I only played it to test it out for the PW Arcade monthly edition but I’m definitely keen to try and beat it (and die of Dysentery in the process).

Has anybody checked out the Gaming Historian's doc on Oregon Trail? It's definitely worth a watch.

Oregon Trail is retro even for my standards. I can't say it's ever appealed to me much.

I was in in-school suspension in 8th grade where if you get in trouble you get locked in a portable building all day, they had old dinosaur computers in there where I found this game buried on one of the hard drives, I would name the characters after Pantera members and their roadies from the home video

Oregon Trail is legendary among my generation. Why? Because we got to play it at school. Playing a video game during class is a fool-proof way of it getting over. Same reason my brother's generation was all about Carmen Sandiego (which I never got to play at school ). My brother had a "You Have Died of Dysentery" shirt and you can always tell what got over with me because I would incorporate it into my wrestling figure leagues. I literally had a character called Mr. Oregon. Not to mention half a dozen other "Pioneer" characters in my 92-95 league. Babyface roster was all Pioneers, Explorers, Miners, Lumberjacks, and other "grizzled" types. The little-known Oregon Trail II is waaaaay better though. It was like the chess to OG Oregon Trail's checkers. Better graphics. Infinitely more in depth. More gruesome ways to die. Just better in every possible way. Anybody ever play that one? It was one of the....5 computer games we had and now I want to write about all of them. To the Retro Gaming thread I go!

The little-known Oregon Trail II is waaaaay better though. Feel obligated to expand on this. Original Oregon Trail was fun, but real basic. II had so much more. You could start at different times and from different locations. This affected your journey as some towns and forts would only pop up in later years. Iirc most of the starting locations were in Kansas & Missouri while some of the end destinations weren't even in Oregon. Remember something about rapids at the end. Like I think you had to ride the rapids to win. At least in one of the end destinations? This one also had 'experience' and 'job' features that would give your main character different attributes. You could start as, say, a banker with extra money or a doctor with extra healing skills. You could be a greenhorn or an adventurer. There were also a lot more diseases. It wasn't just dysentery. It was far, far worse. Remember typhoid being the bane of my existence. That and stupid broken wheel axles. There was also a ton of stuff you could buy. This involved a lot of trial & error. There were certain items you had to have if you wanted to get anywhere. Ngl. I want to find a way to play OT2 again right now lol.
