Yes yet another one of these threads. So next month I’m going to see Iron Maiden (Not to be confused with iron maiden) as their show is on one off my nights off. But System I thought you didn’t like Maiden, especially the vocals? Well I figured I’d take the chance to see them before they call it a day and will see if the rest of the discography may win me over.

Iron Maiden(1980) Track List (2015 Remaster) 1. Prowler 2. Remember Tomorrow 3. Running Free 4. Phantom of the Opera 5. Transylvania 6. Strange World 7. Charlotte the Harlot 8. Iron Maiden Like many albums that were around before the CD became the mainstream way to consume music, there’s many different versions of this and track listings. I prefer to listen to whatever the original was but with stuff like this you just have to take what you can get. So the 2015 Remaster on Tidal is what I’m working with. What a great debut, the first two tracks absolutely pulled me in especially with Remember tomorrow. This is with original vocalist Paul Di’Anno so not the signature style Maiden is most well known for. I’ve read that Iron Maiden said this has production issues but I can’t the remaster seems to have fixed that as the instrumentation sounds amazing and mixed well. I didn’t care too much for Charlotte the Harlot or the title track but other than that this is a great start. Also one of the tracks (I’ll edit in later) sounds like King K Rool’s theme in DKC 1: Guess David Wise was a big Maiden fan  Rating 8/10

The Paul Di'Anno era is underrated in my opinion. He's not the greatest vocalist, and understandably overshadowed by a GOAT in Bruce Dickinson. However the music is on point, the way the songs are constructed, they were way ahead of their peers.

I had a blast doing this back in 2016 on the old PW. I was never really a fan of Iron Maiden until I did that. Number Of The Beast has my favorite track of theirs, Hallowed Be Thy Name, the perfect heavy metal song ever written. But I find Number Of The Beast to be pretty overrated and not on the level of the 4 albums that followed it. Still just an incredible run of albums there from Number Of The Beast to Seventh Son, 5 albums that were all excellent, not a lot of heavy metal bands can really claim that level of consistency. Best I can compare to that would be the cali-reggae band Rebelution had a similar run of greatness with 5 stellar albums put out from 2009 to 2018.
Piece Of Mind was my favorite album at the end of that thread(I found it to be an excellent album for the gym) when I finished but I think I've really come around to Somewhere In Time as my favorite, love the whole atmosphere and tone of that album, one of my favorite 80s metal albums for sure. I'd love to own some of these on vinyl.

Killers (1981) Track List (2015 Remaster) 1. The Ides of March 2. Wrathchild 3. Murders in the Rue Morgue 4. Another Life 5. Gengis Khan 6. Innocent Exile 7. Killers 8. Prodigal Son 9. Purgatory 10. Drifter Same spiel about the track listing as in the previous post. Didn’t care for this one too much. Prodigal Son and Gengis Khan were the highlight tracks for me. I don’t mind instrumental tracks or music for that matter but they did little to win me over. The debut seemed much more ambitious and varied in comparison to this. Rating 4/10

The Number of the Beast (1982) Track List (1998 Re-Issue) 1. Invaders 2. Children of the Damned 3. The Prisoners 4. 22 Acacia Avenue 5. The Number of the Beast 6. Run to the Hills 7. Gangland 8. Total Eclipse 9. Hallowed be thy Name Copy/paste from System Review’s 100 albums thread: My dad owned this on vinyl, I think he got rid of all his collection which is a shame as he probably had original pressing of a lot of stuff before the vinyl revival. As I’ve mentioned numerous times I have little to no musical knowledge. So you could tell me someone is the best/worst drummer because of xyz and I’ll take your word for it. Because of that the vocal style of an artist/band is the main selling point for me. Instrumentals sound great, lyrics have great storytelling but I just can’t get into Bruce Dickenson’s vocal style. Also I didn’t know they have had multiple vocalists? I had a quick listen and all in similar vein. Same with the band Manowar i can’t get into the operatic style. Keep in mind I love black metal so the irony isn’t lost on me when Black Metal vocals sound like throat surgery gone wrong: I can’t deny Run to the Hills & number of the beasts are iconic tracks but like iron maiden I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Iron Maiden. Piece of Mind(1983) Track List 1. Where Eagles Dare 2. Revelations 3. Fight of Icarus 4. Die with Your Boots On 5. The Trooper 6. Still Life 7. Quest for Fire 8. Sun and Steel 9. To Tame a Land I’m slowly adjusting to Bruce Dickinson’s vocals, this being the second album replacing Paul Di’Anno. Also first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain who is still their drummer to this day. I really enjoyed this, Sun and Steel was the only track I didn’t care for mainly for the vocal delivery. instrumentation and solos were much more interesting on this. Some absolutely great tracks in the opener Where Eagles Dare, Revelations & The Trooper. As well as the brilliant opener “To Tame a Land” originally titled Dune and based on said property. Many influences from literature and film to be seen all across this album. Rating 9/10

