Over on Peacock they had a recent doco where all the wrestlers past and present gushed about some of their favourite games. The games they covered included Pro Wrestling for NES, RAW, Wrestlemania The Arcade, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, WWE 2K14, SmackDown Here Comes The Pain, Saturday Night Slammasters, Attitude and No Mercy.
It's a really fun doc with a lot of the UpUpDownDown guys taking centre stage. The highlight for me was hearing Bret talk about his experience working on Wrestlemania The Arcade Game. If you haven't seen it, there's a Mockumentary style video of Bret working on the game and it's actually really well done. "You're derefencing a nullpointer, open your eyes!' always comes to mind when I have to fix a gadget. Also before they go into a few games they do a big honorable mentions at the start of the game where the talent got an opportunity to talk up their favourites and after all these years AJ Styles is still going into bat for Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 which again is a shout out to an old documentary where he just gushes about that game.
I think when it comes to wrestling games it usually comes down to NM or HCTP so it was nice to hear them talk about other games. Of all the choices, Attitude stuck out as the strangest entry and it seemed to be on there because Greg Miller (of Kinda Funny fame) was a fan. They seemed to be poking fun of it more than anything else with the difficult controls but argued that for it's time it was a graphical masterpiece.
If you're familiar with the games you're not going to learn anything new. In fact I found I had to check my 'um, actually' at the door, especially when they'd go on about features that had been introduced in earlier entries. For instance No Mercy with CAW (Wrestlemania 2000) or backstage arenas in HCTP (at least since KYR and arguably SYM had better arenas). Still, for a WWE licensed doco, it was a treat to see the talent talk about how much these games meant to them and celebrate them.
We've spoken about wrestling games in the past but I thought it's worth a re-do.

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played?
WWF Smackdown! Good game, saw a challenge in a magazine to try and beat the rumble with a CAW and I could never do it.
2) Was their one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling?
No. I was already a huge fan by the time I got into the games.
3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop?
Yes I bought every WWE (& CoD) as an annual tradition once I moved out of home. Though the day 2K20 came out I had to run some errands before I bought it and I saw all the negative reviews on Twitter so I skipped it.
4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut?
Me 😒
5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks?
Legends of Wrestling, I played the life of that when it came out and very rarely see it get mentioned.
6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it?
WWF Smackdown 2 but without loading times that take forever

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played?
WWF Warzone. Impossible to play beyond an amateur Mortal Kombat level, but mind-blowing nonetheless. Loved the sound bites when selecting wrestlers or getting challenged to grudge matches. Also, the introduction to CAWs... Might've been more responsible for more of my middle school erections than Pamela Anderson's plastic hoots.
/////-////-///-//-/
2) Was their one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling?
WWF Warzone really planted the seed to really get me into pro wrestling. WWF Attitude expanded the love just by boasting an expanded roster. The pivot to the controls of WrestleMania 2000 took a similar adjustment as shifting from an automatic transmission to a manual... But once adjusted, you'll never love an automatic like you'll love a manual. Then No Mercy combined the gameplay familiarity of WrestleMania 2000 with perfection of all other elements, and had me consequently rabidly in love with pro wrestling. I could book PPVs to tweak or correct real life results or storyline directions that I wasn't as pleased with.
/////-////-///-//-/
3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop?
No, and no. Hate every wrestling game that's ever followed No Mercy. Hate any and every game that follows a yearly release model. Fuck 'em all!*
(*Had N64 & THQ/AKI remained "a thing" and started to release yearly, I would've bought every single cartridge.)
/////-////-///-//-/
4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut?
Sid in an THQ/AKI game.
Hate that Big Show didn't make the No Mercy cut, but mostly just for OCD perfection reasons.
/////-////-///-//-/
5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks?
Not sure I understand this question, so/but...
Virtual Pro Wrestling & VPW2 are the games I went through the most trouble to get my hands on and play on actual console.
Fire Pro Wrestling (played on PS4) is the most overhyped game I've ever bothered to finally play.
/////-////-///-//-/
6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it?
Remake No Mercy and do the following things in rough order of preference: - Expand CAW option selections and editing abilities also allowing for import of textures/features/animations/etc. from other THQ/AKI wrestling games. Also expand CAW for female wrestlers. (Maybe include a nudity option... -_-) - Ability to edit movesets of existing wrestlers. - Increased number of wrestlers allowed in the ring at once, and also add a physical referee. Thinking max number excluding referee would be 8. N64 allows for four controllers, so this allows play parties where in theory buddies could play a four corner tag team match against each other or each have an opponent to square off against in a battle royal setting. - Create a storyline for season mode. - Hack the SmackDown Mall to allow for import of official new content. - Add HIAC as a gimmick match.

