Onyx was me. Hell I think my list was mostly influenced by the anime and SSB than red and blue. That comic puts weaknesses into a new light. Spit can take out a giant rock dragon. Okay then.

A few of mine. Porygon for SSB. I love that game. Fuck you! Beedrill is all about looking cool. Yeah Butterfree gets better moves but looks like a damn overgrown fruitfly. I should be a member of Team Rocket because it's all about looks!

Shellder - One of the more underrated Little Cup monsters of all-time. Shellder is one of the most resilient monsters in the game and if used well can pack a punch, either out-lasting it's opposition, or blowing itself up to take one for the time. In the anime I don't really remember anything other than it bit onto slowpoke's tail and fused itself into Slowbro in one of those weird anime lore moments. I also remember it's first appearance in the TCG as apart of the Fossil expansion. Of all the original three releases, Fossil had my favourite art-work and Mitsuhiro Arita's illustration of Shellder just gives it so much more personality than it already had.
Vaporeon - Maybe it was because they were rare, but the Eevolutions were bad-ass in first generation. Vaporeon was the second best member of the family. A high special and good HP made it a viable monster on any team and since Eevee was introduced half-way through the game, you had enough time to get yourself acquainted. Everybody wanted the Eevolutions when the Jungle set came out, even though Wigglytuff was by far and away the best card in the set (Do The Wave!!).
Vileplume - I'm just reminded of ProJared's Nuzcloke run of Fire Red where he was able to beat the Elite 4 with a Vileplume of all things. Personally I was never a fan of it since you already had two other Grass/Poison three-stage monsters and this just seemed like a gimmick monster to ensure you'd trade with your buddies. Since Blue was my first game, I was always on Team Bellsprout.
Charmeleon - Puberty wasn't kind to Charizard. In fairness to Charmeleon, that monster was everywhere. He was the face of a starter deck in TCG, had it's own pack of figurines and was commonly featured on a lot of print materials. In game, he was usually the monster that you'd have from the first gym all the way until the forth by which point it should evolve into the most overrated monster of all-time Charizard.
Dewgong - There were so many water Pokemon. I had a soft spot for Dewgoing, even though the truth of the matter is, it's a poor man's version of Lapras. It just seemed like a monster that was designed since they had the Seaside Cavern and needed some monsters to occupy it.
Pidgeot - One of the more popular Pokemon in the game, not only because it's a popular mode of transport but because of how the original games were designed, it's Normal/Flying typing actually made it pretty powerful. Mirror Move in particular was deadly and he could turn the tide on a lot of battles. It also had a sick looking Jungle illustration.
Eevee - I touched on it with Vapereon, but Eevee was one of the most popular monsters in the game and your choice of Evolution usually spoke volumes of your team or your personality. It's cult status only grew when it was revealed to be Gary Oak's trademark monster. When the real MVP considers Eevee cool enough to be his mascot, it speaks volumes of it's status.
Geodude - Brock's go-to monster and a constant pest inside any cave you visited, Geodude was an underrated monster in the Little Cup scene. Earthquake, Explosion, Rock Slide, Mega Punch - he was a very handy monster for any team.
Omanyte - Was always my fossil monster of choice even before the Helix God meme became a thing. Truth is, it's nothing that special with really low Speed and HP but the big googly eyes made him a keeper. Outside of adding him to my team, I can't say I ever used him.
Jynx - From my list. The idea of in-game trades was really cool and Jynx really stood out since it looked so human. Obviously it caused a stir with it's blackface design but as a monster Jynx was handy since it had a unique typing and the ability to put other Pokemon to sleep. I liked how it was essentially the trademark monster of Lorelai, the first member of the Elite 4.
Primeape - A handy glass cannon, especially when you're constantly coming up against Raticates and Kangaskhan. For the most part I didn't use Primeape, but Mankey became a go-to in Pokemon Yellow since the game forces you early onto consider the team dynamic of the game.
Mr. Mime - Another in-game trade monster, except you've got to back-track to come across it. Mime was probably the most unpopular psychic monster in the game and really it's best remembered for it's appearance in the anime. Of all the monsters that should have known more unique moves, Mr Mime tops the category.
Onix - Easily the most disappointing monster in the game. Outside of knowing Bind which was a pain in the arse back then, nothing stood out about Onix other than being Brock's Pokemon.
Marowak - Of all the Pokemon, it had one of the more interesting stories haunting the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. I've always wanted to use a Marowak, but since Thick Club isn't useful in the game, it's too slow and too weak to really justify playing around with. It does have a bad-arse design - a dinosaur wearing the skull of another monster. Heavy metal as anything.
Beedrill - It's a trap and if you fell for it's cool design you've got nobody but yourself to blame. Butterfree >>> Beedrill all day everyday and may god have mercy on your soul.
Dragonair - Anything that was a Dragon type in the original games was automatically cool. I'd argue that Dragonair was one of the few monsters where the middle form looked better than the final version.
Jolteon - Best electric monster in the game and the best Eevolution. Great Special, Great Speed and a strong move-pool makes it a great addition to any team. Even the guys behind the TCG knew this, giving Jolteon the best holo of all the Eevolutions.
Machoke - From now on I'm going to stop commenting on first or middle forms. Machoke was OK, but it paled in comparison to having Goro from Mortal Kombat in your team.
Porygon - Can we just call a spade a spade and declare Porygon as the most evil monster in the series? Before we even knew what a 'Pok-E-Man' was, we knew about some show in Japan that caused a bunch of kids to go into seizures. On top of that, in order to 'capture' Porygon, you have to become a high roller in the casino, betting all your precious dollars and spending all your precious childhood hours sweating away at some casino. For all the misery it inflicts, Porygon is ultimately let down by it's poor-stats. It actually has a really diverse move-pool but you can't get a lot of bang for your buck. He's a fun Pokemon to mess around with and stands out, but damn it if a bunch of kids didn't know about it.
Sandslash - Has one of the coolest designs in the game, but it's slow speed and poor defence makes it sort of useless. He's a glass cannon, who usually has to endure a hit before it can get one away. I'm not sure what it was with Gen 1 but the Ground monsters never could live up to the hype.