Powerslave (1984) Track List (2015 Remaster) 1. Aces High 2. 2 Minutes to Midnight 3. Losfer Words 4. Flash of the Blade 5. The Duellists 6. Back in the Village 7. Powerslave 8. Rime of the Ancient Mariner This album slaps. I saw the runtime and was concerned as you start getting later into the 80s a lot of stuff gets stuffed with filler just so people can marvel at the compact disc. Luckily that wasn’t reportedly the main thing yet (not that I was there, I’m only as old as the Nirvana baby) as there is no filler to be had here at all. Just banger after banger. 2 minutes to Midnight, Flash of the Blade, Powerslave are all fantastic. The closing track is new for the band with a 13 minute track to close off the album and this was the final showdown at the end of the film that nicely caps off all the other duels earlier in the album. Somewhere in Time (1986) Track List 1. Caught Somewhere in Time 2. Wasted Years 3. Sea of Madness 4. Heaven Can Wait 5. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner 6. Stranger in a Strange Land 7. Deja-Vu 8. Alexander the Great Similar to Powerslave introducing longer tracks and a longer run time overall. However this time one of two tracks do outsay their welcome but overall it’s an enjoyable listen. Caught Somewhere in Time is a brilliant opener, Sea of Madness is great but the highlight of the entire album for me was “Alexander the Great” in an absolutely epic closing track. Rating 7/10

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988) Track List 1. Moonchild 2. Infinite Dreams 3. Can I Play With Madness 4. The Evil That Men Do 5. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 6. The Prophecy 7. The Clairvoyant 8. Only the Good Die Young The 7th album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son released in…1988, This time goes in a more progressive metal direction. Based on folklore and inspired by the Orson Scott Card novel “Seventh Son” (side note: I still need to read Ender’s Game) this is definitely a new approach to their music. It’s nothing mind blowing as you can imagine taking their few steps in a new direction but it’s a welcome change and I’m curious to see where things go from here. The drums on this album kinda weak, can’t quite put my finger on how to describe it. I know the next album was critically planned so I’m cautiously optimistic  Favourite Tracks were MoonChild and The Prophecy Rating 6/10

I loved both of these albums Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son, love what they evolved into and how they matured into this. I'm definitely jamming these in the gym next week starting with Number Of The Beast on Monday and ending with Seventh Son on Friday leg session brah, great thread bubba.
I wasn't a big fan of any of the albums after this, except for their return album in 2000 I forgot the name of that but that was a good one too. They got a little corny for my tastes and lost their vibe, just now remembering they did an album or two with another singer? Those were really bad. But man what a hell of a run there through the 80's, 5 really high level albums in the 9/10 out of 10 range all released within 7 year period is quite an accomplishment. Can we think of any other metal bands that were able to put that level of quality out? Metallica's epic 5 album stretch was over 9 years period.
After this you should go through all the Black Sabbath albums I remember that was good time too. I'd love to revisit some of the post-Ozzy era albums.

