Heard it is simply fire in many places as the hot sexy summer is simply too much for people to handle.
Good to see our push towards global warming is paying off!
Amazing to see yet another hundred year event too. Almost like these are appearing with regularity now.

As an Aussie it is bemusing to see people complain about a heatwave when the temp is over 27c three days in a row.
But UK is experiencing a Melbourne like heatwave right now. All that pasty skin, it's a recipe for a disaster.

When it hits 45+ for a week, call me.
I will admit, it's a weird different kind of heat in the UK and Europe. It was 25+ for a day or so, last time I was there and it felt 10 degrees hotter.
It's the apparent peak of winter here in Oz, and it's never felt milder. Summer wasn't nearly as hot as previous years too. Something is definitely happening.

Most Europeans in the danger zones do not own an air conditioner. And their houses are designed to retain heat. That is the problem. People end up flash dehydrating and getting heat stroke in own their houses.

Even in places that are used to extreme heat there are deaths. When I lived in Phoenix old people dropped like flies during the summer.

Expected death tally is expected to be in mid to high thousands. Already about a 1000 dead from the heat.

The moral to the story is that Climate Change is real so buy an airconditioner and run it at maximum, even when you are not home. 😎
I ripped out the evaporative cooling at our house and installed ducted air conditioning upstairs, best money I ever spent.

Worst heat wave in 200 years in Europe and France, Spain and Greece are literally on fire, but hey, surely this is no big deal. I mean, people who do not live in Europe will surely be fine, so who cares about those stuck there?

It's the worst heat wave in 200 years, unless you count the 2003 heat wave that was the worst in 400 years. But of course, the 2006 one was as hot if not worse than the 2003 one. Or the 2018 or 2019 heat waves that recorded record-breaking temperatures.
So... look, it's the same hyperbolics here in Oz. Every day that it's hot, it's " record breaking " - the data comes from a temperature gauge sitting in the middle of a concrete airfield in Broken Hill - which is Mad Max country, while the Eastern and Southern coasts are 15 degrees cooler.

Gatekeeping heat waves is super cool. "it's always been this hot!"/"there was floods in the bible!" is such a classic boomer take. The two most recently posted threads in OT are 'wave related' and have the exact same Incy & Nath (the new Bushwhackers) telling C he's overreacting conversation. It's so tiresome!

London expected to hit 41c, which will make it the hottest day for the UK, but still not good enough for a thread in OT. Current high temp is 38.7c.
UK issued a state of emergency due to the heat, but I clearly am overreacting making a thread about it.

A region of the world that barely knows what summer is is about to break their heat record by almost 3 degrees. Why does that matter? Crank up the AC and stop being a bitch!!! Oh wait, most places there don’t have AC because it isn’t needed? And a lot of the old buildings are not climatized for heat waves and will turn into furnaces? And said people who have lived there most of their lives aren’t climatized either and will die a horrible death? FAKE NEWS! It was 50 degrees where I live yesterday and I’m fine!

What a smug reply, seriously maybe stop sipping your own sanctimonious bathwater, people are allowed to disagree. Not sure where the forum guidlines said please form a circle and give a handjob to the person on the right. I for the record believe that Climate change is 100% real, I was joking about the Poms melting in the sun. I get that viruses are real, I haven't slept more than 4hrs in 6 of the last 8 days because my girls are sick. It doesn't mean that me wearing a pointless face covering to Woolies is going to make it all go away... Seriously, what a shitty tone to take...

Look, a majority of it is a response to some of the baseless, completely made up dribble and distortions of reality that c posts regularly. The man name dropped RSV today, claiming a rise in cases. Despite, it being as common as the cold and there being absolutely no evidence and/or the news media reporting it to suggest any concern. And this is just the most recent example of his absolute crap that falls through his keyboard that couldn't be any further than the truth. If we can't call each other on the bullshit, or challenge opinion - what good is any of this? PW may as well be a twitter account with the comments turned off if that is the case.

No, honestly, your just not worth responding to. Sorry, I do not need an iNCY we have at home. This is the problem. England is having the hottest summer on record, therefore global warming is real. Australia is experiencing it's coldest and wettest winter in 128 years therefore global warming is not real Climate and weather are not the same thing. I believe that climate change is real, but I do not believe we have the capacity to properly account for it. Our records on climate extend back to about 1880 that's nothing against a planet that is billions of years old. It is why pointing to climate change every time there is a freak weather event is not particularly useful. To tie together the two recent threads. I have never had less confidence in climate scientists than I do now. It is not the theory or the facts I take issue with, it is the models. During the Covid-19 there were endless models paraded through the media with doomsday scenario's and none of them turned out to be even relatively close to correct. All models work the same way, take historical data and extrapolate it forwards using the data you applied. The commonality between Covid-19 and climate change is there is no data from which to build a model. I am not saying this makes climate change wrong... But put the models away and talk about what we can know, or make it clear that your model is an estimate, because the certainty of the data is never aired with the models. All we do is give the detractors a field day: cei.org/blog/wrong-again-50-years-of-failed-eco-pocalyptic-predictions/