Finally a couple Pokemon from my list made the countdown, I had both Charmander and Jolteon on my top fifteen list. Jolteon is my favorite first gen Eevee evolution, and my second favorite overall (only behind Umbreon).
I like Rapidash but was disappointed that we never got a flaming pegasus version of it as a mega evolution.
My List
13. Jolteon 5. Charmander

Dragonair, Rapidash and Hitmonlee made my list. Dragonair is perhaps the coolest looking first gen Pokemon. A beautiful Pokemon, and far better-looking than its evolution, Disney Charizard. Rapidash is a super fast unicorn with a flaming mane. What's not to love? Sadly I didn't appreciate the awesomeness of Rapidash when I first got the game. Kicks are super cool, much cooler than punches. Therefore Hitmonlee is far cooler than Hitmonchan, and cooler than most other Pokemon. To be fair, Hitmonchan does get a Fire, Ice and Thunder move which is pretty nice, but as a non-competitive, non-knowledgeable player, aesthetics means more to me. Plus I loved the high damage/crash-and-burn nature of High Jump Kick.

Pokemon Name: Machop (12P - 1L) Pokemon Number: 066 Pokedex Entry Very powerful in spite of its small size. Its mastery of many types of martial arts makes it very tough.
Pokemon Name: Psyduck (12P - 1L) Pokemon Number: 054 Pokedex Entry Always tormented by headaches. It uses psychic powers, but it is not known if it intends to do so.

Pokemon Name: Muk (13P - 1L) Pokemon Number: 089 Pokedex Entry Thickly covered with a filthy, vile sludge. It is so toxic, even its footprints contain poison.
Pokemon Name: Oddish (13P - 1L) Pokemon Number: 043 Pokedex Entry It may be mistaken for a clump of weeds. If you try to yank it out of the ground, it shrieks horribly.
Pokemon Name: Omastar (13P - 1L) Pokemon Number: 139 Pokedex Entry A prehistoric Pokémon that died out when its heavy shell made it impossible to catch prey.

Oddish is my #2. It's hard to explain why I like him so much. I just find the concept of a weed with legs (but no arms), eyes and mouth to be just terrific. His evolutions suck though. Ugly motherfuckers.
Psyduck is one of my least favourite Pokemon. He's insufferable in the anime and spams annoying moves like Amnesia and Disable in battle. Golduck isn't bad though.

Psyduck was mine. And it's all because of how stupid and cute he was in the anime.
Looking back now, there was one water Pokemon from Misty's line-up that I didn't include! ARGH.

Growlithe was on my list , just an awesome looking little Pokemon. I don't remember him much from the show , but he was the one Pokemon I was the most proud to get in GO - I hunted for that little bastard forever and made him my buddy promptly.
Jolteon was on my list as well , as others have said - far and away the best Eeveelution.
Machop was mine as well , another proud moment of mine and I've always been a fan of fighting Pokemon. It's just in my nature I suppose.

A few of mine. Chansey because of SSB, but I also my best friend in middle school (height of Pokecraze) was named Chance and he HATED Pokemon. Yeah, that was a recipe for disaster. Magmar's episode in the anime was epic, so I chose him. Seemed so very badass even if he looks like a dweeb. Wartortle looks awesome and a shame he has to eventually evolve.

Chansey also made my list. I love that she's the mascot of the Pokemon center and she's one of my favorite Pokemon to use in the first generation games. She's a frickin' (soft and squishy) brick wall with her HP so high and her Special stat also astronomical. She can heal herself and shrug Blizzards off for DAYS.
And she's pink and round and fat. And has an egg with her all the time. <3

I don't remember if he made my list or not, but Cloyster rocks. I seem to be partial towards ice Pokemon and ice moves. He also looks really cool. Indestructible.
Starmie is a badass. A flying, spinning, crystalline purple star with a gem at its core who can blast you with ice, water, and psychic attacks. What's not to love?
Butterfree is interesting because it's the first fully evolved Pokemon I and many other players got. Catch a Caterpie in the forest, fully evolved by level 16 or something similarly low. Although you did have to go through the chore of manual exp sharing to get that fucking Metapod to level up. Beedrill may be worse in battle, but he's a badass. Neither made my list.

Butterfree was #15 on my list. It was one of my first favorite Pokemon because of the anime.
Starmie was my #1, though. STARMIE IS AMAZING. I love its design. It just sucks that anime Starmie was made to look weak compared to Staryu (which Misty used in battle more often). In the games though, Starmie's Psychic typing and access to electric moves made it a killer. Starmie was a staple on my Pokemon team.

Hitmonchan placing higher than Hitmonlee is a travesty.
Alakazam and Gastly are both from my list. I love the way the psychic pokemon were portrayed in the first series of the anime, completely unbeatable, and although Sabrina's Kadabra was the star, I went for Alakazam because he's higher on the evolution chain and has a cooler design. Later on in the anime Ash goes to find some ghost pokemon to beat the invincible Kadabra. Gastly and its evolutions made a strong impression on me the first time I watched the anime. For some reason when playing the game I get the impression that Gastly is small, like the size of a basketball, but on TV he's as big as an adult human. The gen 1 ghost Pokemon remain the best ghost Pokemon.
