Blue Lines Massive Attack (1991) The version I listed to is the “2012 mix/master” as I couldn’t find the original recording. If there’s a major difference let me know. The best comparison I can make with the limited amount of bands I normally listen to is My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult meets Nine Inch Nails (and some tap thrown in as icing on the cake). Instrumentally this album is incredible all the way through. Some of the vocals I wasn’t a huge fan of (You know the drill I hear an English accent and the rating goes down 😒) but there’s so many different rappers/singers and vocal styles throughout this should be something for everyone’s taste. Somewhat similar to all the diverse sounds and genres on Screamadelica but with a lot less repetition & psychedelic music. I’ve heard a lot of praise for their album Mezzanine so I’ll have to check that out sometime Rating 9/10

I'm interested in what you'll think of Mezzanine and Protection. There's so brilliant tracks on them.
Protection's titular track is a masterpiece. As is Angel from Mezzanine.
Hot tip, if you hear Angel in a movie, something bad is about to happen...
And finally, a lot of Massive Attack songs have this weird ability to sound newer than most new songs.

Achtung Baby U2 (1991)
I’ve never heard anyone on the middle with U2, it’s either they are the worst or the greatest band out. I like a few singles here and there but if you told me to name a completely safe inoffensive band they’d come to mind (along with Coldplay). Which there’s nothing wrong with that, not every band needs to be Edgy (no pun intended) as I can understand why they get so many commercials and gigs like the Las Vegas sphere as they aren’t going to cause any controversy. Like Jerry Seinfeld stand up it’s clean. I don’t know what the radio is like where Ness is, but bands like this get heavy rotation on boomer-centric stations like Triple M as they aren’t going to play anything risqué. I don’t know why people enjoy or at least tolerate these threads considering I have no Musical knowledge, I have no idea what Henry Rollins (1:08) is saying here instrumentally is true or not. But as far as enjoyment goes for me, I was just incredibly bored among moments of “huh? Yeah I think I know this from the radio” back to boredom. I like the song Vertigo which isn’t on this album. Ten Pearl Jam (1991) I’ve heard most of this album before (as have most people over 30) so I already knew this was going to be up my alley. Even Flow, Black and Jeremy are all brilliants and the deep cuts don’t disappoint ever. Eddie Vedder’s vocal style is definitely an acquired taste but I feel like it gives Pearl Jam it’s charm. I always feel like Pearl Jam get the Pepsi treatment over the next band on this list, partially because the band is still going/Vedder is still alive so no idolising of dead rockstars like a lot of people do. Absolutely fantastic stuff, lyrics (that you admittedly have to read along to 😂) are great and cover some very heavy themes in a subtle way. Rating 10/10

Don't forget ' Alive ' on that list of great songs from Ten.
Pearl Jam is probably my favourite band. The catalogue is massive, the quality of songs is amazing. And Eddie Vedder is a god like figure - he's just the coolest dude in the world and he ain't even trying, and he's also a damn good human-being.
I suspect you're going to review Nevermind next. It is a masterpiece and deserves every bit of credit that it gets. It was a game-changer. Hands down. I also hate the comparisons between Nirvana and Pearl Jam. They sound nothing alike and come from very different places musically. As do the other 2 " Big 4 " grunge bands ( Soundgarden and Alice in Chains ) all 4 are uniquely different.
I was lucky enough to see Pearl Jam in 2009 and it was fucking phenomenal.

