Use this thread to flex on us or let us know your gaming downfalls. Have a hard to get platinum?
Can’t finish a super easy game?
Strengths:
+ Fighting games
Co-worker says to me: Do you play Street Fighter? I (jokingly) tell him to go tell other co-worker who I’ve known for 11 years what he just said to me. He explains he just bought Street Fighter 6 and wants to play in a few games.
Other co-worker cracks up and tells him he is going to get absolutely disrespected. 23 games later of taking consistent L’s he rage quit. I’ve made a bet with him if he can beat me in Street Fighter by the end of the year I’ll give him $100. Only February but almost 100 games later I’m still doing ok.
I have a Dhalsim tattoo and a Ryu phone case he should have known
I’m no Diago (though I did plan to play in a tournament but the BO was horrendous so I left) but can make quick work of any new players in Street Fighter/Tekken or Mortal Kombat. Don’t really care for Guilty Gear/Blazblue etc.
I don’t have many Platinums but I have one for SFV which is reportedly one of the hardest to get.
Platformers:
While Donkey Kong Country was seemingly much more popular than Mario in Australia I’ve beaten most of the most well known & difficult platformers.
Stealth Games:
I used to drive my brothers insane making sure I got Silent Assasin on every level on all the Hitman games.
Weaknesses:
- Puzzle games
I used to enjoy puzzle games but now even the simplest puzzles I can’t seem to work out. I’ll watch a video and just be shocked at how I didn’t get it.
I hard to watch a walkthrough for Dead Island 2 last night and all you had to was attack 3 slightly hidden switches.
- Metroidvanias
Or as AVGN puts it one of those “where the fuck do I go?” Kind of games. It took me an embarrassingly long time to finish Axiom Verge.
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
I know this isn’t a genre but why do I struggle so much with this game?! I’ve beaten all 3 Dark Souls games & Sekiro but I die within seconds on this constantly.

Weaknesses
Metroidvanias - I don't mind exploration but games that are big labyrinths forcing me to backtrack to unlock a new zone when I receive the next upgrade is tedious and frustrating. I don't have the memory or the patience for that.
Open world - I don't mind exploration but too much exploration is a bad thing. I know myself so I know if you give me a gave with unlimited freedom I'm just going to fuck around (which is fun to a point), not make any progress with the actual game, and feel dissatisfied.
Fighting games - My problem with fighting games is that to GIT GUD you have to learn and memorise endless sequences of counterintuitive button combinations. Yes once you train the muscle memory it's great but I don't have the inclination to do that especially since I have no interest in competitive gaming. Plus I lost most of my reflexes and reactions a long time ago, can't compete with the younger generations.
RTS - A genre that combines my two biggest deficits: complex inputs + requirement to be as fast as possible.
Souls games - My one experience with these games - Elden Ring - tells me these games are not for me. Similar to fighting games, the secret to winning is to rote learn the boss patterns and train yourself to react well enough. It's like practicing to be good at a sport. Hours and hours of drilling the same thing. It's work, not fun!
Building games - I'd rather spend hours drilling an Elden Ring boss fight than spend hours piling virtual blocks on one another. There's little I find less interesting. I am somewhat envious of the millions of people who have the creative brains to take enjoyment from stacking blocks.
Strengths
Puzzle games - I'm a chess player, what do you expect? I like thinky games, and while I can't say I master every puzzle game (Braid perplexes me) I'm generally very good at them.
Platformers - I enjoy all types of platformers and I pick them up pretty quickly.
Turn-based RPGs - Great stories, great characters, it's like an interactive movie with layers of strategy.
FPS games - At least this was a strength 10+ years ago. Yes it requires fast reflexes but unlike fighting games there aren't any complex inputs. Run with WASD keys, point with mouse, click to shoot. It doesn't get much more complicated than that. In my day I was pretty handy at the likes of Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament. I was never great at these games, the really great players wreck me, but I could hold my own.

