Every comment section I see regarding film in general it’s (mostly) older people saying they don’t go the cinema anymore because “movies are too violent/crude/bad language” these days. (Referring to mainstream films.)
Yet they’ve become tamer and tamer over the years with few exceptions (Oppenheimer being the main exception). Not talking about “PC” stuff but actual content wise.
Marvel films are family friendly, horror films like M3GAN & Imaginary are as tame as old Goosebumps episodes and with the exception of No Hard Feelings adult comedies haven’t been a thing for years.
And when they do something mildly risqué people freak out. I read several comments about Eternals of people legimately being distraught over the sex scene in Eternals. It’s so tame it’s laughable in my eyes.
80’s slashers are crude in every possible way as are the comedies or just going back to when I was a teenager films as vulgar as Superbad or as gory as Inglorious Basterds were huge mainstream hits.
I don’t get it.
Am I I degenerate or are people just prudes or somewhere in the middle?

Boomers don't have any issues with the prices just the content?

Boomers don't have any issues with the prices just the content? They purchased their house for the price of a large popcorn combo. Seriously though that too but that’s a separate topic just apply it to films in general including streaming.

I've not come across this opinion - nor would I because I spend very little time on social media - but yes, these days films are tamer and more respectable these days then they have ever been. I guess when you get older you care less about the shock value and immature humour that can come with swearing and violence, but getting up in arms about it is pretty odd. The last film I saw is a British comedy called Wicked Little Letters. It's set in the Victorian era and the premise is that someone is sending out anonymous letters with foul language. Language that is foul even by modern standards. A lot of the humour is generated from the characters reading these letters out loud. If you see the trailer for that film you know exactly what you're getting into so I haven't heard much backlash. It's pretty funny. My verdict: System ain't no degenerate and there are plenty of prudes on the internet.

Mainstream films are made to be inoffensive as they want to appeal to everyone, including people who think R rated films should not have excessive sex, violence and inoffensive humor.
Megan is a good example, as there was a second, more violent cut. But they did not release that one as they wanted a pg-13 rating so they cut out a lot of the violence for the lower rating. And most horror does this, they plan films around the R and if a studio picks it up for mainstream release, they make deep cuts to get a pg-13 for wide release.
Curious how the John Water film Liarmouth that will have Plaza as the lead goes. John is not one to really tone down his films, and if he does, he will make sure the uncut version is the main one streaming. Seems like this will be the final film too from the king of filth.
I do think too things have gotten so conservative in horror, that we are due for a wave of new extreme films. Been a while since Inside and Martyrs lead the last wave, and 20 years still Hostel. About the same for the Miike films. And with streaming, no need to deal with the MPAA.
I do think the era of the small art house filth director is dead though. John Waters is the last of a dying breed and has been for 20 years now. Been 50 years since exploitation was a thing, and while X and MaXXXine may revive it a little for horror, not seeing much of the non-horror side coming out. And the old grindhouses and art houses are few and far between.
