I think they knew what they were doing but I also wouldn't be surprised if the angle got way more interest than they were expecting and they pivoted. Could be why it has been dragged out this long. It is rare for something like this to take this long in AEW. Normally Tony can't wait to bust his nut on surprises. And we all know Tony reads the comments and when he saw everyone hating on the Jack Perry idea he may have said "uhhh it was never Jack Perry! That would be stupid!" then shoved Jack Perry in a janitor's closet and switched up the Devil.

Or this was the plan all along and they're overstaying their welcome. I'm giving it until World's End and if that show closes without revealing the Devil then I'm going to complain a lot.

Complaints aside though, it is pretty cool that we're at the point now where the Devil could literally be anyone. The fact it has been kept a secret and kept the fans guessing with every appearance has been well executed.

Timelines looking like this could be Jacob's first big angle as part of AEW creative. Given how much it feels like Project 161 likely Devil and his henchmen hop the guardrails after World's End, and brutally lay out both Joe and MJF, then de-mask and do their stable announcement promo. Essentially the Age of the Fall debut, except without Jay raining blood onto the ring below. And given how that angle played out, I would say the Devil will be obvious, and just be Perry returning with other guys lost in the shuffle of AEW. The big reveal will not be OMG it is Perry, but the brutality.

That is what I would expect if this is Jacob's creation, and it certainly does feel like it. And Jimmy is a master of creating moments, but weak as the sustain, which is kind of the problem of this angle.

I also can absolutely see Jacobs working with Perry on a character that was like his Age of the Fall character. Someone just fed up with his treatment and decides it is time to take what he wants by force. I do hope if this is the direction this is all going, Perry start using spikes like Jimmy did.
