Currently in the US alone we have more than a few promotions with strong women's divisions and women's rosters in general. Women's matches sin the US are consistently being given much more time than they have in the past. You add to that decent Joshi scene in Japan, and some notable workers in the Lucha scene in Mexico.
Despite all of this I don't think anyone would argue that the quality we have now matches the Joshi scene in the 80's and 90's.
During that time period in Japan women's wrestling was incredibly popular just look at the crazy crowd reactions to the Crush Girl's matches , and how many of their fans were teenage girls./women
The matches/wrestling in the 80's wasn't as flashy as the 90's, but the crowd connection was stronger.
The 90's were when some of the most notable joshi matches happened. The work produced during this time was incredibly innovative with countless different moves being innovated by women during this time. If you use Meltzer as a measurement of quality for this period then Manami Toyota has 17 5-star matches alone during this time period , and several more happening without her as well.
Not only was the wrestling memorable but the characters ( Bull Nakano, Akira Hokuoto, and Aja Kong for example) and storylines ( Bull vs Aja, Hokuoto vs Kandori, Toyota vs Yamada) were as well.
My question is will we ever get to a point where women are producing at a level similar to this time period? Or was this just an example of catching lightning in a bottle?