No Prayer for the Dying(1990) Track List 1. Tailgunner 2. Holy Smoke 3. No Prayer for the Dying 4. Public Enema Number One 5. Fates Warning 6. The Assassin 7. Run Silent Run Deep 8. Hooks in You 9. Bring your daughter…To the Slaughter 10. Mother Russia Guitarist Adrian Smith left the band during the pre-production (only having a credit on “Hooks in You) due to being unhappy with the direction the band was taking. Which in perplexed by as this just sounds like the same old stuff but just generic & less inspired. Mother Russia was by far the best track on the album. I was hoping for more of the progressive side of things from the last album, while it wasn’t great it seemed like a step into something new that was going to be improved upon. Instead back to Iron Maiden by numbers. I also think System Senior owned this too, hard to tell with all the different Eddie’s. Rating 3/10

Fear of the Dark(1992) Track List 1. Be Quick or be Dead 2. From Here to Eternity 3. Afraid to shoot Strangers 4. Fear is the Key 5. Childhood’s End 6. Wasting Love 7. The Fugitive 8. Chains of Misery 9. The Apparition 10. Judas be my Guide 11. Weekend Warrior 12. Fear of the Dark You know that moment when you’re enjoying a film things seem to be wrapping up nicely then there is somehow another hour left? That’s this album. It’s only just under an hour but felt way longer towards the end, especially with Fear of the Dark ending the trend of great closing tracks. The first half of the album I really enjoyed and this is definitely a darker and more sombre album. Not that past albums have been all sunshine but I find with bands like this and others of the same era there’s a sense of humour alongside the darkness unlike some stuff in the 90s. (Antichrist Superstar for example). Still a refreshing album after the dud that came before it. “Afraid to Shoot Strangers” is one of the best tracks so far. Rating 7/10

I've not listened to their first two albums in a long time, I'm especially curious given you ranked Killers so low compared to Iron Maiden. I'll give them a play in the next week and share my thoughts. My view of 80s Maiden is that they peaked with Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind, which I consider to be 1a and 1b. If given a choice I'd rank Number of the Beast higher. Hallowed By Thy Name alone is better than most heavy metal albums. However Piece of Mind is slightly stronger from an instrumental point of view, as System pointed out. Where Eagles Dare has phenomenal drumming and riffs. Revelations has great instrumental passages. Two Minutes to Midnight has a brilliant middle section. From them on it's a gradual downhill trend. Powerslave is a little more fillery than Piece of Mind. Somewhere In Time even more so. I only really like the first two tracks from that album, the rest is pretty forgettable. Seventh Son is the last of the 80s Maiden albums I have in rotation. It holds a special place in my heart because Can I Play With Madness? is the song responsible for me liking heavy metal in the first place. From their early 90s albums the only tracks worth a damn are Bring your Daughter...To the Slaughter and Fear of the Dark, and even the latter is only worth a damn live. A brilliant live song that is merely good in studio. The long tracks on the 80s albums ( To Tame a Land, Alexander the Great, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Rime of the Ancient Mariner) are super boring, the vocal lines are uninteresting, there a few hooks and the songs just go nowhere. Maiden's output post-Brave New World is that style of metal over and over again. Music to cure insomnia, in my opinion. I'd rather listen to black metal, which I strongly dislike but it's at least interesting. As well as the brilliant opener “To Tame a Land” originally titled Dune and based on said property. Many influences from literature and film to be seen all across this album. That and most other albums. The debut has Phantom of the Opera and Transylvania (Dracula). Killers has Murders in the Rue Morgue which is an Edgar Allan Poe story, and so on. It's one of their trademarks.