The jetstreams are destabilizing. The Northern was is utterly fucked because the Arctic melted. Yours is more stable for now, but Antartica is also melting. No clue what happens when the Southern destabilizes one since all my meteorology is in the northern hemisphere, but the Northern jetstream since the Artic melted has had larger oscillations. When it does a large vertical wave we get extreme cold events. Large horizontal wave, heat domes. Also the oscillations have speed up, which brews hurricanes and cyclones.
In the southern hemisphere you all are a lot more stable for now, as the antarctic is a fucking rock to the southern jetstream.
Which brings me to point two. In my lifetime people warned that the arctic circle could melt. When I studied meteorology for my science progression in college it was considered a worst case scenario in 2000 that it would melt by 2050. Well, it already melted a few years back.
Finally most climate science people read is third hand accounts. I assume no one here is reading through the Journal of Climate or Climate Change or Climate Dynamics. Nor is anyone into the academic blog sphere. So you are relying on lay interpretations of climate science. The "science" is whatever study the news decides to focus on and they treat it as the consensus. Generally consensus articles are extremely boring and not reported on though. They are literature reviews. I do not think I ever seen a single one reported on and I am wired hardcore into news for my soap operas.
As for the models, both for COVID and the climate there have been extremely accurate models and most ensembles have been deadly accurate. They do not give a fuck about the media reporting and simply report bands of expected values. Models predicted a million dead of COVID in the US by 2022 without a change in behavior, everyone said no way that could ever happen, and here we are, a million dead by 2022. Climate change models said the earth would warn x degrees, which would rise the oceans by x centimeters, and both happened within parameters of the models.
But no one reading about the actual models, they read third hand accounts of the models by people who report them like I politics here. Everyone knows I am shit posting though. Yet you all read the media version of my Cspam thread as absolute unbiased scientific fact, then say the science was wrong. No the science was not wrong, one article may have been wrong, but more likely, it was the person with no science background reporting on a university press release of a study that was dumbed down so news reporters could understand it, and sensationalized to get it reported on to bring publicity to the university. This is why cancer has been cured dozens of times, but no research articles ever proposed a cure for cancer.
Also all statistical models are estimates. Regression is used for estimation. Certainty of models is always given as well for respected journals. Again, journalists reporting on the press release will not give this information, but all models should have confidence intervals. And commonly these days, the data is available with the studies now so you can recreate it.

Many of those "failed" climate theories were real. Famine killed millions in Africa. Acid Rain was nasty shit that we dealt with growing up in the US. If your clothes were wet after an acid rain storm shit would eat through them. Dead lakes were also a thing. Not sure you all realize how BAD smog was in the cities here.
Snowfall too is changing. Even in my lifetime, there is far less snow in New England. Rare now when we get several feet of snow which was pretty common before the mid 90's.
Arctic melted enough for shipping lines to be established so wrong there.
And frankly, 2/3rds of the articles were by quacks or scientists that do not work in climate sciences. But this is the standard that people use for their scientific knowledge of this shit. Headlines from the Guardian or Times.
Also seems to forget that worldwide we did not stop using many toxic chemicals and moved to cleaner energy production over time. Even coal is far cleaner than what it was in 1970 when all those articles are from.
My favorite part. The letter to the president. 42 people attended a conference, but only two of them would support the statement they sent to the president. Clearly proof climate change is wrong. When we wrote to Obama about firing Bush's media advisement team, we had 300+ signees. That is consensus. Not 4% of a conference.
Finally getting climate information from economic groups is like getting sugar information from children. You simply will find information that you agree with, but it will not be factual and just be whatever an outsider to climate science research can find to support their views pieced together that almost certainly ignores existing consensus. Want to prove the current paradigm wrong you falsify it, not ignore the data and present quacks with shit quality alternative models.

I'm in North England and we're going to hit between 35-40 over the next couple of days. South England will go over 40. I've been to Florida in summer and Mexico and I don't think it ever reached 40 when I was there.
As people have said, we're not equipped to deal with this level of heat, so it's tough. They are saying don't take the trains because the tracks could be melting and engineers don't know exactly how to handle it.
Seems to die down on Wednesday fortunately, at least here.

The train network here is absolutely useless in this heat.
It normally takes me about 20 minutes to get home on the train - but between broken down trains, signal failures and staff illness meant I was standing there on the platform for over an hour, feeling like I was getting cooked (which I really struggle with physically and mentally TBH).
In all the time I was there, a single train went past and it was absolutely PACKED - like to a ridiculous level I've never seen a train at that time (it was 1pm, so not even a busy time).
I finally decided to get an Uber and got home (nice and cool) about 25 minutes later. I should have just done that right away.
If I'd died in the heat at that station, I wouldn't be able to make stupid wrestling posts on here!

Sorry to hear about that, @aaron. I need to get the train to get to work. Needless to say I'm not going in until service is resumed.
Fortunately my work is pretty laidback about working from home. They encourage people to come in Tue-Thur but people can stay at home with any flimsy excuse, so it's not a problem. Obviously my excuse is not at all flimsy. It's a shame because the office has much better air conditioning than what I can manufacture here with an assortment of fans.
