Discussed briefly in the VG section awhile ago, there’s a whole genre of YouTube that’s just covering and I guess critiquing YouTubers. This one is on James Rolfe aka The Angry Video Nerd who himself is a game critic in the videos. Or Anthony Fantano scoring the new Kanye/Ty Dolla $ign album Which prompted many reacts/reviews to said video www.youtube.com/live/dkH2Evdjv0A?si=jBO0raHNXF_z7wOh ===== It seems like it’s getting to the point where the primary source is the least interesting part for the average viewer and spiraling into reactions of reactions of reactions. As much as I hate the music react videos where it’s like “Guy listens to ____ for the first time” and it’s something like Shake It Off. I can’t deny I watch similar content Do I want to watch a random episode of TNA/Impact from the mid 2010s? No, do I want to watch MarkyD tell the writers to shove it? Sure. Why do you think people find these secondary or even tertiary forms of content so entertaining? Your favourite and least favourite type of this content?

It's weird. Like there's a whole genre of people watching people play games. I like watching videos of people TALKING about games, but not really watching them. In fact if anything I much prefer them to not use game footage at all unless it's stock nonsense like that hotwheels race or whatever. I really don't get the "totes live" reaction videos because why? If you like them and they're actually talking about the stuff sure, but just nonverbal squeals? Fuck outta here.

I watch a few reaction videos on YouTube. I steer clear of the angry nerd type stuff, as credibility means something to me. And they don't have any.
I'll watch Justin Hawkins of The Darkness reacting to music, the same with the traditional vocal coaches disecting the big rock and metal tracks and being completely blown away, as that world is completely new to them.
There's a lot of people just bobbing along in videos claiming " first time hearing " which is complete bullshit. You've never heard of Queen? Or Prince? Or Mariah? Really... the 40 year that's been YouTubing for for 10 years and lived in a world that provides cable, radio and internet... and you've never heard of Nirvana? Right..

The reason people do react videos is they are the easiest content to make. You have to produce almost nothing for them. Whereas other people may put 10 to 20 hours into a 10 minute video, these are pretty much hit record and ship as is.
And they all act the way they do, as that is what the people who seek these out want. Insane reactions to benign things.
IMO this is real bottom of the barrel content.

My favourite is the ones who go " these are the top 10 songs of 2004! " and it's just them nodding their heads with approval for 2 minutes. Absolutely no effort required.
I applaud the fact I take a trip down memory lane, but you know... no effort required.

I don't tik tok. I barely instagram. For whatever the reason I just do not care to watch any videos online. Sports highlights? Sure. Can watch them on mute, great. Otherwise I just scroll by. Reaction videos would be something I'd never waste my time watching. I don't care what these people think.

I like The Try Channel which is Irish people trying product. They’re amusing. Most react videos where someone watches something offer nothing of value. Just someone going “yeah this.”

I'm sure someone knows the legal technicalities here.
If I have a social media account that's capable of generating revenue and I simply post someone else's video then I surely can't make any money on it.
But if I post that same video with me in the corner nodding my head and pointing, does that warrant enough to get paid?

Most don’t rise to that level, not even close.

