It obviously still happens, but I think it's pretty safe to assume there is at least a stigma surrounding it these days. Last time I experienced it in public was at my last job when some kid was getting whooped in the store. Just averted eye contact so I wasn't next... <_< We're all sorta similar age demographics (~5-10 yrish) so would you say this generation was when it started being looked down as maybe not good? Did your parents ever hit you like that? Is it a religious thing because my household def relied on fear of retaliation for a lot of parenting. One of those situations where you can't quite tell if their "I'll give you something to call about" line was sarcasm or not...

My parents were big on spanking me, I got whacked all the time and I don't think it has a good effect. I am not opposed to it in certain circumstances.
If a little kid is about to run onto the road and you grab them before they do and give them a tap on the backside, I think it can be a powerful re-enforcement of ensuring they never do that again with the way pathways are formed in the brain. Spanking a kid because they accidentally broke a lamp doesn't do anything but cause resentment.
It is also a case that all kids are different and the approach needs to be catered to the child. Generally I am definitely not an advocate for spanking, but there is definitely not enough discipline with kids today and in many ways the outcomes of no discipline are worse than the outcomes of too much.

I got spanked three times as a kid. And sure did I ever remember it!
Mrs Foos and I recently talked with Foos Jr about spankings. Not sure why it came up but told him about it, the history of it that we knew, and the promise that we'd never do it to him.
There are so many better ways to discipline your child than physically hurting them.

I find it unreal the US still not banned paddling in public schools in all places. It's been illegal here since the late 70's early 80's. I am not opposed to sometimes some form of minor physical discipline if enacted by a loving parent in a calm and controlled way. I absolutely don't support teachers and people who have no emotional connection to the children inflicting physical discipline upon them. It would also be okay with me if all parental physical discipline was banned if it helped to protect children from abuse scenarios. Where it is all screwed up for me is though I love my parents, they were very heavy on me as a kid. I was smacked on ass only ever by my Dad with his hand or my Mum with the wooden spooon. But it was by far the mental and emotional scars that damaged me more. Please people, never ever tell your kids you are ashamed of them... One thing I always make a point of with my girls is addressing the behaviour not them as a person. I can say that I was disappointed in the choice they made or that their action was bad, but I NEVER EVER would say that they were bad or that I was ashamed of them or make a reflection on them being a bad person. Once you cause shame you only damage, you don't help.

It needs to be banned in the states. In many areas of the US it is still commonplace to whip your kids with a leather belt until they bleed. Schools in these areas will still beat kids with basically a cricket bat. In schools predominately black girls that get paddled as well. Then boy blacks, white girls and rarely white boys.
Think estimates were 70k kids are still paddled in the US last year, mostly in eight southern states with the primary reason being not showing a teacher the proper respect. The schools doing the majority have a policy of only hitting a hit three times per day, which they do daily to certain students of color. Moreso we are finding when schools are banned from beating disabled students, rates drop 70% to 90% percent. At least if the counts are accurate, which many no longer believe is the case.
Parents can opt out, but only if they follow a procedure of handwriting a reason and handing it directly to the proper administrative people within the first week of school. And then, if the schools still wish to paddle the kids, they can get a court order to do so, which they often do, that allows the school to paddle your kids dispute your opposition.
The irony of all this is of course that once that child is 18 it is no longer legal to use any corporal punishment against them as per laws that state is is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. But when they are younger, it is just part of life in the US South. We called social services in Georgia when a kid's mom slapped her daughter across her dragged her by hair during an argument. They said they saw nothing wrong being done and told us a little roughness is needed with kids down here. Girl had scars all on her side from being belted she later showed us. But in the South this acceptable behavior from parents. We are told police will only step in if bones are broken or the kids had a cut that would not close on it's own.