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played?So the game was WCW/nWo Revenge and it pre-dated my interest in Pro Wrestling. I just loved the introduction, namely the loose storyline of Sting getting caught between this war between nWo Hollywood and nWo Wolfpac working his way to Hogan by going through Bret and the Giant etc. I had this idea of Pro Wrestling and none of it was actually as cool as this Hogan/Sting storyline. Then the actual gameplay was fantastic, easy to pick-up and play controls, great animations and sound effects that made the moves feel impactful and the rock n roll presentation was great. Naturally I gravitated towards Goldberg right away but guys like Sting, Han Zo Man, Scott Hall, Rey Mysterio etc. stood out right away. 2) Was their (sic) one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling?Damn, basic English is failing me. I'd have to say it's SYM for the PS2. I was so disappointed with Just Bring It coming off Know Your Role so this felt like the PS2 release I'd been dying for. I just loved all the little details like being able to ride The Undertaker's bike around. Such a mechanic would never have crossed my mind playing the AKI games. The roster was first class, being able to play through full two years of season mode felt like a decent compromise between what we got in KYR and JBI and the game looked fantastic. Also it came out at a time where the industry was shifting so you really had to seek out who all the best wrestler's were which brought me to PW. I've said it before, but I credit c for inspiring me to make a Nick Mondo and building this hardcore division in my game. My enthusiasm of that game spilled into me finally picking up No Mercy. I used to be really particular about which games I bought and since I already owned one wrestling game in Revenge I saw No Mercy as double dipping. On top of that the game erasure glitch threw me and the AKI formula was beginning to feel dated. However by 2002 nothing had truly replaced the AKI games, so I made the impulse buy and for years No Mercy was the one game I'd keep going back to. Often you hear about fig feds etc. No Mercy was my outlet for something similar largely inspired off of websites like this: www.angelfire.com/wrestling2/nomercycaw/Last playthrough of No Mercy I was finally trying to complete all the belts and that's still an ongoing process. I've got way too much pride to do the J-O-B. 3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop?Yeah from KYR to SVR09. I wasn't a big fan of the modern product, but being able to play through the games just scratched that itch and usually gave me a new set of CAWs to play around with. Then both my modern consoles broke and that ended the pattern. Now it's a case by case basis. The last WWE game I bought was 2K19 which feels like a real end of an era game and Fire Pro Wrestling World which is the game I keep going back to. 4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut?
I was really bummed that Mordecai wasn't available in SVR. So much so, I didn't buy it until recently just to complete the PS2 era SmackDown collection. Jamie Noble not being playable in any SmackDown game also felt like a crime too considering he was one of the mainstays of the brand. That was one thing I disliked about legends being in the game, it took spots away from the more niche wrestlers. I don't want to play as Volkoff, give me Spanky! 5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks?So in other words 🤯 , underrated wrestling games. I feel like both Wrestlemania 2000 and SYM have been erased by their sequels despite having features that makes them stand out in their own way. Despite not being AKI games, Wrestlemania XIX/DOR games were really fun games as well with some of the best multi-player available. 6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it?No more pink trunks for HHH in HCTP! But I'd say the biggest problem with HCTP was stats. You couldn't use a CAW straight out of the gate and instead had to take them all through season mode. Doing it with 30 odd wrestlers wasn't feasible without a GameShark so either I'd remove it entirely or give you the option to edit each wrestler you saw fit. I'd love a more definitive roster too.