Nevermind Nirvana (1991)
Album cover censored so I don’t breach the TOS again. The Nirvana baby is only a month younger than I. The album: Songs about the tragic rape & kidnapping of a girl, a naked baby on the cover, territorial pissings, denying the possession of a firearm and telling tales of living under a bridge eating fish. Along with an at times abrasive genre that’s just getting its start. Does this sound the recipe for an incredibly successful album? No. Is it? Yes. Nirvana was on a major label for this so it’s not like they were intending to fail but it’s ironic just how popular this album is and by extension the band that you can barely go anywhere without seeing a Nirvana shirt, myself being one of them. So having merch at your local K-Mart (not to be confused with Kmart) and constant radio play to this day was probably the exact opposite of what the band saw themselves as at this point. While this is much more radio-friendly than the follow up In Utero (an album I love for different reasons) it’s definitely not in the same vein of Coldplay/U2 and other ultra successful safe music. The artwork came true I guess. As I mentioned above I’m only very slightly older than Spencer Elden so I can’t speak on it first hand but it’s insane that this album was part of a huge cultural shift. I can’t think of a scene that captures what I’m trying to get at it better than this but with a different attitude. Smells like Teen Spirit I’ve heard too many times as I use to it listen to it constantly when I taped the video of one of the classic music channels on Austar, along with come as you are. There was also some site (idk remember name) but looked very similar to discogs and I’d listen to a few tracks on there as they just had singles not full albums (just before limewire was a thing ) In Bloom is a fantastic track, Polly is incredibly vivid, Something in the Way is so moving it made a lot of people believe it was a true story. Can’t praise this album enough. I know I give a lot of albums a 10 (because I enjoy things 🤷🏻♀️) but even the harshest critics out there will list this as the crème de la crème of albums. Metallica Metallica (1991)
(Cut/paste from Metallica thread)
Probably the album I'm most familiar with as I've heard about 5 of the songs of this before and is more of the sound I was expecting from Metallica. Which makes sense as this album came out the year I was born so their change in style had already happened as I was growing up. Guy at my old work would constantly put on "The Unforgiven" on the jukebox everytime he started work...I like the song but glad I've had a rest from it for a decade or so
Album is excellent for the majority of it's runtime, then in a recurring theme in this thread but it just keeps going a bit too long. That's all the negative stuff I really have to say about this, as I already stated I preferred the softer stuff so I'm glad they went in this direction personally...can see why fans of their older stuff may not have liked it but this has been my favourite thus far.
The cover of "So What" that is a bonus track on the upload I listened to is awful, not counting that because it's not on the OG album though.
br] Favourites: The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman
Least Favourite: My Friend of Misery 9/10

Smug muso journalists have been trying to convince the world that The Stone Roses were something amazing. Outside of Fools Gold, I can't name a single song. And I'd suggest 99% of people would have ever heard of them.
Same goes with Modest Mouse, for 20 years journalists have been jerking off to their music, yet no one can tell you who the fuck they are.

76 3 Feet High and Rising De La Soul (1989) Thankfully I decided to do this thread this year, not last or I’d have to buy the CD. This is such a jovial album and outside of one track (that’s a skit anyway) there’s no coarse language which is incredibly rare for a hip-hop album. Though the track “De La Orgee” doesn’t fit the vibe of this album at all. While it covers some adult themes in the lyrics they are more so alluded to. This has skits galore and it gets a bit too goofy at times, but nothing completely insufferable. It reminded me a lot of KMD, the group MF DOOM was in who probably took a lot of influence from De La Soul so if you like this check KMD out. “The Magic Number”, “Change in Speak”, “Buddy” featuring the Jungle Brothers & Q-Tip are all great tracks as is most of the music when it’s actually happening. I would have given this a higher rating if it was a much more concise album so definitely keen to check out the rest of the discography. Like Kanye West’s “Graduation” definitely worth listening to if you need cheering up. I don’t have a problem with this style of rapping (anti-mumble? Idk ) but this constantly came to mind while listening to this: (1:41) Rating 8/10

I've always had a soft spot for De La Soul. Something fun in a sea of serious 90s Hip Hop.
I would often subject my kid to De La Soul when he was a barely a year old and he was too young to argue back.

I never really looked into The Stone Roses, but I'd imagine it's like Blur who were incredibly popular in the UK but didn't really blow up elsewhere despite being revered as one of the best bands of the decade. Mass appeal doesn't always denote quality and bands that were huge down-under like Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Skyhooks etc. barely got any attention overseas yet they're celebrated here.
As far as Modest Mouse goes, it was about 20 years ago where the 'smug muso journos' started turning on them. Their first three albums were highlighy celebrated, but around the time Float On was released the critics started to turn on them. Still, Float On became an anthem, popping up in a ton of TV shows, video games and was later sampled in a Lupe Fiasco song years later keeping it in the zeitgeist. When fans chart the 00s in music, they're going to be one of the bands that inevitably pops up.
Personally speaking, I really dug the song Dashboard off their 2007 release. Johnny Marr joined the band for the album, so it leans even further into post-punk which is the type of sound I enjoy (and System seems to hate). I was disappointed that New York City Cops wasn't on my initial album and had to download the song off of iTunes to make it right - the solo alone makes it worthwhile.

