I know Forbidden Door is technically an AEW PPV but it still makes no sense to me that he doesn't want to do one over there. Okada, White and Ospreay are draws there. And they're all AEW guys now. It would be an amazing scene to have them returning to Japan working for another company.

NJPW must not want to let AEW run a big PPV there using their guys. Only thing I can think of that makes sense. So if they do a AEWxNJPW show in Tokyo or Osaka, then what do you call it? Even More Forbidden Door?

I’d imagine it could be a huge letdown due to NJPW unwillingness to get their guys beat in Japan. It’s one thing for them to lose over here, but it would really hurt to beat them over there.

Do Japanese fans really care if their guys lose in a PPV whose canonical status is slightly questionable? Surely wrestling's scripted nature has to be known worldwide now.

also slightly unhinged take: Forbidden Door is becoming like WWE's Hell in a Cell, where it would be a huge deal if these almost never happened, but is becoming routine "oh it's that time of year again" and pretty watered down as a result

My take was Tony did not want to run the show in Japan. It would hardly be a Forbidden Door to run a show in Japan that Japanese wrestlers worked either. Tony made a point that the name was the issue, not running a show in Japan or sending a bunch of people to work NJPW.

I don't mind the concept, but you know... the three biggest stars from NJPW are all signed to AEW now, so it hardly makes sense running an AEW x or vs NJPW show and acting like some forbidden door has been broken down.... and you know, Mox is the IWGP Champ, so if there is a forbidden door, it's got a terrible lock on it.

Maybe, instead of an exclusive NJPW cross over, make it an open invitational. As it's also a great way to test out and introduce new talent. Ie; announce The Bucks have a match at " Forbidden Door " and it's going to be an open invitational = MCMG debut.
