First I will say I am against them. But how long do you think it too long for a champion to be away? So far everyone who won one Sammy and Mox won the unification match so their reign counted. But what happens if you don't say Toni loses to Thunder Rosa when she returned then none of Toni reign is just wiped.
If the champion is going to be gone for a while just crown a new champion and give them a title shot when they get back. The same thing will happen the Interim except no matter what the champion who is there reign still matters.
If the champion is going to be gone less then a month then don't do anything. It isn't like the show doesn't have enough titles to cycle while one is away.

30 day rule did not work when the internet started and fans kept track of how many times it was violated.

Just vacate the belt.
Take a look at Punk, he's held the AEW Championship a combined 90 days, and he's been injured for almost all of it.
Unlike say, UFC.. there's no point holding the belt at home. There's no loss, it ain't real. The title is a prop, a vehicle for storyline.
Sure, the interim title takes the original belts place, but the same outcome can be achieved with the former champion challenging the new challenge when the injured worker returns.
It just creates ugly record keeping and confusing plot lines to casual viewers.

I prefer this over AEW ripping off WWE carte blanche with the Casino Cash-In Chip but it just doesn't work.
You're just making the match unnecessarily less appealing by making it for an interim title. It actually doesn't do anything for the main title either, that's on the sidelines while you're building up a title that's just going to disappear.
It was silly when they did it with Cody, but it just seemed like a round-a-bout way to justify the ladder match. Everything with Moxley & Storm really hasn't served AEW well.

I.T. are worthless considering the rematch is already baked-in into the storyline.

I would say this: it would matter more if the interim champion was in any danger of actually losing the title. So far AEW's interim championships are treated the same way as the FTW championship. Nobody outside of Team Taz is ever going to win that title, so nobody cares when it is defended.
Same goes for the interim championships. Someone who is already in the title picture or already the #1 contender wins the interim championship, then holds it until the real champ returns and they have a match. Why should anyone care about it? If the title already feels meaningless anyway, why not give someone that might never otherwise become the real champion in that division a run with the interim title?
It's Halloween. Have a surprise return by Abadon where she completely fucks up Toni Storm and takes the title back to her lair or wherever she's from. Do a storyline where Serena Deeb steals the title and refuses to defend it because she doesn't think anyone else is worthy. Put it on a lower card face like Ruby Soho (if she's healthy) and do open challenges every week, or she takes it to Dark and starts giving all the women stuck there a shot at glory. Have Jade Cargill send one of her Baddies to win it so she can walk around and say the TBS title is the REAL championship here. Put it on Sonny Kiss and let whatever faction she's in protect her as a cowardly heel. Give one of the Japanese women you refuse to push a moment in the sun. Willow Nightingale was about to become All Elite anyway, have her ask to sign, get denied because she’s “not ready”, then enter and win a tournament for the title that forces Tony to sign her.
There's a million ways they can make the title at least feel interesting in the real champ's absence, but they don't. They just stick it on whoever is next in line and wait. It's fucking pointless.

Willow is already all elite. And never thought of that way but interim is pretty much a number 1 contender title which means nothing until you beat the champion.

what ever happened to the 30 day rule? Brock happened to it. It is a good rule but it is only followed when it suits people.

It'll be interesting when a person holding an interim championship gets injured, and then Tony decides to do an interim interim champion. And the that guy will face the interim champion to determine who becomes the interim champion to face the actual champion.
It'll be like MLB's multi-game tiebreakers to determine who goes to the post season.😂

Its not rocket science. If someone is going to be out an extended period of time just have them relinquish the title, crown a new champion, and move on. When the former champion comes back deal with it then. Put them in the title picture or a different story. Whatever works best at the time.

If there has been another Marvel film released since the last one when you were champion you have to vacate the belt.
Interim titles are pointless in a worked sport.

It’s also exposed how poorly AEW books any champion not named Jon Moxley. Not only do they not know what to do with people after they win a title, if that person gets hurt they don’t even try to rebook anything they just say “here you go,” and stall until the champ comes back.
Have some fun with it or something geez
