Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney's east on Saturday afternoon, NSW Police say.

Nine people, including a small child, were stabbed by a man in the centre and some are in a critical condition.

The offender was shot dead at the scene by a police officer.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said authorities believe the man acted alone and there is no ongoing threat.

Assistant Commissioner Cooke said he did not have further information about the man's identity.

He said there was no indication of the offender's motive but police had not ruled anything out.

They said the man was in the shopping centre around 3pm before leaving and then returned around 20 minutes later with a knife.

A police inspector, who was nearby, was directed towards the man by witnesses, and she shot him dead after the offender confronted her.

"She confronted the offender, who had moved by this stage to level five, as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch up with him. He turned to face her, raised a knife," Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

"She discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased."

I genuinely felt sad seeing the reports this evening. Particularly hearing one of the dead was a baby.

We can't have these people killing innocents when they are "known". Yeah, I don't have any solutions but we need to find some pretty quick.

Just read that a lone police officer went in and did the job, absolute heroic. "It's just part of the job", sure. However, no hesitation or "following protocol" and going after that scumbag saved lives. That hesitation by law officials cost countless children's lives to be lost in the Uvalde school shooting last year.

It was great that she a Ted swiftly, also appears multiple men confronted the attacker and diverted him away from groups of people. 
It's nice when even amongst the darkest times, you see the best of humanity.

One mall security who was brave and heroic tried to subdue the bastard but got stabbed and perished unfortunately. If he had some sort of weapon, it would have helped. Then again I know Australia is very strict when it comes to that stuff, especially in comparison to the US. 

There was another picture of a citizen using one of those pole barriers to try and block off the dude from getting up the escalator, lost in the senseless a lot of people really stepped up.

The baby survived, currently in a stable condition in hospital so hopefully Bub pulls through. Heartbreaking that the mother passed away, but I can’t imagine how scared the father must be losing your wife and not knowing if your child would survive

I don’t know about the drugs for sure, they seem to be blaming mental illness. He only targeted women, the male that was murdered was the security guard for the most part he avoided men so I think it was definitely a mental thing. He was previously in prison for domestic violence.
Whatever his reasoning I hope he burns in hell. The police officer that took him down is an absolute hero and I hope she’s ok mentally

The father who was unnarmed but turned around and confronted the killer so he could protect his family was the clip that stood out to me.

Also made me think it may have been MRA influenced.

The father believes it wasn't random and the killer had expressed frustrations over his inability to have a relationship with women.

I feel awful for everyone including his folks. He lived with them till he was 35, they constantly visited him and lost all contact when he went off his meds.

The story was also a reminder not to spread every internet rumour you read online. Thankfully this is a Pro Wrestling board so no harm, no foul but the internet detectives tried to do their own sleuthing and identified the wrong man. Of course one of our major networks ran with the story before they quietly retracted it.

Horrible. I feel for everyone affected. Just tragic.

We are seeing an uptick in violence in Canada as well.

Many are mental health situations gone wrong. Unmonitored, self medicating or off their meds leading to terrible outcomes. I don't know what the answer is (well I do, but no one is willing to entertain the undertaking and money it will cost), but right now I just feel like the all the systems put in place to prevent stuff like this are failing and we're descending into chaos.
