It's Week 14 already - time flies! After a mixed start to the season marked with a lot of mediocrity I thought things really kicked up a gear last week, and we now have a larger group of "good" teams with Dallas and Cincinnati surging, while a couple of teams currently on the outside of the playoff picture, Detroit and Las Vegas, have found form to make the wild card race exciting down the stretch.
The aforementioned Raiders have no room for error when they play tonight at SoFi against the Rams, currently sitting in 10th place in the AFC despite 3 straight wins. A big reason for the turnaround has been Davante Adams returning to his all world form. Since going 1/3 in the embarrassing shutout loss to the Saints, Adams has been on fire with 7 touchdowns in 5 games, averaging over 130 yards per game. The Rams have had a disastrous season, but they have added some spice to this game by claiming Baker Mayfield who we might apparently see play just a couple of days after joining the team.
If my maths are correct there are 7 in-division games on Sunday, with the most important taking place in the AFC West. Buffalo has regained the #1 seed on the back of a 3 game win streak despite not playing their absolute best ball. They do have the advantage of the mini bye ahead of what promises to be a tough game, but were dealt the bad news of losing Von Miller for the season. The Jets lost a winnable game to the Vikings last week, but got a another great performance from Garrett Wilson who went 8/162 and seems to have a clear connection with Mike White.
All eyes in the late window will be on Brock Purdy making his first start for the 49ers. Against the Dolphins, Purdy looked very Jimmy G esque and not at all out of his depth. The second game is always much tougher for young QBs thrust into action though, but the situation still bodes well he just has to get the ball to in his playmakers' hands and avoid making mistakes. Despite another iconic Tom Brady comeback, the Bucs are not threatening anyone, and the last thing a struggling offence wants to face is a juggernaut like the San Francisco defence. This looks like a game you definitely want to take the under on.
SNF shapes to be a referendum game on the Dolphins and Chargers. Miami took a heavy loss to the 49ers in a game that presented as their chance to prove themselves as a true contender, but signs point to a rebound given that prior to the two interceptions he threw, Tua hadn't turned the ball over since his return from concussion. LAC need to win this one to stay afloat having lost 3 of their past 4 games. They have the advantage of a relatively easy run home, but they have the feeling of a boat with a puncture that is just taking on a little bit more water than they are able to bail out.