I've gone through phases of watching those song reaction videos. You watch one and those things show up in your feed for ages. I'm less skeptical than some of you about Reviewer X never having heard *very popular song* before. For example... As much as I hate the music react videos where it’s like “Guy listens to ____ for the first time” and it’s something like Shake It Off. I can’t deny I watch similar content I had no idea what Shake It Off was! Just looked it up. Ahh, PW darling, the NFL's own Taylor Swift, I see. I could not name a single Taylor Swift song. Actually, I can now! Shake It Off. That's one. All people have their blind spots. I have many! So, I think it's entirely possible that some 30–40-year-old has never heard Queen. Or at least never knew that they heard Queen. (Many of those videos end up being "Oh wait. I HAVE heard this song before!") Regret to say I have watched an Angry Video Game Nerd review or two. I blame Big Pete . He linked me the Simon's Quest video years ago. Wasn't a fan of the guy's style. Thought it was garbage. I'm sorry. Lemme type in AVGN. IT WAS GARBAGE!!!! AVGN clones, also garbage. As for video game playthroughs, I've watched a few speed runs + Dragon Warrior IV & Baseball Stars II playthroughs with my brother just because they were NES games we once wanted, never played, and knew I never was going to play. Video game reviews are a lot like song reaction videos. I've gone through phases. Mostly NES & Intellivision reviews, maybe a Sega Genesis or two. I watch/listen to wrestling reviews pretty frequently. Opposite of N A T H when it comes to "credibility." It means nothing to me. Actually, the more "professional" somebody is, the less likely I am to value their opinion. Critic shouldn't be a job. This is the internet. Everyone on here is a critic. It's a hobby. Being paid to tell someone how to think just doesn't sit well with me. I'm much more likely to place stock in the opinion of the proverbial Joe Blow, grocery store employee who makes videos on the side as a hobby and is known to like the thing I like, than some big-name reviewer (assuming such a thing exists) employed by some massive media conglomerate.

I would value the word of someone in the game (whatever game it might be) rather than that of someone gatekeeping on the internet for clout.
You take Justin Hawkins for example and his reaction videos. He an obvious song writer and musician with a some what memorable career. Or ' The Charismatic Vocie ' who is a vocal coach and singer - both are offering insight from not only a professional standpoint but of an experienced one vs @jimmybigdick who thinks everything either sucks or is just trend hoping with insight and opinion that isn't much deeper than that of a SNL satirical take on YouTubers.. come on man, you may as well just watch the actual clip than have to look at someone looking at a clip and snickering to themselves.

I like watching people play horror games if I’m too much of a little bitch to play them myself? Otherwise if I’m watching someone play a game it’s because they are telling a story on top of, or just making up some random nonsense as they play. I like Saint_Riot for this he mainly does Dark Souls 3 invasions. I really like Indeimaus as well, his comments are just hilarious and he does play a lot of games I won’t play myself. Makes heaps of references. The resident evil ones are great Honestly I like more what they saying than the gameplay itself

I don’t really like react videos, sometimes I’ll check out the ones whether a different generation can recognise a show/quote/song etc. and then feel existential dread.
I do really enjoy the channel Charlotte Dobre she essentially reads AITA posts, does the updates and reactions. Obviously I can look these up myself but I like the effort that she gets the updates because most of the time it can’t be bothered. Sometimes I don’t agree with her reactions, but most of the time it’s pretty amusing and she’s just very likeable. I’ll usually go through a phase and watch a lot of videos in a month and then not watch any for months. Rinse and repeat.
I go through the same phases with Anna Solves, Anna Uncovered, and Bailey Sarian (murder stories/true crime etc). Roanoke Gaming (analyses diseases/infections in movies/games), Alex Meyers (talks movies/shows through and points out how insane some things are). High Boi (explains movies/shows etc). Zanny (game play/reviews etc. pretty funny). Kaif (gameplay/) haven’t watched him in ages though.
So pretty much nothing is reaction videos, but I’ll watch some that randomly pop up on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter etc.

I'd like to point out that I didn't recommend the AVGN because I thought Baker would enjoy it. No, no no; rather it was to explain why some of Baker's favourite games get a bad rap. With that said, I enjoyed some of AVGN's earlier videos but they were a product of their time back when a lot of these content created videos were unwatchable. If you want to see what I mean, check out GameLife or the GameDude.
I won't go as far as DarkViper and compare reaction content creators to date rapists, but it's largely just trash. The exception for me is when you get somebody like a Rick Beato who will break a song down and isolate different parts of the song to explain why he does/doesn't enjoy a song. When it's a reaction to another youtube video it honestly feels like petty theft and you rarely if ever get any insight.
I used to enjoy Let's Plays back in the day. This was before everyone and their dog had a podcast, so the conversational style of content set to retro video games was oddly a relaxing way to start a day and gave you something to look forward to as they got closer to beating it. I used to watch this stuff religiously but eventually they'd become miserable to listen to and would lean further into bad comedy or play the game like they were mentally impaired. With that said, if I'm bored enough I'll watch the odd OneyPlays video depending on the game and the guests.
I used to be into EasyAllies as well and would watch their reactions to press conferences. Usually they'd touch on things that I'd miss or give a general gauge on the press conference. Typically I found them pretty useful for conferences like Bethesda or Ubisoft that required a bit more flavour. Then one by one, their best staff members left and now they're all part-time. It was kind of a shame, but you could see the writing on the wall and they weren't producing much outside of their podcasts and live streams.
What do you guys make of true crime youtubers who blur out every second word because they don't want their videos to get demonetised? Or will interject some horrific story about people getting cooked into an ad for Nord VPN?

