Horrible news. He was hilarious right until the end. Somewhere there is a pic of him holding me as a baby. True legend.

WORSE THAN MICHAEL JORDAN I MEAN JACKSON
Absolutely iconic shit. His stuff with Howard Stern where he would think he was interacting with Macho Man or Ultimate Warrior but it was an impersonation.
He will be breaking people's back old country way and putting em' in the Camel Clutch in heaven. RIP.

One of the greatest heels of all time, one of those 100% er's we were talking about in the history section. They don't make 'em like him anymore.
Make them all humble up there Sheik, RIP.

Probably not the time for this but whatever. I thought his crazy old man schtick was cringe. It was almost mildly amusing the first time you encountered it. Then it became progressively, well, more cringe with each played out highspot. And I happen to think it's a shame that's what most people remember him for.
I'll choose to remember his above average mustache, iconic sheik boots, rocking the rarely seen gut with abs look, and as the Master of the Gut Wrench Suplex. He drew nuclear heat in his heyday, served as the most important transitional champion in the history of the business as a bridge from old school Backlund to new school Hogan, and was a household name to 80s kids. I can tell you from first hand experience the Camel Clutch was right up there with the Boston Crab when it came to legit painful submissions. Then you have his legendary feud with Sgt. Slaughter. I've seen more than one old timer who watched wrestling longer than me, and more of it, claim the Slaughter/Sheik MSG Boot Camp Match as their all time favorite. Have to admit I was never a Sheik fan at any point in my life, but I can respect the guy as a performer. He also lived a very interesting life.
RIP Iron Sheik

This x1000, but I was a big Stern fan back in the day so I'm a bit guilty leaning into that gimmick. Also came to my attention that Hogan is last remaining original 5 LJN likeness alive. First saw the boot camp match around 15-20 years ago, Sheik paid the price and bled buckets, awesome match.

The last 15 years or so of Sheiky as the crazy ranting guy is both amazing that he was reinvented into somewhat relevancy, but also, I was always uncomfortable about who was really in control of that whole thing. Some degree of exploitation happening there, only a matter of how much, or how little. But, it's 2023 and the Iron Sheik passing away is much bigger news now than it probably would have been in, I don't know, the year 2000. And that's kinda beautiful.
It's really an amazing life. The (probable) political murder of Gholamreza Takhti being the last straw, inspiring Sheiky to flee Iran for America, ending up in Minnesota of all places, as a successful professional wrestler in the AWA, is like a weird 1970s Werner Herzog movie, or something. The bridge from Backlund to Hogan making him immortal in the little niche we care about. To somehow more known as an old man saying crazy shit because the internet is a celebration of the absurd. Crazy life.

Not my era but definitely an icon even in his later years via Twitter.
I did enjoy his appearance at the X7 Battle Royal and cheating Sarge out of the win.

I remember when he returned as Colonel Mustafa. After the face turn for Sarge he remained with Adnan putting talent over like Sid Justice, Tito Santana, Kerry von Erich and Tatanka before leaving again.
I remember him losing to Sid in like 30 sec on superstars. THey repackaged him like he was a new wrestler.
