PW NEWS EPISODE 71 (17:47)
FINALLY HAVE THE ANSWERS: This episode I flip things upside down (literally) as I change gears to give you the news in reverse order. That's right, starting with Vidya! No updates here I just shame Emperor for taking 20 years to finish Kingdom Hearts. It's a PS2 game so he literally could have done that. Maybe not 20, but pretty close. Foos seems to tag everyone in the week's Whatcha Gettin, except for me. Even Lony got tagged and he doesn't even like us anymore. What's a guy gotta do to get some love around here? I guess we know who didn't miss me during my 72 hour hiatus!
A LITTLE SPANKTERVISION: Got two Roadtrip updates since yesterday was an early episode. First up is Tommy Boy, the Chris Farley classic. Love this movie and think anyone who doesn't is probably really bad at chess. In addition to that we also had the original Vacation movie, a classic Dad comedy and a rare instance where a movie predated my birth that I've actually seen. All hail Wally-World, but not the evil empire that only attracts ghetto trash as consumers. Get your Female Directors movies in. They've done 10, right?
@kitpowers007 @pastygangsta12 @gralia12 - Who is they?
PW NEWS SUCK IT~!

Ahh. I see @ness is covering all those new users now
Something tells me these '12' people will be hawking their wares any time now.
I saw those Farley/Spade movies years ago but remember nothing about them. Actually, I do remember one thing. Both of those guys got on my nerves.
Should have listened to this episode before I posted in the thread for the last one. Ness covers a lot of the stuff I mentioned in that post during this installment of PW News.
The WWF tv match of the week often came from Shotgun/Jakked in 98-99. The Hardys/APA/Too Much/Brood/Kaientai would frequently go all out in these fun little 5 minute actionfests.
Arguing about eras bores me. But I personally have always considered Wrestlemania 13-Wrestlemania 17 to be the Attitude Era.
So CM Punk was ragging on Styles way back when AJ was still in TNA? I was not aware of that.

I know he ragged on him during his ROH title reign where he criticized the fans for wanting the return of guys that have left while he stayed, called out AJ for not backing the boys ability to work ROH while being TNA Champ. No idea if they still have NUCLEAR HEATZ though.

I hate Tommy Boy and I am bad at Chess. I'm not a very strategic person and games of strategy tend to elude me.

Did anyone catch how @ness pronounced the word "premise"? He rhymed it with mice, not with miss. Is that how it's said in America?
Come on dude, you know how long these JRPGs last. At least I have the intestinal fortitude to see it through to the end, unlike you, quitting KH3 immediately because it has some cutscenes.
I do my research thoroughly so each significant game write up takes an hour or two. Sometimes I just don't have the motivation to invest that time.

@ness, don't worry bud. Will tag you in every post I make about comics going forward. I gotchu Nesticle. Tommy Boy is an all-time classic. Of course, I was 14 when it came out, so that was a perfect dumb teenage boy movie for me. Emperor, I'm Canadian, but I would pronounce it "PREM-MISS". I don't listen to these things, so I don't know how Ness said it.

Here's something I never knew about. It's been pointed out numerous times of me pronouncing premise a certain way. Like I have no idea it was even part of my vocabulary.

I never believed in miracles and then I read 🤯's post. Get in! Unlike Bake, I live for discussing eras. I'm also going to call Baker an outright liar because he nailed the Attitude Era timeline. March 1997 works as the jumping off point since Raw transitioned into Raw Is War which included the introduction of The Beautiful People theme song and the new set design. We also know behind the scenes, Vince made a massive change to creative after the awful European tapings and promoted Russo as the head writer of the show. Wrestlemania 17 works because that was the end of the McMahon-Austin era and once they ended that storyline the fans stopped caring. In terms of production it actually didn't shift until the 2002 Brand Extension, but the dynamic certainly felt off. It reminded me of old sit-coms where popular cast members would leave and they'd keep the show going even though fans were tuning out in droves. I view Wrestlemania X-8 as the end of an era and the culmination of the Monday Night Wars. Hogan-Rock, Flair-Undertaker, Edge-Booker, Austin-Hall, Jericho-HHH with a couple of showcases for DDP and Rob Van Dam. Then the Brand Extension takes place and the entire promotion changes until early 2008.

Did anyone catch how @ness pronounced the word "premise"? Yep. Nope. Unless it's an Ohio thing? =================== I'm glad you mentioned it. I picked up on Ness' unusual pronunciation of "premise" a few weeks back, but didn't comment because I didn't want to be that guy. And maybe it is an Ohio thing? I mean, my fellow Baltimoreans speak like this....

I've been commenting on @ness's PREH-MYZE for forever. Y'all so slow on the uptake, I guess it's OK I'm backlogged so much. By the time I catch up, we'll all be on the same page.

From Ohio and I pronounce it as "prem-miss". Can confirm it's not an Ohio thing but Southern Ohio is also kind of a different beast altogether.
Some people say "warsh" instead of "wash" here. Crayons are also "crowns" and anyone who says "cray-own" or "cray-on" is a deranged sociopath.