I don't usually waste my time with them, because it's weird watching someone watch the same thing as me but I'm supposed to be watching their reaction? Now I have watched a couple that break down things like videos or movies. For instance the Deutschland video by Rammstein. There is so much going on in it from a German history perspective, some of which I was not aware of, so I watched this one guy who explained it and some of the lyrics. If I was a gamer they might make more sense, but I'm not so I'll just stay in my happy little non reaction video bubble.

But if I post that same video with me in the corner nodding my head and pointing, does that warrant enough to get paid? The US courts have not really ruled on what the bare minimum needed for transformation is, so right now copyright holders are not suing. But it is believed if they do sue reaction video creators they would win court for most cases. Like just watched and reacting does not transform the content. Stopping and commenting on stuff would however. Seeing some pushback starting notably with Gordon Ramsay who demanded his shit be removed from Twitch, as he was a super popular guy to do reaction stuff too, but it was really just watching MasterChef or Kitchen Nightmares on twitch without permission Where we are right now, if a studio demands their shit removed, no content creator in their right mind would risk a lawsuit by pushing back. And anyone is free to DMCA claim any reaction contact and see it removed.

I feel like it can be a double edged sword with people inside the respective industries. For example I’d put much more weight into Stevie Richard’s critique of a match than CheeseDude420 uploading a rant because so and so can’t work. Anthony Fantano has worked in music and radio and while I don’t agree with almost any of his takes he reviews a lot of genres and covers little known artists so cool to check them out even if he isn’t a fan. I used to watch the YouTuber Chris Stuckmann who seemed very sheltered but otherwise good content and would cover lesser known films more than Jeremy Jahns does. Turns out he was an ex-Jehovah’s witness which isn’t my issue but explains the sheltering. He then got involved in film making and is making his own film so he stopped making his Worst films of the year lists which was bad enough now he just doesn’t cover films he thinks are bad. He obviously doesn’t want any heat now he’s involved in the industry. To me that defeats the whole purpose of being a movie critic. It’s a glorified consumer guide channel, tells us what movies you think are good and what movies to avoid for the people that are selective about what they see at the cinema. I'd like to point out that I didn't recommend the AVGN because I thought Baker would enjoy it. No, no no; rather it was to explain why some of Baker's favourite games get a bad rap. It's cool. Tbh I don't even remember what he said about the actual game. I just wasn't a fan of his style. Too angry & too nerdy, perhaps? Know what's even worse than reaction... people reacting to those same reaction/commentary videos. Dude just admit you have nothing to bring to the table. If the second person reacting adds some really sharp or funny commentary, then it's fine. But when it's just some schmuck point and nodding, it's not fine. I see two pages that are very much a like. One breaks down the sample of a song.. you may have seen them, it begins with " is this the most iconic sample.. " the other page is just some guy sitting there looking at the camera. Why? Why are you necessary for me to hear this sample? Social media in general has lost its creativity. How many guys with skin fades are there walking up to cool cars asking the driver what they so for a living? Too many, Daniel Mac is the OG. Find another gimmick. Or " what do you do for a living and how much do you make... " and it just another skin faded bro bullshiting or " how much rent do you pay in... " ..... it's the same shit delivered over and over again by either the most wooden of presenters with iPhones to their faces used as mics, or the most painful of people.