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played? -Pro Wrestling on the NES. Loved it!
2) Was there one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling? -Nah. Simply because it would be nearly impossible for me to be a bigger wrestling fan than I already was. A young Jim Cornette probably has me beat. That's about it. I will say the Smackdown series helped two of my friends get into wrestling though.
3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop? -Not really. I was usually a little behind the times. Last wrestling game I got was one of the Smackdowns back around 2003.
4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut? -Don't remember. I'm sure I could have given you a good answer 20 years ago though. By the time CAW came around it didn't really matter who was officially in the game anyway. I'd spend hours on CAWs.
6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it? -Again, I'm sure I had complaints, but I cannot remember what they would have been.
5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks? -Tecmo World Wrestling on the NES was a fun game that doesn't seem to get anywhere near the love Pro Wrestling gets. The beauty of Tecmo was it featured "commentary" scrolling across the bottom of the screen. This guy was a regular JR with some great lines like "a flesh and mat sandwich" or "it's doomsday for the skull." He called an abdominal stretch a "royal octopus" and introduced me to the Northern Right Suplex, which is what I called the move for a good 5 years. Yeah, I just accepted a suplex being named after a whale. TWW commentary just cracked me up. Plus the final boss was called The Earl of Doom. A name so badass I borrowed it for my basement wrestling figure leagues.
There was another fun game that came out around 98 or 99. This one was WWF licensed. Don't remember what it was called though. Don't think it was No Mercy. Anyway, this game was my introduction to CAW. That was THE great leap forward in wrestling games. The fulfillment of a dream my friends and I had for years. Again, I'd spend hours on CAWs to the point where it would annoy my cohorts who just wanted to smash some buttons.
7. What is your favorite wrestling game? -Surprisingly don't have one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Call it a tie between Pro Wrestling, that first CAW game I just mentioned (PI's Warzone, maybe?), and the early 2000s Smackdown series. Can never keep the SD games straight though. Just know I played and enjoyed a bunch of them.Â
8. Stuff about other games. -Tecmo, Steel Cage, and Royal Rumble were fun for their time. Just having the option to do Steel Cage & Rumble matches were another great leap forward. Plus they had themes! I'd spend a good 10 minutes scrolling through the names just to hear those glorious themes. Then there was the original WCW Wrestling on NES. Pretty sure this is an obscure one. Dr. Death & Eddie Gilbert were in it and the final boss was a thinly veiled version of Andre The Giant.
9. What is your least favorite wrestling game? -That dumb game where Vader turns into a bull. Hated this game so much. Don't remember the name, but it came out in 1996 when pro wrestling was going through a big boom period in my neighborhood. We were all so excited for a new WWF game. Then we got this rubbish trying to capitalize on the Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter fad which I was never all that crazy about to begin with. Plus I could already play those games if I wanted to. Why would I play a poor man's version of them? I just wanted to play an updated proper pro wrestling game! Hated this game so much (it's worth repeating). It had little to do with pro wrestling.

That was THE great leap forward in wrestling games. The fulfillment of a dream my friends and I had for years. Again, I'd spend hours on CAWs to the point where it would annoy my cohorts who just wanted to smash some buttons. WWF Warzone and I was surprised the doco didn't cover it. It was one of the most successful games of that era and CAW mode was a huge deal. I believe it was the first western game to have that feature (I believe one of Fire Pros may have beaten Iguana Entertainment to the punch) and it would go onto become a defining feature of the genre. In terms of presentation, it blew the AKI games out of the water. It had better character models, shockingly solid commentary, FMV, authentic music etc. There was nothing as impressive as Warzone at the time but Revenge would go onto have the bigger legacy thanks to the pick up and play nature as well as the 4 player battle royales. Then they over-promised and under-delivered with Attitude. It was meant to be an even bigger version of Warzone but really it was Warzone with a couple of extra modes and a new roster. In the same year Wrestlemania 2000 came out with it's own version of CAW and whatever appeal the Inguana games had went out the window. I never played anything after Attitude and really didn't master anything beyond the Lou Thesz Press. 9. What is your least favorite wrestling game?-That dumb game where Vader turns into a bull. Hated this game so much. Don't remember the name, but it came out in 1996 when pro wrestling was going through a big boom period in my neighborhood. WWF In Your House, the follow-up to Wrestlemania The Arcade. It was developed by the WarZone people who handled the console ports of Wrestlemania The Arcade and just like the follow-ups to WarZone, Iguana failed to really improve on what came before. The major gimmick of the game was that instead of fighting in an arena, you'd fight in the opposing wrestler's home. So Shawn Michaels would be at a rock n roll venue, HHH at a mansion, Goldust at a movie theatre etc. A fun concept but none of it was as atmospheric as Wrestlemania The Arcade and it seemed to affect the quality of the models. Despite being made purely for console and being the follow-up the game and all the animations looked worse. The kicker was that Jeff Jarrett was in the game but removed because of unfounded rumours emanating out of Baltimore that he'd be the third man.