According to Wife, there's no difference when I say pen or pin. I still don't understand why there would or should be. Lynyrd Skynyrd, babay!!~ You should hear her try to say pull/pool/pole, bull/bowl, or hot dog.

Holy shit, it's like someone threw accents from Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Boston into a blender and then applied peanut butter to the roof of the mouth... Gold. I don't think there's much of a difference between Baltimore and Philadelphia accents. Some Delwareans (Cheetah Master & Mr. Ooh La La come to mind) also have real strong "Baltimore" accents. "Warsh" for wash is big here too. My old man and other relatives from his side of the family say "ool" instead of "oil." I won't even attempt to write out the bizarre way my mom says "aluminum." Not sure if that's a Baltimore thing or just a mom thing though. My cousins were big on "crowns." I, a deranged psychopath, pronounce it "crayon." I once got ribbed by an out of towner for pronouncing "hurricane" as "hairicane." Also for pronouncing "Mexico" as "Mexeeco." The Baltimore accent usually isn't as strong with younger people, though exceptions do exist, and some things still trickle down. My brother once confused a waitress in Florida (he was in town for a softball tournament! in a nice bit of synchronicity with a post from a few days back) when he ordered "wooder" to drink. It apparently took a minute or so before the waitress understood he wanted "water." The "Bel Air Rd." that showed up in the video is actually like 2 minutes from my house. I had a high school math teacher who came to Baltimore from Pittsburgh, of all places. This probably would have been back in the 70s. This is the story he told our class.... He asked for directions. The person he asked told him to find "Blair Road" and do whatever. Teacher drives around forever looking for "Blair Road." He eventually figures out, or is set straight, that "Blair Road= Bel Air Road." Apparently he drove by it multiple times before finally figuring this out. My older relatives and my mom's one friend are so Baltimore it hurts. I imagine you guys would need subtitles to understand them just as I need subtitles whenever I hear a Scot speaking. At least I know how to say "rural" though. It's "rurl." Duh.

At least I know how to say "rural" though. It's "rurl." Duh. I'd pay good money to see two people with thick accents from Pittsburgh and Baltimore try to understand each other. The people that kill me here are the ones who've never lived in Kentucky or West Virginia a day in their lives but sound like they just crawled out from the boonies, some of which are even in my family. The Great Crayon debate is a good one. I actually think "cray-on" makes complete sense in theory but when someone says it out loud it just sounds weird. I'm sure others feel the same when I say "crown" lol. The weirdest to me though is the East Coast calling everything "coke" instead of "soda" or good ol' Midwestern vernacular: "pop". I would be so confused as a waiter... how do you differentiate? "Will that be Pepsi Coke, Dr. Pepper Coke, a regular Coke Coke or some old-fashioned Coke Coke Coke?" "Ruler" was probably the wrong description actually. It's more like "rur-earl" when I say it. I don't know why, I've just always had trouble with it.

Pretty sure that Baltimore family are aliens from another planet who are trying to speak English as best as they can.
Although a proper Irish accent really takes the cake.
Yes, he is speaking the English language, believe it or not.

Yes, he is speaking the English language, believe it or not. I refuse to believe that first Irish farmer is speaking English. I did make out about 3 words of English but the rest is in what I presume to be Gaelic. Here's another good Baltimore accent video. The whole video is gold but my favorite part is the first guy having a revelation.

I am often told I have an accent. One lady actually thought I came from North Dakota as I have a very Fargo like accent. It's strange because I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, but have been in Edmonton since I was 2. For whatever reason, I've picked up what is known as the 'Ottawa Valley' accent. Strange because neither of my parents had it and were born and raised there, but I do and only spent summers and Christmases there. Often people think I'm from the Maritime Provinces or upper USA.
My friends here LOVE to tease me on words I say like Tiger. I pronounce it like 'tagger'. Balls and Benny once told me I had a Mother Canuckan accent.

Saving the best for last... Ocracoke Brogue Ocracoke is an island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's secluded island status lead to many linguistic quirks. My family took summer vacations to Ocracoke about every other year when I was growing up in the 80s & 90s. The top Youtube comment says it best.... "It's like if the American South and England had a baby who was partially raised by its Australian nanny." Yes, they really talked that way. And no, I did not understand them. I would just politely nod my head when conversing with the locals. Those locals had names like Conch and Jupiter. Then there was a set of brothers known as Ziggy & Juicy. The guy sitting down on the right was well known to my family and I. His name is James Barry (or Barrie). My mom just confirmed this. He ran the local general store. Sold cans of delicious Dad's Root Beer for the low, low price of 22 cents. The best part? James Barry actually married a woman from Baltimore. I have no idea if they had children, but I really hope they did just for the Baltimore-meets-Ocracoke accent. Can you imagine??

If I pay attention I can make out pretty much every word of the Ocracoke accent. To me it's not that cryptic.
