I personally love public art. I love that people have to deal with it and it is not hidden in a museum. But, I feel paradoxically torn with unsolicited public art. Recently there was a Banksy work on a stop sign and within hours of it being verified, it was taken by two folks. While I like that people are subjected to public art, I am not sure that there should be a value on preserving unsolicited public art. If Banksy paints on a wall, I think it is fine that someone paints over it, or takes it down. Stealing the stop sign may be a crime. But is it a crime to remove the artwork? Did the artist already plan on this when they "installed it"? Is it just glorified graffiti?

Outside of a standard vandalism charge I’m sure it’s an offence to obscure a traffic stop sign?
