Hardys were always regarded as masters of ladders because high flying but e&c generally won those matches minus the TIT. Yet despite singles runs they never ventured too far away from being a tag team. Sort of a middle ground versus the 3 way feud. Dudleys mostly never weren't tag guys and edge and Christian pretty much never went back and had tag runs with other guys.
As fun as ec were, when it came to moves most kids were about them.

Gonna fill in the rest of my list that is very obviously teams that didn't make the top 6 because my job for today got canceled and I'm beyond bored right now.
Kind of surprised at a couple of these not making the overall list, but hey. Really can't go wrong with the shear number of great tag teams we've had over the years.

6. The Hardy Boyz- 146.65 pointsThe Hardyz really benefited from my criteria and I was quite surprised they ended up being my highest rated WWE oriented tag team (spoiler alert!) They were by far the most over of the triad of the late 90's early 2000's and were the human highlight film in those matches. I first remember paying attention to them in the Apter mags in the mid 90's as Surge (Matt) and Will O The Wisp (Jeff) and more or less followed their career right through the brilliant Broken period in TNA, just great stuff so full marks for longevity as well. Baker put it best as they were the bridge from the teenybopper babyface teams of the 80's to the modern day flippitity flip stuff. 1. LOD 2. Dudleys 3. Harts 4. Mx 5. R n' R 6. Fruitbirds ( tm Ric Flair)

My initial reaction to seeing the Hardys ranked this high was to cringe, but when I took a second look they were one of the teams that ended the Dark Ages of tag team wrestling. They also fit perfectly together, Matt provided the structure while Jeff provided the thrills.
They still shouldn't be above the Steiners though. The Steiners are a Mt.Rushmore team IMO.

I'll never in my life get the RNR Express love , they look like walking restraining orders. The idea that they ever personified sex appeal - even in the south blows my mind. Aside from that they are fairly boring to go back and watch , at least to me and I just can't get invested in them. Watching them in the matches against Midnight Express - it's so much easier to root for the bad guys.
I respect them enough to place them high on my list (#11) but bias pushed them down. I can't completely ignore just how over they were and the innovation they brought to tag team wrestling but I can't just completely ignore that they also can't live within 100 yards of a school either.

Just felt proper to list the Midnight Express with RNR with them being back to back on the list.
I much prefer the Midnight Express. I'm not going to pretend to have watched every one of their matches , especially from the different iterations but the dozen or so I've seen all or part of - including a few against RNR they were easily the more entertaining team. Didn't hurt to have Corny either. Definitely a team I wouldn't mind doing more of a deep dive into some day. I do wish they would have had a presence in the WWF before that abomination of an attempt to recreate them with Holly and Gunn.

For me The Rock n Roll Express are the single most overrated tag team of all-time. IMO UT ranking them #11 is very generous. They were good at ONE thing and that was Ricky Morton's ability to sell an ass-kicking, arguably the greatest seller of all-time. Their offense was laughable and their double teams were pedestrian at best. Robert Gibson was also the very definition of dead weight a trained ape could have performed his role on the team. And I had to restrain myself from laughing my ass off every time they finished a match with the double drop kick. All that being said though they were one of the most over Babyface teams of all-time. I guess there is no accounting for taste. The Midnight Express on the other hand absolutely deserve their ranking on this list, especially the Eaton/Lane (Dennis Condrey on the other hand was about as useless as Robert Gibson). Eaton/Lane IMO are a clear Mt. Rushmore team with little to no weaknesses. They were excellent technically, could brawl with the best of them, were great high flyers had awesome double teams and could work face or heel. About their only downside was that Bobby Eaton looked like a representative from the local plumbers union
For those curious my Mt Rushmore of tag teams are The Road Warriors, Steiners, Hart Foundation, and Midnight Express.

