start between the two. It's a great beginner rpg and hell it even served to introduce me to a ton of anime tropes like the sweatdrop, fainting and humor in general.

Ever considered applying for IGN with those takes Emp? I kid, I actually think you've nailed it. What I will say is that the battle mechanics were novel for their time. Square did a wonderful job of incorporating Mario properties into the system and introducing a timing mechanic that maimixed and minimised damage. It was still strategy dependant, but there was an extra reward for skill which very few JRPGs had, especially those out in the west. I wouldn't be surprised if it introduced that mechanic. The adventure is paced extremely well, constantly pushing the player forward and it's story expands on the Mario universe without disappearing up it's own ass with themes. In a way, it's a lot more consistent than a lot of FF stories which struggle to find a happy medium between telling a story and being an enjoyable game. Graphically it's one of the more advanced titles on the Super Nintendo and the music is strong as well. It's the chicken noodle soup for the soul of JRPGs.
Paper Mario actually scales things back even further since it was designed by Intelligent Systems (Fire Emblem, Advance Wars) not Squaresoft. I actually think it stands out more as Super Mario RPG still felt like a Final Fantasy game in some areas.

It's the chicken noodle soup for the soul of JRPGs. So you're equating the Origami King to Forrest Gump?

Origami King is the straight to video sequel which 'true fans' pass off as enjoyable because their girlfriends bought them a copy and they have to pretend to love it.
There's a strong part of me that's extremely jealous you most likely saw a copy of this at Toys R Us or Walmart.

I don't understand the IGN reference, but good post. They're known for giving ridiculous scores and just giving shoddy takes in general.
eg. God Hand received a lower score than some shovelware game.

That was massive L giving a game like God Hand a 3/10 or whatever the heck they gave it, especially when they recognized the said game as a top 100 PS2 title years later. Just because you might not be GOOD at the game does not mean the game sucks. Reminds me of the people who were angry FROM Software did not include a normal/easy mode for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

It was rare to come across Nintendo Power in Australia, the best magazine available was Super Play/N64/NGC Magazine. Did you ever get them over in Pittsburgh?

I can't remember if I got a subscription as a birthday or Christmas present, or if they were just that prevalent here, but I recall getting issues on the regular for a stretch. It's where I first learned about the upcoming Goldeneye!
