- His push was all for a match with Austin - Got shoe-horned out of the win, but crippled Austin - Ran his ass over AFTER getting a rare pinfall victory over him. - BEST FINANCIAL YEAR EVER - Austin comes back during MY MATCH and he's fat rofl - Feuds with me but "kills" me... no contest smh didn't even pin me - 2/3 Falls. He gets the first fall which is like always quick so DOESN'T COUNT - He beat me in wrestling I beat him in a FIGHT - Then I fell on top of him. That's your Royal Rumble Mania Main Eventer right there, lost to me. AGAIN. - 2001 on all cylinders and then I go down. Austin gotta run with it brah - Business starts going down - I come back and it's a U2 song - Win the Rumble and face the winner while you midcarding with Scott Hall LMAO - You retired like a bitch, never got any of your wins back AND I'm pretty much better than you. Least I wasn't scared to face HOLLYWOOD HULK HOGAN. And stop blaming Jesse Ventura we KNOW you play politics on me in 99 you fucking bitch.
- HHH, probably
No but for real Austin def. padded out his early resume. Is 99 a bad rewatch? That was like when I was first becoming a real fan. So HHH's rise along with Corporate Rock was my first glimpse into a star making process. Also my first real PPV was Deadly Games. Ended on the first screwjob reenactment... but I've been watching for weeks to months, TOTALLY LOST ON ME. I just assumed it was normal corporate evilness. I guess that's where it started but it made no sense to me at the time. Wut happened?
Did Austin ever get anything on Trips except the forklift?
Also if it wasn't Ventura and really politics, isn't putting Austin on the shelf for a while in kayfabe > random ass pinfall anyway?

I wonder if Austin's long game plan was to kibosh the Two Man Power Trip split/HHH face turn and push by not reconnecting with a returning HHH... And then HHH just won anyway by proving he didn't need to return to/restart a program with Austin to warrant the WrestleMania main event title match?
In all reality, I always kinda got the sense that Austin actually respected and even liked HHH as a worker. Just as much, if not maybe even more so, than Rock? They had that WCW overlap where they probably bonded a bit as young lions who could actually go. Then Austin always struck me as this rare entity that got on just as well with the Stampede faction as he did with the Kliqsters. Like similar to Taker? So, aside from his own politicking for himself, I'm not really sure he ever had an axe to grind against HHH.

The story around SummerSlam 99 is that Austin had minor ACL and PCL tears in his left knee and a major PCL tear in his right knee and could barely perform. Austin was kept off the road entirely leading up to the match and they needed an extra body at SummerSlam. So they went with Mankind and since Austin didn't want to work Jarrett at Unforgiven and No Mercy. Austin thought it made more sense for Hunter to pin Mankind and to have him chase after HHH for the belt he never lost. However since this was being reported across the sheets, the WWF decided to work everyone and change the finish at the last second.
It seemed like they were setting up for HHH-Austin @ WM18 but then creative in 2001 was all over the place somehow Jericho got a title push out of nowhere.
