Said I was going to do it at the end of the 2000's countdown but there's been a ton of talk about it so I might as well make the thread now. This will be the 100th countdown and last movie countdown (I might try something else and start back at one) but here it is.
Feel free to send me a list anytime between now and list #99. No rush though , you have time to put some thought into it.

Starting my list this week. I don’t know what will be harder: deciding my #1 or figuring out where my top 20-30 rank. This is going to be nuts.

Excluding this year I see between 50-100 films a year at the cinema + whatever I watch at home so I thought this list would be easy.
My brain: forgets every movie I’ve ever seen, ever.

I used to watch a ton of movies myself. I think from 17-19 I saw 3-4 movies a month, almost weekly. I love the movie going experience. After Joker I started just making a list and going with streaming instead. I'm way behind as I just saw Jumanji "3" so I got catching up to do.

Got 2 lists in already from the lovely couple!
Also not pertaining to anyone in particular but make sure the list you submit me is the final one , usually when it's ten or fifteen I don't mind going back and fixing redo's or whatever but this is too mammoth of a project.

What do people think will be missing from their list? In terms of genres or any sort of category you can think of.
I may have no musical on my list and that includes Disney films. Even though I don't consider them musicals, though they technically are. Nobody hears the word musical and thinks The Lion King. They think Singin' in the Rain, which is the one musical that may get into the bottom of my 100. It is a bit of a blind spot genre for me overall, but I have seen some of the big hitters and it isn't a genre that does it much for me.
I know animation isn't a genre, rather a different form, but I might not have a hand-drawn animation on my list. Grave of the Fireflies is the one that could get in there.
Even though I'm a fan of the MCU and others, I don't think there will be a superhero film on my list. The Dark Knight would probably make top 200, but not 100.
I won't be placing any documentaries. I still think of them as a separate thing, but my stance on that is softening.
Anyone going to have no silent films? No black-and-white? No foreign-language?

I'm gonna guess the silent films will be lost. Knowing some of the people here, there'll probably be some votes for Japanese movies, mostly anime and samurai ones. And of course, there'll be some black and white representation. You can bet on that.

I have a few B&W's on my list but silent films I just can't get into. I tried Nosferatu on TCM once and just couldn't...
I do have a couple of musicals on my list but they aren't your traditional old time classic ones. Animation and documentaries didn't make the cut either for me.
I have most of this week off so I'll be trying to get an order pinned down on my top 100.

Most SciFi will be gone from my list , especially the most notable ones. Just never my thing. I have a ton of glaring omissions in that genre.

Off the top of my head....
I'll likely have a few black & whites. Not a lot though. I'm thinking maybe 3. Not only will I have musicals, there is a good chance I will have 3 musicals in my Top 50. I might even throw a silent film on the bottom of my list. That would be perfect for #100. It all depends on how the rest of my list plays out. No foreign language films and I'm thinking no animated films make the cut either.

I imagine most flavours of movies will make my list. Black and white. At least one silent film. Most genres. Animation. Foreign.
There won't be any (non-Disney) musicals. No sports films. Depends on what you count as a sports film, I guess. Would Million Dollar Baby count? That's the only sports-themed film I can think of that may crack a shot at the top 100. Not sure there will be any war films. Probably no biopics, and certainly no documentaries.

Not sure there will be any war films. Probably no biopics, and certainly no documentaries. Sports films is an interesting one. I guess, like how Disney films are musicals but I don't think of them as such, I don't think of say Raging Bull as a sports film. It's a biographical dramatic character study of a boxer. To me, when I think sports film, I think of it building up to a climactic sporting event, such as the Rocky films. I also don't think of Raging Bull as a biopic, when it clearly is. I guess when I hear the word biopic, I think of films about people who were already very widely famous: Mozart (Amadeus), Gandhi, Malcolm X, Johnny Cash (Walk the Line). Ali makes me immediately think biopic, Raging Bull doesn't. But GoodFellas is technically a biopic. So does that mean no GoodFellas? Lawrence of Arabia? Schindler's List? The Social Network? Or do you think of the word like I do? War is another genre where films that may make my list (Das Boot, Threads, Grave of the Fireflies) don't make me immediately categorise it like that in my mind, when they certainly can be considered as such. There is such a wide-breadth of war films that I imagine yours would be the only list without one if that's how it shakes out.

Started constructing my list now. I've made a provisional top 33.
Despite Tarantino being my favourite director, he might not even have a film in the Top 50. If so, it may only be one. I imagine he'll have several in the 50-100 range though.
I'm discovering that I prejudices and biases. For example, I am more likely to rank a film that's known as an absolute classic over a film I love just as much, but that is relatively obscure. Also I'm pushing comedies further and further down, because serious always trumps comedy, right? Especially a silly comedy like Elf. It's one of my favourite comedy movies, yet I am feeling blasphemous ranking it over some of the films I have ranked it over. It's also hard to compare genres and eras. Just gotta go with my gut, I guess, and rewatch any films that need reevaluating.

I'm just going with favorites so prejudices and biases will abound on my list.
I'll be starting my ranking shortly, oof.

Also I'm pushing comedies further and further down, because serious always trumps comedy, right? A comedy (black admittedly) could be my #1. I'd be surprised if The Naked Gun isn't in my top 50. I'm sure it will look suitably ridiculous at a glance next to whatever it ends up placing ahead of. But do I genuinely think it is one of the greatest films ever made? Absolutely.

But do I genuinely think it is one of the greatest films ever made? Absolutely. I could hardly say the same about Elf. But that's maybe my film snobbery talking. "A silly Will Ferrell film cannot possibly be great!", I say as I snort, causing my monocle to plop into my freshly brewed Earl Grey tea. It is one of my favourites though.

Got around 35 ranked so far. My top 10 is solid but those first outliers beyond that is like picking between favorite children. Plus it seems I have certain genres just lumped together which I'm not liking right now. This is going to be a long work in progress.

I was worried about leaving no stone unturned. Wife had a good idea: just work through the alphabet, stepping through the pages on Wikipedia that list "A" movies, "B" movies, etc. Finished that last night as a first pass. Have 475 to whittle down now. Earmarked some surefire locks as I went. Am interested to go back through the 475 and see how many I earmarked on this second pass now... As I practice being unable to go back to sleep before 5am.

Did you finish just "A" and "B" or the whole alphabet?

Did you finish just "A" and "B" or the whole alphabet? Whole alphabet, including titles starting with numbers. Parsing down has been going... OK. Dreading ranking the "final" 100.