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played?
It was alright. It was WCW/nWo Revenge. There were a LOT of wrestlers in it and I didn't have a clue who most of them were. I had a very limited knowledge of wrestling at the time. It was also UGLY.
2) Was there one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling?
Not really!
3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop?
Yeah, I bought pretty much every wrestling game (except the OG Xbox ones) since 2000. Every WWE, WCW and ECW game - and the TNA game too. I even played that rubbish Legends one. I used to get them on release day, but now I just wait about six weeks and get them super cheap.
4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut?
Riho and QT Marshall! I know that's two.
5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks?
No one ever mentions the two ECW games. They were pretty much just messy reskins of Attitude (they even had pieces of Attitude commentary left in) but still.
6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it?
I'd remake WCW Backstage Assault with modern graphics, full entrances and actual entrance music for EVERYONE (some people had random reused music and it sucked!)

Thanks for the info Pete. The kicker was that Jeff Jarrett was in the game but removed because of unfounded rumours emanating out of Baltimore that he'd be the third man. Aww nuts. Y'know that schoolmate of my friends who fed them all the inside scoopz has a lot to answer for. His name may have been Patrick? One of these days I'm gonna have to track that rascal down and scold him for all the trouble he caused with his fake news.

1) What was your impression of the first wrestling game you played?WWF Wrestlemania 2000 for the Game Boy Colour. The only place you see Jeff Jarrett squashing Kane. Just for you Baker ! The tacky music, the wrestler portraits, the rubbish sprites, the way the screen would awkwardly change when you left the ring, the over-sized ring, the beat-em-up emphasis on horizontal movement over vertical movement, the slow Irish Whips, the diminished move pool. It's a pretty basic wrestling game but I had a lot of fun with it. I particularly liked the sound effects of the moves. Strikes and slams all sounded pretty nasty. Professional wrestling in video game form = fun!
2) Was there one game that made you a bigger fan of Pro Wrestling?Nah, wrestling games were a side effect of my wrestling fandom. I am grateful for how many names of wrestling moves I learnt through playing the early Smackdown games. I'm pretty sure that's how your contemporary wrestling announcer memorised their move names too, and why guys like J.R. and Michael Cole had trouble keeping up. If I hadn't played any wrestling games I'd really struggle as well.
3) Did you buy wrestling games each year? Do you still buy the annual releases or did you stop?More or less. I owned Smackdown 2! Know Your Role, but for some reason missed out on Here Comes The Pain which is everyone's favourite. I think I had every Smackdown and Smackdown vs Raw game from then on up to around 2009. Then I gave it up, because I realised the games were carbon copies of each other with an increasing emphasis on reversals, to the point where matches against the hardest AI became tedious reversal fests.
4) What was one wrestler you wish you could have played as but they never made the cut?Considering I haven't played a wrestling game newer than Smackdown vs Raw 2009, everyone from the NJPW roster, Roman Reigns, Darby Allin, and a bunch of others.
5) What's one wrestling game you played that slips through the cracks?WWF Wrestlemania 2000 for the Game Boy Colour!!! This is the space I can use to talk about Fire Pro Wrestling. Maybe it's not slipped through the cracks because everyone knows what it is, and it has a fantastic reputation, but I'm not sure how many people here have actually played it. I have. It's a lot of fun. Has a similar aesthetic to WWF Wrestlemania 2000 but better in every way. A huge amount of moves. Great physics. Exceedingly customisable. Can run your own tournaments, leagues, and so on. Has a match rating system, and you can choose the type of style to try and have a great match in. It's a wrestling game suitable for the smarkiest smark but also one that more casual fans can enjoy. It doesn't use official wrestler names because of copyright reasons but has models of every top wrestler from all promotions USA and Japan and Mexico. Even MMA. I refer specifically to Fire Pro Wrestling for the Game Boy Advance, released in 2001, but I imagine the newer versions of the game are even better. The main flaw with the game from a mechanic standpoint is that dives and top rope moves are incredibly hard to execute. Your opponent has to be in the perfect position, if he moves an inch then your move misses. Particularly hard to execute moves on a standing opponent because you have to stun him. Unlike in the real world, professional wrestlers won't pretend to be stunned forever while you spend 2 minutes setting up your flippity dippity high spot, so they're really hard to execute. Arguably they should be, but it does take the fun out of doing it in a video game. The other flaw is that 2D sprite wrestling is just not as good as fighting with 3D animated characters. 6) If you could remake your favourite wrestling game, what's the one change you'd make to improve it?To be honest, I don't care enough about wrestling games to devote mental effor to this question.