Strengths: JRPGs: I am not as good to them as I used to be but it becomes a matter of managing your time for one. It's quality>quantity in this regard but once I get a good JRPG, I am going head first into the water. Happening right now with Persona. Prefer turn based/slower over the action RPG style that exists in tons of games. Platformers/Metroidvanias: I lump them in together but honestly, such an easy genre for me to get into. I grew up with these type of games then again so it's up my wheelbarrow. Far from a prodigy but stuff like Donkey Kong or Mega Man X or newer Castlevanias I can jump in and rock & roll. Even the PS2 platformers like Jak, R&C and Sly Cooper I dig. Visual Novels: This is like JRPG where it becomes a fight against time management but I always try and squeeze a couple of these bad boys a year. This is not everyone's cup of tea and it's a genre I tapped into more as I get older. Soulsbourne games: I am not great at these( G/B is however) but I love them and I guess I am better than the casual/average player of these. Another genre that the less I am fatigued with, the better I am so I pick a respectful few to play every year or two. Weaknesses: Fighting games: Love watching them but I don't have the time or energy to truly get into one. When I was younger, different story. Can totally watch a streamer play them though. MMORPG/MOBA: Never got the craze, this is more preference more than anything. Unlike with fighting games, it's not even something I like to watch. FPS Multiplayer or Single player: I am 3rd person>1st person 10/10 times but it doesn't mean the game is doomed for me. I played a lot of Overwatch 1 for example when it came out. I played Dishonored 1 and enjoyed it. Doom 2016 was amazing. Would not say this is a weakness but I don't usually play one of these unless I know I am going to love the game. Very rarely do I play FPS multiplayer games. Call of Duty? No thanks. Sport games: This includes wrestling games. Diehard watcher but excluding rare games like NCAA Football 05 or Rocket League, just not my thing. Couple of old school wrestling games were cool but I just don't jump on the Madden/2K bandwagon every year. I even try MLB The Show but it doesn't really do much for me. Prefer OOTP/Out of the Park honestly. Horror/Traditional Horror: It's not that I am a totally pussy when it comes to these games. Some spook me but I can def. play survival action(Resident Evil 4/Remake is one of my favorite games ever!) but the traditional stuff is hit and miss. Older RE titles with item management and friggin' limited saves is killer, especially as someone who likes to save often and play games in bits & pieces over risking the biscuit. I get why it's there though, for game length padding and making the decisions all the more important. I liked SIGNALIS which was an Indie title that was a throwback to those type of games but didn't love it due to the aforementioned. I get why it's in the game so I can't knock it.

Strengths
Fighting Games- Been playing them since Street Fighter 2 dropped.
Sports Games- Only ones I don't do well in are baseball and basketball. Boxing games I absolutely dominate.
RPG's- Both turn based and action. Western and JRPG's both.
FPS- I prefer the ones that have some kind of plot behind them. But I was also a huge fan of the Unreal Tournament series.
Weaknesses
Platformers- Used to be a strength but I got sick of them
Survival Horror-Just not a genre I enjoy very much. Only survival horror game I really got into was Manhunt.
Puzzle games- I get bored easy,

Weaknesses:
Items: Basic healing/status stuff, sure, easy peasy. But in games with tonics and modifiers and runes and yadda yadda yadda, I've never really been one to sit down and learn all that stuff. Like Souls videos where you see them chug a half dozen things, cast some spells, so on so forth, then go in and murder a boss in one hit...completely lost on me. Most times I forget about them entirely.
RTS: Just, no. Ruined Brutal Legend, the bastards.
Dice Roll games: I really wanted to enjoy Disco Elysium, but I'm just not a believer in RNGesus. It's why I have issues with turn based too, but even those aren't nearly as bad, where it seems like I'm failing as often than not even if I'm rolling for my strengths.
Rhythm based things with two separate things to pay attention to: Most recently, anyone who played the FFVII Rebirth demo, the piano, if I just have to focus on one single thing (like Guitar Hero), I'm great at timing, but with most of my vision coming from my left eye (right is mostly just periphery), I just can't keep it straight in my head looking back and forth.
Not swearing violently at video games: I'm a rage gamer through and through, and I mean RAGE. I'm honestly surprised no one has ever called the police while hearing "DEAD! YOU'RE FUCKING DEAD! YOU STUPID PIECE OF SHIT! DEAD!"
Be back with strengths.

I'd say I have an average to below average ceiling when it comes to games. I've never been a savant and I'm often surprised when I revisit a game, I'm hardly better than I was when I was younger. I would have thought after all these years I could clear a lot of those retro games first try, but I'm barely getting up to the same checkpoints when I was younger.
I've always enjoyed a variety of games, but if I had to pick a favourite genre I'd have to go with third person action adventure/rpgs. Games like Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Nier, Shadow of the Colossus etc. are right up my alley.
On the flipside, while I like JRPGs, I just haven't been able to get into a Western RPG. I actually think they have more going for them than JRPGs, but I just find them so overwhelming I never commit to them like I should.
I enjoy Metroidvanias, but this song constantly pops into my head whenever I'm playing a new entry:
