Color me shocked that Baker is such a huge Citizen Kane mark. Did not see that one coming. This pleases me. I like keeping people on their toes. Would hate to become too predictable. Matrix may have made my top 100, had I only ever watched it once. Unfortunately, I haven’t only watched sit once. It would have fallen in the 150-200 range for me. Same here. Hopefully no newspaper movies make the final cut.

Citizen Kane is a bottom 100 movie. I'm serious. Boring trite garbage. The cinephiles among us should explain what they see in this movie. It's just an interesting story that is incredibly well acted and incredibly well shot. There's many technical aspects about how it was shot and delicately crafted that one could go on about, but it's understandable none of this really matters if you didn't enjoy the story. The topic is a bit more curious than your typical narrative story. You kind of just have to be interested by such things. Boring to a lot perhaps, but it does earn its "best of all time" title on the technical attributes.
Those aren't everything, which is part of why I only placed it at #54 (though most films above it have technical beauty in spades as well). But the bottom line is, me and many others did find the story captivating...so that in combination with the cool and intelligent way it was crafted is what makes us see a lot in it.
When did you last watch it? Not sure, a long time ago. At least five years. I did watch the whole movie, but I can't claim to have been interested in very much. A lot of your commentary about Citizen Kane goes way over my head. I rarely "admire" technical aspects of a film because I don't know what I should be admiring. There are special effects? I didn't know that. Maybe it's the type of technique that's become commonplace but was completely mindblowing in the 1940s. I am going to provide a more comprehensible interpretation of Strobe's post: It is truly masterpiece. It used a lot of techniques well and in tandem. It is technically amazing. I did not fully get into the story because I was too amazed. Old shots = magic. Citizen Kane is one of the great special effects films of all time, but also other things. Amazing acting. Excellent makeup. Great shots and great lines. Story flows well. Cool news segments. Transitions between scenes are cool. Film school mumbo jumbo was good. Can you ever really know someone? Can they ever really know themselves? The cast is fantastic. For me, it lacks the magicalest magic for my #1 spot. Basically, he said the same thing as me in the start of this post.
To make a music comparison, maybe Citizen Kane is that highly technical piece of jazz music that sounds kinda good to the layperson, you can get the basic rhythm and bob your head, but only a musician, perhaps only a great musician, can really appreciate its greatness. That's the impression I have of Citizen Kane. The greatest film ever for film experts, a regular film for regular people. I wholeheartedly disagree with this analogy. While I understand why you would think that and that Strobe's post, while very insightful, made it kind of seem that way...there is not really much mystery here. There's just some techniques utilized in the shots that you could learn about quickly with some light reading. But cold, emotionless technical attributes are not why people like the movie. These things affect the film in very substantial ways, even if you aren't immediately conscious of it. Things like the camera looking up at the character when you want to give the impression of him being powerful. It may be good "because they utilized that technique", but it wouldn't be good if that technique didn't work. The movie is enjoyable because it made you feel the character was powerful during that scene, which just adds to the overall experience like many of the other little things.
The same reason why any movie is good. It's just all-around put together well which makes it enjoyable (provided the story isn't boring the shit out of you).
12. Citizen Kane (1941, Orson Welles)
At last, one from my list has made the top 100. I want to set aside the discussion about Citizen Kane’s place in American film history. It’s a really interesting discussion, but I think it can incorrectly make people think that we’re ranking it because of its importance or technical advancements. Those things are very significant, but irrelevant to my own personal list of favourites. I ranked it highly because it’s genuinely one of my favourite films to watch. I just genuinely don’t understand the boring comments - for me it’s really easy to watch and incredibly captivating and the time flies by. It’s an incredibly sharp commentary on the politics of its time, but in a way that still feels very relevant and challenging. It’s one of the finest acting performances ever, and I find the ending very emotionally involving. Great film. I almost wish it wasn’t so revered and hailed as the best film ever, as I think that prejudices people before they watch it and many don’t give it a fair shake. Very well said. This is straight to the point of what I was trying to get at. Reading this, it seems strange that you did not place Throne of Blood. Everything you said here applies to that movie as well just as much, I feel. Have you not seen many Kurosawa movies? I have a feeling you would love them given your otherwise good taste from your revealed list so far.
If you have seen them and just didn't place any, I will fight you.
91. Citizen Kane- PW and I agree. Citizen Kane is the 91st Greatest Film of all Time. I think that's a good spot for it. Respected enough to crack the Top 100, but there are 90 movies PW and I would rather watch. A respectable comment. I feel 91 is very fitting for a PW list as well. I only placed it halfway up my list because, while it is a fantastic movie and put together so well, there's definitely a ton of movies that are just a lot cooler or otherwise more enjoyable.

