(Rather than bombard the poor Entertainment subbie with video game originated music, I thought it makes sense to bring a thread to the V&G forum)
Pretty self explanatory thread, what music in video games are you listening to? The retroheads can jump in, the modern gamers can too, it's a giant smorgasbord of video game music.
(This track I continue to come back to every couple of months, can't help it as it continues to pop up on my Synthwave feeds. I thought Paradise Killer the game was alright but this ending track is anything but alright. What a banger man. So friggin' catchy and the vibes you get after finishing the game to jam to this is just well done)
For the retro audience here.
(My goodness gracious, just adrenaline pumping. Shumps are one of those genres that pump out amazing OSTs that you don't truly get to appreciate because of the action going on the screen that you literarily cannot take your eye away from)
I continue to stumble upon cover songs of tracks I really like out of gaming, might share some more of that. Definitely lean toward older tracks of the 90's but every now and then a recent game just delivers something epic here and there.

Genesis got Wily Wars but yeah nah man SNES had some pure bangers with just Mega Man X by itself. (Doesn't matter what version you listen to from Spark Mandrill's theme, you can't destroy greatness) Arguably one of the best soundtracks of all time, just for the sake of this thread alone I just posted my 3 favorites.

SNES music sounds like trumpety fart noises to me. Genesis all the way for sure. Both are phenomenal to be honest. SOR gets a lot of love(Rightful so) for that soundtrack but Final Fight's Bay Area is on par with some of what SOR was throwing out. Capcom in the 90's was just on something else with the music they were putting out. Mega Man and Street Fighter no doubt carried the way but there were so much stuff put out by them during this era that was really good.

Just so this isn't totally late 80's/early 90's, this might be up there with best soundtrack of the 2010's, I come back to this album every few months, it's that good. Eat up the covers of this too.
The entire Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance OST just slaps. Everything. Another OST you can just do cardio or workout to. I went with just a couple of the tracks but honestly.... most if not all of the songs in that game are fantastic.

I'll raise you the Sega CD version of Final Fight
All of the Sega CD games you can listen to the game soundtrack like a normal CD. I put on the Ecco The Dolphin CD soundtrack while cleaning the house a couple weekends ago and it hit the spot about as hard as it could be hit, fucking serene. Also the Terminator CD soundtrack slays as well, I would drive around listening to that whenever they had CD players in vehicles.
Metal Gear Rising is something I really need to grab and play soon. Remember REALLY loving all of Raiden's parts in part 4 and stoked about that game when it was being hyped just never got around to it then it got old.

Thunder Castle was playing checkers when everyone else was still playing chess...
Then you've got multiple bangers from the Dragon Warrior series, Mega Man 2, Duck Tales, and Uncharted Waters on Nobi's Genesis. Plus The Legend of Zelda theme. Could see myself spamming this thread for the next week. You've already got me listening to orchestral versions of Dragon Warrior themes as I'm typing this.

This song has no reason to go as hard as it does...
Love that era of music, here's a couple of other highlights...
The Tekken OSTs all hold up extremely well.
I recently heard this and completely forgot it came from FFX. The OST for that is so amazing and instantly makes any video essay better.
Shin talking up the brilliant X-Men Saturn port took me about to how many awesome stage tracks there were. Here's one of my faves:

Sonic 3 boss really grew on me lately. And I mentioned ages ago about Chemical Plant. Like you don't wanna admit it but sometimes they do what NintenDONT Man it really did. The model 1 Genesis with the headphone jack I mean c'mon, if you hook up the splitter cable into the input of a killer stereo system the SNES couldn't touch that. Also some variants of the model 2 had a really high end stereo/audio chip that just can't be topped with the proper AV hookup coming out. Most people only experienced the Genesis with a coax hookup back in the day in mono sound, and most likely with the cheaper made model 2s. Could you imagine having a killer Model 1 hooked up with the Sega CD in say 1992-93? With that hooked up from the headphone jack to some killer stereo and being able to listen to regular CD's with that display on your TV. Must have been mind blowing.

Time to throw some synthwave at your faces...
Furi which is a damn good Indie game(I played it twice and beat it! Didn't die on my 2nd run until the second to last main story boss!) has a pure banger of an OST
Whole game is a pure trip and it is pretty hard but man the pure boss fight after boss fight is just damn good.

NFL 95 deserves a mention the 90s west coast hip hop beats still slap. It was part of the experience, would just listen to the music of the game while spending hours customizing rosters and simulating seasons, pretty relaxing and chill time.
Game was loaded with stats and data for every player in the league so this was like having pro football reference at the house in 1995. My brother used to hate when I would rent this game because I wouldn’t even play football just tinkering with rosters, looking through stats, simulating seasons.

Before there was Zelda, Fanaxadu was my frame of reference for any Action-Adventure game. Baker please tell me your familiar with this classic?

Before there was Zelda, Fanaxadu was my frame of reference for any Action-Adventure game. Baker please tell me your familiar with this classic? Knew of it. Was on my radar for a long time. But there was always something else slightly more appealing. Never owned it. Sadly never even played it. Started watching a playthrough this morning though! Anyway, here is some music worthy of a Hero... And a souped up Star Warsy version...
