Daniels never bashed TNA before. Always directed fans to chant for the company rather than against another. Smart business because he always went back. Guess you know that's how bad it is.

They did not really bash then. Someone just made a one liner smartass remark as soon as they were off camera. It was funny and more of a shot at the old TNA powers that be.

Baker your boy challenged for the NEVER Openweight Championship in NJPW. Damn, I hope they air that match sometime. Maybe Emp, HF or myself should watch it on your behalf. Is there anything you would want us to keep note of? What beer he's drinking? How many he gets through? How many sentons he hits? Your other boy, Flip, was also apart of a fun three-way involving KUSHIDA and Hiromu Takahashi.

I saw Emp's review but what did you think of the match? Goto was involved in my favorite Punishment Martinez match ever at last year's Honor Rising. Surely he can at least equal that outing against the man, the myth, the legend, the Beer! City! Bruiser! SM I saw that as well. And it made me think. Why is BCB pulling double duty? Is he Big In Japan? Are we looking at the next Cheeseburger here? I love how BCB has been a semi-regular for 3 years now. I was just hoping he'd get a few more bookings after first seeing him in the Top Prospect Tournament a couple years ago. Expectations exceeded. I haven't seen more than 5 minutes of an ROH show in months. Every time I turn it on (which has admittedly been rare) I almost immediately turn it right back off. Are they doing the Top Prospect Tournament this year? It's usually around this time of the year but I can't find anything online. I tend to like TP matches far more than regular ROH matches. They never wear out their welcome and (gasp!) actually have psychology. Even boring "Lil" Will Ferrara had two good TP matches a few years ago. Plus I almost always find A Guy. First Hanson. Then the immortal BCB. I missed the whole thing the year Lio Rush won. And last year was Preston Quinn with his glorious Terry Funk meets Dick Murdoch ways (too bad he never got booked again). I'm sure there will be a new Baker Guy to be found this year. So maybe I'll tune in again once (if?) that starts up.

I'm in the same boat. I watched everything up to Final Battle, enjoyed the show fine but had my fill. I plan on watching the ROH/NJPW show eventually as apart of my goal to catch every NJPW show this year, but I've got a long way to go on that goal.
I still can't get my head around BCB being a top prospect. Of all the guys coming up in American wrestling, the best you can find is a guy who's likely on dialysis? Uncle.Should have been introduced as Silas' drinking buddy and an example of what a 'real man' is like during his feud against The Boys.
I need to figure out what happened to that Matt Morgan wannabe Donovan Dijack. He's my pick for NXT Champion in 2020. You read it here first.

Is Marty Scurll’s “Villain” gimmick anything beyond the entrance attire and umbrella?
Everything else I see with him is just a relatively trendy looking guy. In the BC split, he talked about just wanting to be with his friends (which is about the least “Villanous” thing I can think of someone saying).
I’m not a regular watcher of any of his work, so maybe I’ve missed a lot of character development.

It's just for show.
Scurll is the modern day equivalent of Napoleon. A guy with a chip on his shoulder who self-diagnosis as a villain, but really he's just a showmen. He loves to flap his arms in the air like a bird, enjoys doing a jig before announcing his patenant chicken wing hold and will often slip over or do something silly through out the course of the match.
He's a Looney Tunes character come to life and for whatever reason, maybe the most over guy in the world. That 'woop woop' chant is everywhere these days, reminiscent of Flair's 'woo' chant in the 90s/00s.

I think Scurll is good until he gets into the ring, he has a very basic moveset and I get what they are trying to do but it looks terrible that he somehow always gets the upperhand over a vastly superior in ring talent like Osperay all the time. I know they are trying to build it to make it that finally when the Aerial Assassin does defeat The Villain that it means something but I think it works better if done in reverse where the superior talent is winning the matches time and time again until the other guy capture a victory.
It is weird because I LOVE Miz and Marty sort of comes from that mold but I just don't care much for watching him wrestle. I think it is because unlike Miz, Marty faces much more agile and grapplers on the Indy scene that he doesn't really mesh well with as far as in ring style goes. Miz has to work a more methodical match due to the schedules.

Scurll is the modern day equivalent of Napoleon. Is that a short joke? Aren't jokes supposed to be funny? More of an observation, but yes, he's the typical guy with a small-man complex. I wouldn't call Ospreay the superior ring talent. He's in the same boat as Scurll, except he relies too heavily on flips. This means a lot of moves can be telegraphed and he often finds himself caught in the middle of the ring with nowhere else to go. I agree that he doesn't do anything villanous and even the 'heel' moves like the finger snap and the chicken wing are set up like babyface maneuvers. It's sort of like Dolph who self-diagnosed himself as the #heel but would work matches like he's Shawn Michaels during the Ruthless Aggression era.

Scurll deliberately wrestles a more bare bones style. He can do flips and dives like Ospreay and every other cruiserweight, but he chooses not to in order to stand out. He said so when he was on Austin's podcast. He is technically sound, as British wrestlers tend to be, so his mat wrestling is often fascinating to watch. I assume that when he started the villain persona in Britain he was a legitimate heel, or at least that was the intention. But in modern times, when a wrestler is good at what they do and particularly if they are different, the crowd will sooner or later support them, no matter their alignment. That's exactly what happened to Scurll. I'm sure he had no idea how over he would actually become, but now that he's practically a babyface, there's no reason to change the gimmick. He's now more of a pantomime moustache-twirling villain than a true villain.
The only thing I dislike about him is the finger break spot. It's awful.

