Alexander O'Neal Thank You for a good year was number 1 on my list. He has a great voice, to bad he couldn't get off the drugs while he was in his prime.

Sufjan Stevens was a little too melancholy for me. Thank You For A Good Year is a great song. Surprised we didn't here this one more often during that renaissance of Christmas music in the 90's.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel was my number one I think. The Sufjan version isn't definitive, but I couldn't think of a definitive recorded version so that's what I went with. I'm glad you called it melacholy Shootist, because that's what advent is. My biggest struggle with Christmas the year I lived in Australia was that it was in the middle of summer. A huge part of the joy of Christmas is that is brings light and joy into the darkness of winter. It's why the White witch's curse in Narnia - that it's always winter, but never Christmas - is so effective. Looking forward to Christmas gets us through the initial shock and pain and bitterness of winter. O Come O Come Emmanuel is a song of expectant hope in the midst of the darkness, and that's what Christmas is about to me.

I too enjoy this song. When done well it fills my soul.
And it is dark here; starting at 4:30pm until 7:30am. I call it the Days of Perpetual Darkness because when you are inside all day, you get up and it's dark. Then when you go home or look outside it's dark. It's why we keep some of our Christmas/winter lights up/on until March. Well that and it's too cold to take them down.
