Former WWE star Michael Jones, known to fans as Virgil, has reportedly died at the age of 61. Wrestling referee Mark Charles III, known as THe Count, announced news of Jones' death in a Facebook post.

"My dear friends, it is with great sorrow that I bring news from the Jones family of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, whom we know and loved as Virgil, Vincent, Soul Train Jones and more," the post reads. "Virgil passed peacefully at the hospital this morning and I ask that you pray for him and for his family. May his memory be eternal!"

Should have been the first black champion. He had much steam and was white hot going into WM and should have been the new American hero against Slaughter. However, hogan stated this was not going to work for him and used his political power to hold virgil back. If Virgil is not in the HOF this year I am done watching.

I doubt WWE brings him into the Hall of Fame anytime soon. Virgil is known for trying to sleep with everyone he could and bragged about all the women he slept with. Think WWE is trying to move away from this era of wrestling where the guys fucked rats and bragged about it backstage.

Also he is not remembered fondly by all.  Some found him creepy for the way he hit on people.

Hopefully his funeral has way more in attendance than his autograph signings.

Virgil has been a joke for over 25 years and a meme for 10-15, and it's not really fair that his entire career has been reduced to a punchline. People forget he had the best seat in the house for some of the most iconic moments in WWF history. Had a memorable run as Dibiase's bodyguard and was hugely over as a face for a little while there after finally turning on Teddy Wrestling. Then he spent another 3 years later in his career hanging and banging with the NWO. For some of that time they were the hottest act in the business. The man was gainfully employed in mainstream wrestling for like 11 out of 13 years, covering both boom periods. That's not a bad career!

Fun Fact: Either my brother or my friend Will (can't remember which) once saw Virgil hawking his wares at the mall years before it became the first thing people thought of whenever Virgil's name came up.

Virgil vs Dibiase at Summer Slam 1991 was magic. The face turn was so epic! PICK THE MONEY UP, NOW!

A little late on this, but sad to see Virgil pass on. Even if his name in each big company was an inside jab at who was running things in the other company (be it Virgil or Vincent), he was always played the lackey role well, and it made for a good moment when he finally broke away from DiBiase.

RIP Virgil. May you have the longest autograph line in the afterlife.

Virgil for so long, claimed that he was born in 1962. But in reality, he was born in 1951. So that means he was already 40 years old when he won the Million Dollar Belt, and 72 when he passed.

Gonna start shaving 11 years off my age. As a tribute to Virgil.