5. The Rock N' Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson)- 147.5 points
The Rock N' Roll scored high with me due to their longevity (40 years as a team, crazy) and being right up there with Dusty and Magnum TA for being over with the crowds. Ricky was indeed the heart of the team as the nominal face and peril, perhaps that best ever in that role. Robert had good fire on the hot tags and I dunno, their double teams were effective to me for the most part. They had long running feuds with the Midnights and the Horsemen and set attendance records during both of those feuds so they were a big draw in the south. I believe they also held the NWA tag team titles more than any other team in the 80's which is a feather in their cap. They even had a cup of coffee in New Generation WWF and had a cameo in TNA during the Broken Matt Hardy era. You can't argue with success and longevity even though their in rings skills may seem dated to some.
3. The Midnight Express (Randy Rose, Norvell Austin, Dennis Condrey, Bobby Eaton, Stan Lane)- 154.7 points
I was really pushing to lump the Midnight variations as one to really boost their ranking and give them their proper due. One of the most exciting teams of the era with their innovative offense they needed someone like Dennis Condrey and Jim Cornette to keep them in line as heels. Dennis was a great chicken shit heel who always gets slept on when talking about the history of the Mx, I'll always have his back. Plus Dennis was an excellent bumper and could make anyone's (especially LOD's) offense look like death. I don't have any experience with the real early versions besides Condrey and Rose's comeback in 1988 NWA but they were pretty easy to hate when they came in with Paul E Dangerously in their corner. Stan Lane for the most part was an upgrade in ring despite his whimpy attempts at martial arts. He and Bobby had real special chemistry and were masters at cutting the ring in half and manipulating the ref to their advantage. It all comes back to Bobby Eaton though who was the glue that held them together. Still my favorite puncher he was an incredible athlete despite his dumpy physique. He made it look effortless whether executing an Alabama Jam or the Vegematic. Still my favorite feud was with the Fantastics I could watch those matches all day and not get bored, just so high paced and crisp. At the end of the day The Midnights are the finest heel team I've ever seen, they had the flashy offense but could still draw heat from the crowd, they were geniuses.
Oh yes, can't forget that theme, also an all time great. I really like this punchier version best:

For the record— 7 .) The Midnight Express 8 .) The Rock 'n' Roll Express Baker-man convinced me MX deserved the nod just over RnRx by convincing me double-teams should and are henceforth just called midnight expresses instead of double-teams. If that's not an influential legacy alone, I don't know what is. RnRx got some extra love from me for being surprisingly entertaining when I was into #NWAPowerrr. But count me with iron maiden or whoever it was that is absolutely floored by the notion that these dudes had any sort of sex appeal. Regardless of how deep into the South they forayed.

3. Rock & Roll Express- I'd drop them 2 spots if I had to do it over again, but no way I could keep them out of the Top 5. I actually do get where a lot of you are coming from though. It wasn't until the 2000s that I understood their appeal. They weren't cool like the Midnights. They didn't have the athleticism and slick double teams of the Rockers. I too always found it funny that they were considered heartthrobs. Only thing funnier was their lame double dropkick finisher. And every few years in the 90s they'd pop up in WWF or WCW being more and more dated with each appearance. For the longest time I thought they were among the most overrated so-called legends. But one day (pretty sure while watching SMW) I finally got their appeal. I had misunderstood them all those years. Their appeal was never in being flashy move guys with great timing like the Rockers or Midnights. They (or at least Ricky Morton) were more like a Mikey Whipwreck or even Rocky Balboa- the undersized everymen who would never say die. The Rock & Rolls were all heart. I'd categorize them more as undersized brawlers than anything else. Being at a size disadvantage made them perpetual underdogs. Women loved them and a lot of those Southern men they wrestled in front of could relate to them. But all that is really irrelevant since personal fandom shouldn't come into play in this. They score high in all the important metrics- championships won, longevity, memorable feuds/angles/matches, drawing power, etc. Plus their feud with the next team I'm going to write about defined tag team wrestling for a generation. ======================== 2. Midnight Express- Forever #1 in my heart. Yet my head wimped out and went with the consensus choice. Drew lots of money. Were even over enough to main event on occasion. Their aforementioned feud with the Rock & Rolls wrote the book on tag team wrestling while popping two territories. Won a lot of championships. As a kid I always thought it was weird that NWA had two sets of tag team titles, but the MX were forever holding the US Tag Titles. Also won the NWA Tag Titles on two occasions. Excelled in squashes while being equally great in star vs. star matches. Were extremely well rounded. Could wrestle or brawl equally well. Could also be comedic, vicious, or the best move guys in the business. Had impeccable timing. Had numerous great feuds. Also had swagger and a 'cool' factor. Especially once Sweet Stan replaced Dennis. Their great theme which Shootist shared also added to that cool factor. As did their 'x' taunt. Cornette was the perfect manager for them. Corny/MX is in the running for GOAT manager/wrestler pairing. Speaking of GOAT, I consider the Midnight Express' 1988 the greatest year a tag team ever had. Were so good at double teams that I called them Midnight Expresses and got it to stick in my neighborhood (and with 🤯 ). Beautiful Bobby was one of the best in the world while the Midnights were a thing. I've also watched a ton of the Midnight Express over the years. Their was a time during my mid 90s tape rental binge when rentals were based on whether or not the tape had Ric Flair and the Midnight Express. A few years later I got multiple Best of the Midnight Express comp tapes. Seeing the band back together at ROH Midnight Express Reunion is one of my Top 5 favorite live show moments. I've rambled on enough about my love for the Midnights over the years so I'll stop now, but just know I could go on and on and on...