The X Factor(1995) 1. Sign of the Cross 2. Lord of the Flies 3. Man on the Edge 4. Fortunes of War 5. Look for the Truth 6. The Aftermath 7. Judgement of Heaven 8. Blood on the World’s Hand 9. The Edge of Darkness 10. 2 AM 11. The Unbeliever The other day I asked my mate if he wanted to catch up for lunch. He said sure and asked if I could do him a favour and sent me a picture of a shovel. Hesitantly I asked what it is hoping he didn’t want a hand digging for hours or something of that nature. Instead he just wanted me to pick up a shovel for him as I live much closer to said store he wanted it from than he does. So I set out and got it this morning, the self-service kiosk played up so got the dreaded “assistance needed” sign. 1 dead body joke. Upon leaving I then bump into my mate (& the manager of the forever 600 champion, Barry Blake) who popped the dead body count joke up to two. Work then calls me to tell me my deliver came but they had to show ID for it (??) as I’ve had to get my mail delivered to my work place as AusPost somehow can’t find my place that’s on a major highway and I saw the Postie driving along today. They also delivered someone else’s mail to my place (not really their fault the address they listed doesn’t exist) so RIP to them I guess. What does this have to do with Iron Maiden? Nothing. Just like this album sounding anything like IM of the past. I know this is the third vocalist they’ve had for the band but at this point Bruce was a crucial part of the Iron Maiden everyone knew and loved. Nothing wrong with Blaze Bayley’s vocals but much like the two Blink 182 albums without Tom Delonge it is not the same. Steve Harris was reportedly going through a divorce at the time hence the dark lyrics but it feels like an attempt to cash in on the alternative scene. Reminds me of the scene in “The Wrestler” where they say “fuck the 90s” complaining about this decades rock music being depressing and whiny. So I can see why bands like this struggled in this era as the rock scene changed into something else. The album is just dull and dreary and at 70 mins is way too long. Blood on the World’s hand is the only track I even had any remote interest in. Rating 1/10

Virtual XI(1998) 1. Futureal 2. The Angel and the Gambler 3. Lightning Strikes Twice 4. The Clansmen 5. When Two Worlds Collide 6. The Educated Fool 7. Don’t Look Into The Eyes of a Stranger 8. Como Estais Amigos This at least somewhat resembles an Iron Maiden (from Temu) with similar song structure and themes. I thought as a stand-alone album this had some pretty good tracks with the closing track and 7 being enjoyable and The Clansmen being the best on the album. It’s not going to scratch your Iron Maiden itch if you’re after something like Powerslave or Number of the Beast but it is at least an attempt to use the Iron Maiden blueprint rather than the last album which was IM in name only. Brave New World(2000) 1. The Wicker Man 2. Ghost of the Navigator 3. Brave New World 4. Blood Brothers 5. The Mercenary 6. Dream of Mirrors 7. The Fallen Angel 8. The Nomad 9. Out of the Silent Planet 10. The Thin Line between Love and Hate Bruce Dickinson and Adrian smith are back (with Blaze Bayley no longer on vocals). Is Bruce’s comeback a Triple H in 02 situation or a Lord Tensai situation? It’s the former. Definite return to form and this is coming from someone who took a lot of warning up to his style. The album was recorded as a six piece and it definitely gives it a more epic and grandiose style. I didn’t care for Blood Brothers too much but the rest of this was fantastic, a slight update to their sound but still Iron Maiden at its core, rather than “The X Factor”. It takes the doom & gloom from the Bayley albums but gives it the Iron Maiden touch so there’s a little bit of fun to be had. The long epic tracks are this albums bread and butter, with some nice surprises along the way like the last track. My favourites are 4,5,7,8 but not a track on here I didn’t love. The Paul Di'Anno EraI'm not doing a full discography review but I haven't heard the first two albums in a while so I gave them a listen. ----------------------- Iron Maiden's self-titled debut opens with Prowler, a brilliant track that showcases the best of this era of Maiden. Punchy riffs, interesting and audible bass lines, energetic vocal lines and rhythms. The highlight is the build to the guitar solo, and the solo itself. Sublime musicianship. However, the album is not banger after banger. Second track Sanctuary takes on a different tone, the main riff has a rock 'n' roll feel that doesn't really work. Fortunately, the style is not repeated. The next three tracks are quite dynamic with some softer sections. The instrumental sections are on point, as always. Strong songwriting with nice transitions. A highlight across all the tracks is the bass lines: they sound clear and often diverge from the guitars, an audial experience that is rare in the metal genre. I'm not normally fond of metal instrumentals but Transylvania is a pretty entertaining track, unsurprising given their sterngth in instrumetal sections. The final two tracks are relatively straightforward snappy songs in the style of Prowler, but not as exciting. I've yet to talk about the vocals. Paul Di'Anno is adequate at best. His raspy semi-controlled vocals are fine for tracks like Prowler and Iron Maiden, and he even does a decent job in the quieter opening minutes of Remember Tomorrow, but he is exposed in Charlotte The Harlot in a soft section where he sings over Harris' bass. It's intended to be a tender part of the song but his voice is not up to the task. Makes me wonder how it sounds with Bruce Dickinson's voice. At this point I scroll up to see System's score and notice that his tracklist does not have Sanctuary. Fascinating! I must have a remastered version with the extra track. I was ready to score 6/10, but without that dud of a track, it's 7/10. A great album which is always interesting, but it has some flaws and peaks at the very beginning. ----------------------- Moving on to Killers. When I first saw System's low opinion of the second record I was surprised, because in my mind both albums were a similar quality. Somewhat surprisingly, I enjoyed Killers far more than the self-titled debut, for the same reason System disliked it. It's less varied. Iron Maiden was quite experimental, they played around with slower and softer tracks. Killers mostly does away with that and focuses more on the fast, riff-based tunes with amazing instrumentation. The Ides of March/Wrathchild is a great one-two to kick off the album, and it keeps on chugging from there. Almost every track is in the style of Prowler from the first album. Fats, snappy, exciting bass lines, brilliant transitions and instrumentals. Di'Anno's vocals are slightly punchier and rawer than the first album. It's a small but noticeable difference. Genghis Khan trumps Transylvania as far as Maiden instrumentals go. It was heading to a perfect 10/10 score but after the phenomenal title track the album takes a downturn with Prodigal Son and Purgatory. Prodigal Son is the one slower song on the album. Di'Anno's vocals are fine but to me the track is just boring (sorry System). Purgatory is another duffer, but the album ends on a high note with Drifter. 9/10, a great album leading into their peak period with Bruce Dickinson at the helm.