WWF Wrestlemania 2000 for the Game Boy Colour. I loved it! Obviously it looks awful now, but I had loads of fun with it at the time. I thought the GBA games were really impressive. The entrance themes!

New question! 7. What's your favourite novelty wrestling game?I've played a couple of novelty wrestling games. I have faint but pleasant memories of a Playstation 2 game called Def Jam Vendetta. I don't know what Def Jam is and why he has such a Vendetta, but that's the name of the game. I recall fighting in a sort of underground warehouse with a handful of fans. Fight Club sorta atmosphere. Smooth gameplay. Not particularly sophisticated but certainly rivalled the WWE games at the time in terms of pure mechanics. Don't remember anything about the story. The other one is The Simpsons Wrestling, which System has masterfully brought back to life in Fan Fiction. It's exactly what you'd expect from a cartoon meets pro-wrestling crossover. I didn't spend too much time on the game, didn't hook me in the same way Def Jam Vendetta did. But not bad. Finally, I recall seeing trailers of another novelty wrestling game, maybe in the early 2010s? It was based on classic WWF wrestlers but had these outrageous animations with wrestlers jumping 50 feet in the air and they were all exaggerated like caricatures. Anyone remember the title of the game?

Smooth gameplay. Not particularly sophisticated but certainly rivalled the WWE games at the time in terms of pure mechanics. Don't remember anything about the story. Def Jam Vendetta is the spiritual successor of No Mercy and was developed by AKI. It was more strike-based than No Mercy with combinations but it re-used a lot of the same classic animations from those games. IIRC the main campaign is some revenge story where you're looking to get back at people who wronged you and they're all played by famous rappers like DMX. The sequel Fight For NY is considered even better and steps it up a notch with fatalities and more dangerous gimmick matches. This is more of it's own thing and they shy away further from the grappling mechanic but there's still some AKI wrestling poking through. The last wrestling game AKI would work on is Ultimate Muscle and since they never made their way to PAL regions I never played them. Zoinks McJinkies was a big fan though from memory. I had Simpsons Wrestling and for whatever reason Bumblebee Man sticks out to me either as my pick or my greatest opponent. It's considered one of the worst ever wrestling games but I don't know it entertained me in '02. WWE All-Stars is the game you're thinking of and it's supposedly the best WWE video game since No Mercy since it's so easy to pick up and play. I don't know, I never touched it and I thought the models looked ugly. Battlegrounds was supposed to be a spiritual successor but the loot crates and lack of gameplay really brought it down. I'm toying with my copy of Fire Pro Wrestling World as we speak. Updating the NXT/AEW rosters, updating entrance music and wrestler AI so they work their matches as close to their real life counter-parts. I largely just sim with a Word document to keep track of records since I'm a nerd. It also takes me back to Wrestlemania 2000 which is typically where my mind goes to what a wrestling card should look like. FYI, it was a nightmare during the pandemic when certain talent would be on a roll only for Vince to cut them. Gran Metalik and Jaxson Ryker never got to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

For them to take the rappers from the Def Jam record label and put them in a game was just genius.

I love that interference video. I dunno what it's trying to say (is it just damage?) but seeing Benoit just leave the ring on his own is just great. "Okay clearly this isn't going how I saw it. Dude kept punching me. Fuck this shit you're on your own Mankind."
And THAT is why Foley cost him the WWF title 2x in 2000.
FACTS.

I always thought interference was kept to a timer and after a minute or so they'd get bored. Never realised it was set to the amount of damage you do. Notice how once the bottom value drops to 248 Benoit promptly leaves the ring? Even just seeing the invisible health bar and how it works is interesting. The top is referring to Benoit's current health, which drops more radically but can be recovered the longer Benoit stays on his feet. While the bottom is permanent. I don't know about 🤯 , but this is all fascinating to me. We were talking about games we'd love to pull apart, the AKI games are at the top of that list. Speaking of... Better ask Wife to get you an Everdrive 64 for Christmas '23 🤯 ! Finally after 23 years, you can get your hands on Backlash and play it on your N64.

I'll never play this game the same way again.
I knew about The People's Elbow and had a suspicion about The Worm. I had no clue about the others.