I had The Matrix pegged for like top 25. I'm shocked.
#3 - The Matrix #9 - Shaun of the Dead #16 - V For Vendetta #20 - Ocean's Eleven #28 - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl #29 - Apollo 13 #30 - Back to the Future II #31 - Men In Black #32 - Mean Girls #35 - Full Metal Jacket #37 - Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood #39 - Uncle Buck #47 - E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial #58 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off #59 - Braveheart #60 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring #61 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King #62 - Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse #64 - Tommy Boy #88 - Catch Me If You Can #95 - In Bruges #97 - Hot Fuzz
Incredible movie. I will never get tired of it. Blew my mind the first time I saw it and that feeling never really went away. I've seen it probably more than 20 times. And its one of those movies I can't wait to share with my kids. Much of my top 100 is but this one in particular. I know my daughter will love it.

I looked at my list and I had Turtles at #10 and was surprised , I should have had it a lot higher. Don't know what I was thinking the day I made my list about TMNT should be no lower than #3 and in contention for the top spot on my list.
I have a turtles obsession , I collect everything turtles and have loved them since I was a child. This movie was a huge part of that and I don't think there is a movie on the planet that I've seen more than the original TMNT (the sequel is in the convo too). I watched it whenever I could , probably multiple times a day on some days and even as I grow older and have shown it to my children ... it is one of our go to movies for a lazy afternoon and I'm never mad or disappointed that its on.
I still think it's the best puppetry on any of the turtles as well and think it holds up. It is still pretty dark and even adult themed (and adult joke) for a childs movie and that's why I think it holds up the best as well and why #2 took such a drastic turn.
I'll always be Team Michaelangelo and growing up I was so anti-Raph. I get it now though , and appreciate his plight... plus Leo can be annoying.
Also I don't care what anyone tells me , the scenes and part at the farmhouse is fantastic and well thought out and beautifully depicted. Even subtle things like Mikey not speaking at all during that time works and is effective. Just stuff you'd never expect to see from a Turtles movie.

The OG TMNT was 1000% exactly how you convert a beloved cartoon or comic into a live action success.
Fucking LOVED. Even loved the sequel. The third left something to be desired from what I vaguely recall.
Only qualm overall? Not enough April tits.

TMNT is my #3 movie of all time. And I could probably go on a day about everything I love about it. But with limited time I’ll just do my best: 1) As comic book movies go, it’s about as close as you’ll get to source material. It was dark. It followed the comic book so closely. It was funny. It was everything that had made them over with the original fans. 2) It was my favorite thing in childhood. I collected the toys growing up and this movie was my launching off point. It’s what got me hooked. I still low-key collect Turtle figures and I can pinpoint it back to this movie. 3) As far as scenes go. Donatello: Nice night. Michaelangelo: Mm-hm. Pizza dude's got thirty seconds. Donatello: Mm-hm. Hey Mikey, did you ever think about what Splinter said tonight? I mean about what it would be like... You know, not having him? Michaelangelo: Hmm... Time's up, three bucks off! / Donnie: You’re claustrophobic. Casey: You want a fist in the mouth? I’ve never even looked at another guy before. 4) I’m a huge Donnie fan. Wasn’t always that way. I grew up in the Leo camp. But the 2012 cartoon series pulled me more towards Donnie. This is just another one of those films I watch every year. It breaks my heart every time they try something new with them and it doesn’t work out. The 2014 movie was complete trash. There are always rumors of live action shows or CGI cartoon films (which I think is in the works now). I just want someone to take over and do it right. As far as comics go. The most current IDW series was my all time favorite. Those are all great scenes , I like the scene where Raph wakes up too and tells Leo it’s all going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. Also the fire pit scene where Splinter appears and they all cry. I’ll be damned if that wasn’t as emotional as a kids movie got for me. Love that. Casey Jones line too , I still laugh at it - wanted to use it as the quote for the post but it needs the context. Raph and Casey Jones first meeting too. Cricket?! The big showdown where April’s place burns down. Really just the whole movie , as you said - that’s how you translate source material. It was exactly what it had to be. Fun fact too: it was the highest grossing independent film for nearly a decade.

