A guy like Rey was just never meant to be a heel. He's not the rule because very few people can touch his career. He's in the conversation no matter how you feel about him personally. His is a special case. What about a guy like Steamboat who seemed to be a babyface "by default" in that it wasn't that he was a great babyface, but simply had no choice in the matter. Do you think being an eternal face but NOT reaching the highs of the great babyfaces of the industry holds you back as an all-around performer? Like if you can't play heel, but aren't the top of the food chain amongst babyfaces... isn't it worse than just being okay at both roles? Steamboat was basically HHH as a face when you think about it. Not great on his own, but thrives as the guy who works with THE GUY. Like we don't remember WM3 or Chitown Rumble as Steamboat's HITS so much as moments in his opponent's. I really feel like his lack of a heel resume hurts him in History. I mean other than an exceptional move (which isn't even a finisher) most people don't think of him at all...
And it goes both ways obviously. If you're a clown who can only get away with rinky dink basic ass heel midcard runs... you're the same. I'm not sure which "end" of wrestling this goes in, but PW what do you think? Outside of a guy like King Mystery, does being typecast only as a face but you're not THE face... kinda stunt your career in the eyes of the people? Like don't you HAVE to be good either way to be a contender? Of course I'm talking about their MAIN careers. Once you reach "legends contract status" of course you'll never be a heel again, but that's post-game DLC. We're talking about the actual "campaign" that is their core career.
What I'm saying is if you're only good at doing one... it better be fucking GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD bruh.
Edit: I do concede if there was a thread here somewhere in this... 95% of PW will not be able to decipher it.