The Hart Foundation is either my 1a or 1b favorite of all time and ended up at #2 on my greatest list as well. The aesthetic was great and the pink and black felt so unique for the time but even as a youngster the thing that made them stand out to me was just how perfectly Anvil and Hitman complimented each other juxtaposed to so many other teams of the era. From their look and build to their styles they just melded together as the perfect type of team that could match up against anyone. Anvil was the anvil , the battering ram powerhouse to allow them to stand toe to toe with the likes of Demolition or the Nasty's and Hitman was the agile technical guy that could really lay waste to the Rockers and Strike Forces of the era. This also allowed them to have great matchups with anyone - there wasn't an instance where you ever had to worry about their style clashing with someone.
They also worked as heels and faces. The fact that Jimmy Hart was their manager being of no relation looking back... was pretty damn cool and he added the mouthpiece this team so desperately needed when first coming into their own. Granted I think both grew on the mic as it went along and Anvil was the fun as the maniacal off the handle talker as faces too after he got a little more comfortable. He was such a nice juxtaposition all around to Bret who was more the laid back cool guy personality wise.
I mean even before Bret was a big singles star and certainly before he was a World Title guy he was my favorite wrestler and first action figure I owned and that was 99% because of Hart Foundation. In an era of a bunch of great teams of all shapes and sizes , looks , abilities I think The Hart Foundation was the perfect center piece to really legitimize that era and especially so in the ring.
#4 is too low. Shame at least two of the teams to come are ahead of them.

Might be mixing me up with HardyGirl who I am friends with off the board.
Hart Foundation #4? Madness! The Top 3 better be awesome. I'm guessing Dudleys, Road Warriors/LOD & Freebirds.
Hart Foundation is both my dad and I's #1. While my dad loved him some Jim 'the anvil', I was a staunch Bret fan. I grew up watching The Harts and Stampede Rasslin', Jim and Bret with Jimmy Hart were a match made in heaven. I would have been about 9-10 when they debuted and I loved them. Great feuds with The Rockers, Demoliton, Buklldogs, etc.

9. The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart)- 143.75 points
The Hart Foundation are locked in as a top 5 favorite team but their lack of kayfabe success and longevity dropped them a few spots when it came to my greatest list. Kid me though hated them at first mostly because of Jimmy Hart and their later affiliation with the Honky Tonk Man. Bret's Wrestlemania IV face turn is quite overlooked with the whole trophy incident with Bad News Brown. They were instant favorites and I had Bret ear marked for singles success. His look with the glasses and impeccable in ring worked made it inevitable to me that he would make hay in singles. UT nailed it with the big guy/little guy dynamic which made them taylor made for any team. They just made that golden era of WWF tag teams so much better, not much more to add.
I can't believe the Freebirds got this high up, or maybe I was their only vote.

Shootist ranking The Hart Foundation that low is the biggest surprise of countdown for me
The Hart Foundation would have been my #4 team, the last spot on my Mt Rushmore. Normally pink would not be the most masculine color, but The Hart Foundation's pink and black color were so badass. They also fit together perfectly in the ring with Bret being the technical master and The Anvil being the bruiser of the team. Their Hart Attack finisher was simple, elegant and effective, one of my top 5 favorites. Anvil was also an awesome talker and Bret grew comfortable with the mic as well. Just a great great team that I loved watching any time.