Entroducing… DJ Shadow (1996)
I’ve seen this album hyped up to no end online and from people that love vinyl collecting, which considering the cover is people in a vinyl store and the album is almost entirely just samples from vinyls I see the appeal. But unless you’re aspiring to be the next Flying Lotus or Metro Boomin (if young metro doesn’t trust you 🔫) or someone that just absolutely loves instrumental albums this definitely isn’t the masterpiece people make it out to be imo. It’s some interesting beats and some spoken word samples that don’t really add anything to the music. It’s not bad by any stretch but this is like like putting the MF DOOM special herbs vol 1 as the definitive DOOM album. Rating 5/10 I spun the shit out of this in my DJ days. Was like a must have for all DJs. For anyone into turntablism literally is a must have. Still is a mid era album which is not for everyone. This was a weird ass era for turntable shit. They dropped the MCs, most dropped scratching altogether, and it was basically just digitally mixing tracks. So turntablism without turntablism as it was known before. So groundbreaking at release, later era stuff mixed this style, with the OG style, bringing in guest rappers or singers giving you shit like Gorillaz or Flying Lotus.

Tracey Thorn fit in so well. Blue Lines is ok but not my fav. Band needed more time to cook. By Protection was like a totally different band as everyone jumped up massively in terms of skill.

Doolittle Pixies (1989) Man, what a whirlwind of an album. I feel like Taz just spun right by me. Either the Looney Tunes character or the wrestler suplexing me in his heyday. Amazed this came out in 1989, as it sounds completely a head of its time. Skinny Puppy’s “VIVIsectVI” is probably the closest comparison I can make in terms of being ahead of its time and dealing with dark subject matter but they sound nothing alike. Like a Napalm Death album the tracks that are all fairly short, “Hey” being the longest at 3:32. The two vocalists give this album an incredible range to its already vast array of sounds. I don’t know to describe this album other than chaos. Was hooked this entire album not knowing where it was off to next. Rating 10/10

They knew it too. Somewhere there was a quote of them saying they were worried it sounded too much like Pixies and people would be upset. That said, Kurt made it very clear he loved the Pixies and that was the first time a lot of people heard of the band since MTV never played them.

Paul’s Boutique Beastie Boys (1989) “Why ya yelling at the mic?” - Eminem Instrumentally this album is amazing and I can see why it’s so critically acclaimed for the production side of things, it felt like more yelling/rapping loudly as a necessity to be heard over the beat rather than their style. I listen to the 20th anniversary edition so idk if that makes a difference but I feel like bumping the vocals up a notch would have worked wonders. Shake Your Rump, Johnny Royal & High Plains Drifter were the highlights of the album for me with “The Sounds of Science” being the only glaringly bad track for me. Thought for sure “Licensed to ill” would have been the recommendation on this list instead though. Rating 9/10

I read that today this album would cost 30 million to make after getting all the samples cleared most sampling rights reform.
Not the best Beastie Boys album, that is Licensed to Ill, but a masterpiece of turntablism from Mix Master Mike and production from the Dust Brothers. Licensed to Ill they were a gimmick band though of white boy rappers, and this one proved they could hang with the absolute best. B-Boy Bouillabaisse was a hip hop game charger on the production side. Basically set the blueprint for what a mixtape would be.
One of my DJ friends literally had a record crack from spinning B-Boy Bouillabaisse so much he just wore the shit through. That track was like sampling dream for scratching as it was just so many breaks layers on top of each other. And worked so well paired with Santana or James Brown.

Like a Prayer Madonna (1989) What seems like it might be a bubblegum album on first glance it doesn’t take you long to realise this deals with some heavy subject matter regarding not only Madonna’s life but religion and her upbringing surrounding it. Till Death Do Us Part probably being the best example of this, just sounding like a pop song about a typical love gone wrong story until you listen carefully and read it into more and realise how badly these went wrong and the heavy subject matter. “Love Song” is a great track with Prince being a great addition to the album. Like a Prayer has become iconic in its own right (moreso the video) and “Pray for Spanish Eyes” is my favourite track on this album. “Oh Father” is an incredibly powerful track. Dear Jessie is probably the only track I didn’t really care for but it’s a slight lull in the album rather than anything noticeably bad. Rating 9/10

Daydream Nation Sonic Youth (1988)
I don’t know whether this album wants to me to chill out or make me angry. Wildly inconsistent, some tracks seem mellow then it turns into industrial noises that seem like they are intending to give me a headache. I don’t mind harsh music but but I don’t think it works well here with the more laid back tracks. Especially being 70 mins long this was a slog to get through. There is some good tracks here and there but this didn’t really work for me,brother! Rating 4/10

For Daydream what you are missing is it was a double LP. So record 1 side 1 was heavy but the rest was not. One of my favorite albums though. If you do not like Thurston's guitar though could see it being grating as fuck. Very much a precursor to the scene that celebrates itself side of gaze, and later on scene.