They were 1a and 1b and I get that people hate on it for doing a 180 from three darker tones of the original but as a kid it was so much damn fun. That opening scene in the store (COMBAT COLDCUTS )was great. The OG is the better film for a multitude of reasons , and the knockoff Bebop and Rocksteady is weird but it’ll always be a fun watch for me and Vanilla Ice is fun at the end GO NINJA GO NINJA GO! Plus that underground train station. Fuck if I didn’t want to live there with the turtles.

Was not expecting TMNT in the top 100, awesome.
Had this been 1991 it would have contended for top 10 status. I've kind of detached myself from the franchise since they fell out of favor in the mid 90's. It even feels like a bit of a slog getting through all the seasons of the classic animated series which I purchased for nostalgia sake nearly 10 years ago. I'm in the midst of the marathon season 3.

Turtles III was stupid and a total waste. I don’t even watch it when I’m doing my yearly watch through. Turtles II still has a special place in my heart and I watch it yearly too. But it’s just not as good as the original. Exactly. Both made my Top 100 , I couldn’t in good conscience leave SOTO off my list. Also agree on the third , least favorite of them all. Ranking them it would probably be OG from 1991 Secret of the Ooze Michael Bays first one TMNT (the CGI animated one) Michael Bay second one #3 I don’t really count the made for TV one , that was terrible on a different scale.

I'll be driving that garbage truck along with this movie inside. Not the Turtles maiden. Say what you will about Brock, but leave the Turtles out of this. I can't say much because it's apparent this is a favorite for most of you and brings a sense of nostalgia which is what most of my list is based on especially my #1. I just wasn't into the TMNT so it's significance is lost on me and certainly doesn't appeal to me as a Top 100 movie, but again this is a subjective list. What works for one does not blow the wind up the skirt of the other.

First TMNT wasn't on my list, but it's actually a pretty good movie in it's own right. It absolutely NAILS it's source material and the Turtles look amazing on film. They also really got the personality of every Turtle down cold. Opposite from UT my favorite was Raphael, mainly because he easily kicked the most ass. Also since the Turtles were teenagers after all he represented the whole angsty part of teen life.
The movie also does a very solid job of nailing April O'Neil and Casey Jones. I think they could have done a better job with Shredder, but it's a minor nitpick. Overall TMNT was easily a solid 8 out of 10 for me.
The rest of the films are pure shit though. Secret of the Ooze is damn near unwatchable for me. I guess I can understand trying to rake in the kiddie cash, but that dosen't make it any less garbage.
Then the franchise became yet another intellectual property that Michael Bay has smeared with feces. I guess ruining Transformers wasn't enough.

The movie also does a very solid job of nailing April O'Neil. I don't recall her getting nailed in the movie, but this explains why 🤯 likes it so much. It sounds like he's pretty confident he could do a much better job of it if given the chance.

Definitely in Raphael's, Michaelangelo's, Donatello's Mount Rushmore.
Not sure about Leonardo, he's been in some classics and this movie might not make the top 4.

As far as franchises go. 1) TMNT 2) Star Wars HUGE GAP 3) DC HUGE GAP 4) Everything else Ummmm...You must have fallen down a sewer and hit your head on the way down. TMNT BEFORE Star Wars? I think not.