Punishment was originally with Whitmer (and Kevin Sullivan). I think he turned on BJ at some point and Whitmer...just disappeared.
I was impressed with Scurll at first. He hadn't been in the company long but already came across as a major star. He had a certain presence. Just exuded far more star power than your average ROH grappler. I thought the Villain gimmick had lots of potential. I popped for the finger break spot. He had some cool drivers and I'm always going to pop for a traditional piledriver or tombstone.
Yet by about the third time I saw Scurll I was already growing tired of him and by about the fifth time I was actively groaning. Worst. Villain. Ever. I find the dumb bird stuff and wooting so cringey. His whole shtick is just so try hard. The finger break spot is overused. I'd prefer it only be done a few times a year in heated grudge matches, not every single match he has. And shouldn't the entire locker room be walking around with bandages on their fingers at this point? It's kind of like HHH's sledgehammer....that never seriously hurts anybody. Last time I saw him he was spamming superkicks because ROH....Bullet Club....while doing an Eddie Guerrero cheating babyface gimmick. Forget Eddie. I'd rather watch Chavo over Scurll at this point.

If I was a promoter and had the opportunity to steal someone from ROH it would be Page. Adam Page and Marty Scurll...those are two guys I can really see shining in NXT. Page I could see actually becoming a bit timer on the main roster at some point. and I just love me some Marty. Everything about the guy is just so fucking entertaining.

I haven't watched ROH tv in months.
The other day I did find out they were coming to Baltimore for Best In The World. Checked out the card on the off chance Toru Yano or Tanahashi might be in town. I'd buy a ticket for Yano and consider going for Tanahashi. Turns out I didn't even get that far. Saw the main event was Cody vs. Dalton Castle vs. Marty Scurll and checked right back out  Nope. Not going. Even with the only other announced match (at the time) being Briscoes vs. Young Bucks, which is about the best possible match up between ROH regulars.

I've been thinking about the Cornette years a lot recently. I made a couple of posts on the ol' PW before the board started going crazy and didn't get into the issues outside of the ROH Championship following Tyler Black's departure. I've wanted to revisit those old shows just to jog my memory, but first I wanted to see how much things have changed in the past six years.
I loaded up the 6/15/18 show and straight away was greeted by a Bullet Club promo on Los Ingobernables de Japon where they speculated what the 'J' stood for. That was followed by a 'comedic' match between Chuckie T & Kenny King where both guys were more interested in hugging one another and posing for photos with the fans than wrestling.
Whatever theory I had of ROH being more of the same has been thrown out the window.

Meanwhile Best in the World (6/29) is shaping up as: ROH World Championship MatchMarty Scurll vs. Cody vs. Dalton Castle (c) ROH World Tag Team Championship MatchThe Young Bucks vs. The Briscoes (c) ROH World TV Baltimore Streetfight Championship MatchAdam Page vs. Punisher Martinez (c) ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship MatchLos Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, EVIL & SANADA) vs. The Kingdom (c) Flip Gordon vs. Bully Ray Sumie Sukai & Jenny Rose & Mayu Iwatani & Tenille Dashwood vs. Kelly Klein & Oedo Tai (Hazuki, Kagetsu & Hana Kimura) Jay Lethal vs. KUSHIDA Kenny King vs. Austin Aries -------------------------------------------------------- The Bullet Club's influence on the show is undeniable with all five ROH contracted members featuring in prominent spots on the card. Outside of Flip Gordon & Bully Ray, the rest of the show is filled with special guests from New Japan, STARDOM & Impact Wrestling. It reminds me of old NJPW shows from the late 00s/early 2010s where the majority of the card was filled with outsiders.

What do people think of Dalton Castle? I remember that people were worshipping him on the old boards before be became ROH champion. I watched the match where he won the title and one of his defenses (against Scurll I think) and he came across to me as completely unremarkable. Nothing more than a good entrance. He's an average at best fiery babyface and his moveset, or what I've seen of it, it uninspiring.

Dalton is a good character worker. He's not the most athletically gifted worker but he understands his character and he knows how to get the fans to eat out of the palm of his hand. When he debuted in 2015, he was a breath of fresh air. ROH had become increasingly bland, so the Freddy Mercury style character brightened the undercard up and provided the fans something different beyond the go-go-go matches. Normally a character like his flames out, but he and ROH have done a good job of taking things slow. Castle rarely won matches, but since he'd work every PPV and would work quality opponents like Kazuchika Okada or then TV Champion Bobby Fish, it meant something. Fans rallied behind him, so when he started winning matches, fans were happy for his success and pushed him to the moon.
I agree his ring-work could be better. I still have to watch his match against Jay Lethal at the Anniversary Show, but I would like to see him in more control and assert himself as the champion of the company. I believe the writing is on the wall and he'll drop the title at the end of the month, but I always like it when wrestlers develop, especially at this stage of their careers.
