This is more of a personal PW thread, but feels like it relates to us as fans more. Plus if you ain't still "following" I doubt you'd qualify. Do you use jargon IRL? I type it out on PW like "getting over" and "no sell" and I do, sorry, relate people to midcarders and stars. Outside of the sphere I think I throw them out there to my immediate family unintentionally... cuz sometimes it just sounds cooler. For instance I have on more than one occasion turned to my brother and used Raven's "what a mark" and it gets a pop so it remains in rotation. I know mark isn't exclusively wrestling but cmon bro there's no way he knows what it meant. I just have a confidence and look when I say it that it just gets over.
I mean we can turn this into a discussion on terms in general but baseline... do you expose yourself like I do?

Funny how many of these terms pop up magic and related areas. For instance props are gimmicks. Spectators are marks. Being smart is knowing the basics of magic. A worker or mechanic is someone skilled at sleight of hand.
I suspect all of the terms come from carney speak and been bastardized.

Unsurprisingly yes. Not as much as I used to, but I'll still drop heel, face, jobber, jabroni, push, over, work, main event, midcard, and no sell from time to time. Come to think of it I use these often around my mom. Guess she took my brother's spot. Even got her calling people jobbers/jabronis a few years ago. I'll occasionally opine "x should get a push" at work. People don't always know what I'm talking about, but that's par for the course with me.

I use " no sold " regularly, when someone absolutely no sells a joke or comment, or something happening right in front of them, etc.
And " work " as in " he's working you " ie; lying/manipulating you.

I use the words "Marks" and "Work" a lot whenever I end up in a political discussion. You really legit have people here where I live that thinks a rich billionaire born and bred in Jersey gives a fuck about their confederate monuments haha.

Wrestling terms in the wild crack me up. The recent episode of Marvel's Secret Invasion Roadie says he " DDT'd Fury from the top rope, real Undertaker stuff " or something like that.
It's a really niche reference, that likely only pops a small part of the fans and.. I've never seen Undertaker DDT anyone from the top rope.

I only use these terms on PW. I just noticed I do use a wrestling term outside of PW. Gimmick. I describe a person's quirk or behaviour pattern as a gimmick, usually in a derogatory way.

Back when podcasting was a thing I remember always marking out for that with Stone Cold. Calling everything from bills to whatever a gimmick.
"You get these gimmicks in the mail"
I dunno why but it just connected with me when he said it.
Gimmick is a weird one. It describes who you are... but also the dreaded foreign object is a gimmick. Also a match type.

all the time, between PW, watching wrestling and being involved in Indy wrestling it’s rare I go a day without it being Brought up. So I’ll forget and use it with a non-fan and they’ll be confused. I told one of my co-workers (a fellow fan) that someone worked stiff and other co-worker walked past very concerned  I’ll annoy sandylea with it too, if she is ordering for us tell her to order something with “no gimmicks” but we both use “what a mark” a lot

I've fallen victim to the same fate of mistakenly using the word gimmick to the dreaded non-fans. However, it is actually a normal word with a real definition that isn't associated with wrestling, so that's when I pull out the dictionary warrior card and just explain the word to them without mentioning wrestling and then I seem like an intelligent badass. Or at least someone with an "intelligent badass" gimmick.

As System said we both use what a mark A LOT, I try not to use it around friends that aren’t wrestling fans but I do slip up. Same with referring to someone as a face or heel. Usually System and I use heaps of wrestling terms to each other but it’s very rare I’ll use them in normal conversations unless they can also apply to that topic eg. Gimmick can be used to talk about board games and it’s not weird
