Next month I'll be graduating with my bachelor's. So I started applying to jobs early, and got several calls right away. About two weeks ago, I started a new job that I was really excited about. The downfall is that I'm basically working street corners from 11 PM to 7 AM. It's been an adjustment to working at night. Not so much on staying awake, but being able to sleep during the day. That and this job is entirely boring.
Who else here has worked midnights? Do you like it? I admit there are some perks to it.

I worked graves or midnights for a couple years and while it had it's perks it also had some drawbacks as well. I think it was harder for me too because I had kids at the time - had I been single and been able to sleep whenever I wanted I think it would of been a lot easier on me. I always tried to treat it like really early mornings.
My advice on trying to sleep during the day:
1. Most important - buy some legit 100% blackout curtains. This is really a must.
2. I don't know if you live alone or what but something to make some white noise can help a bunch.
3. A lot of people that I knew had a tough time falling asleep would take melatonin. I never had trouble because of how I treated it.

I worked till midnight for 3 years, and as UT said, get some decent blackout curtains. And if possible sleep in the backroom of your place if possible. Anywhere away from street noise. Make sure you get your sleep.

My husband works night's now and he loves it. No traffic when he heads to work. And 3rd shift doesn't ha e very many people so he doesn't have a lot to deal with. Plus he gets a 15% shift differential for working 3rd. He makes as much hourly as the shift leaders on 1st shift.

My last job started @ 3 am. Slowly it shifted to midnight. I found my body never adjusted. I had a sleep schedule, but always found myself taking naps in the middle of the day. Like I'd get my 6-8 sleep... work for 8... get home and then crash for a few... dinner... sleep... repeat. Perhaps it was my lack of exposure to the sun? It was retail, so there was no differential. My job now has one where you get an extra 1-2/hr depending on where you are on pay steps, only it's from 6 pm to 6 am. When I worked 2-10 everyone would take their lunch @ 530 because I'm sure an extra 30 of diff pay fucking mattered...
I'm 6-2 now I see the sun and get vitamin D!

@ness, No shift differential? That's a deal breaker for me.

Excited about a boring job working a corner overnight? Wow. Different standards in life. I hope the job you graduate for is more generally desirable.

What is the job? To me it sounds like your a drug dealer or a pimp working street corner late and night...although that sounds exciting and not boring like your job apparently is.
I worked overnights briefly. It sucks and isn't for me. I like sunlight. There is something very off putting about being awake all night.

I have worked odd shifts for the last 7 years. Usually I start at 5am and finish at 12pm, some days I finish later and for much of last year, I started earlier. I won't say I'm used to it as I still get tired and I sleep when I get home, but I feel like I'd find it weird going to any normal shift now.