The Man Who Would be King is a great track as it’s The Talisman but the rest of this back to being paint by numbers Iron Maiden. The drumming got really grating on one of the tracks too Rating 6/10

Surely System is going to complain about the run time like he always does? Not the case in this one, kept my interest for all of its mammoth run time. I didn’t like Death or Glory too much but other than that this album can definitely hang with the likes of “The Fragile” & “Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness” as far as great double albums go. Very similar to a Matter of Life and Death with long epic tracks again, my favourites being “if Eternity should fail”, “When the River runs Deep” and the amazing 17 minute closer “Empire of the Clouds” Rating 9/10

Interesting story about the making of The Book of Souls.
Bruce Dickenson held off getting treatment for throat cancer, to do this album.
By the time he finished and went for treatment, it was at Stage 4. A pretty dire spot to be in. Pretty low chance of survival at that stage. And even if he made it, his singing career may still have been in jeopardy.
Amazingly, the treatments were a success, and he is still cancer free! AND, his voice was all still there.

I listened to their 5 key albums this week on my rides to work in the mornings, did Number of the Beast on Monday, Piece of Mind on Tuesday, Powerslave on Wednesday, Somewhere in Time on Thursday, and did Seventh Son this morning. That was fun. I'm not sure why I was so high on Time and Seventh Son back when I first went through these there are some stinkers on there. Bruce Dickenson's singing is truly awful sometimes for sure however blasphemous that may be there are just times where he sounds like nails on a chalk board to me, just the corniest vocal lines and lyrics even by 80's metal standards. But still some good times to be had on both albums especially with the guitars.
I will say Hallowed Be Thy Name is a really special song. I've praised this song a lot already but have to emphasize that for 1982 this song was really at the cutting edge of heavy metal music and a sonic key in the whole evolution of that genre. It's crazy that I never heard this until 2016 in all of my years of being a metal fan growing up, never really read any praise for it in the metal magazines that I can remember. But man when you think about where Metal was at prior to 1982, how popular it got as a phrase, an idea, a meme if you will from 1979 up to when that album came out in 1982. Think about what heavy music was like prior to 1978-79 and how it was produced and recorded, think about how this was before even the first Metallica album came out, they really captured lightning in a bottle with Hallowed Be Thy Name and pushed that whole genre forward from where they picked it up from Sabbath and Diamond Head and Priest and what those bands were doing before them. It is truly the most perfect 80's metal song and one of the best metal songs ever still.

I feel the same way and was my initial block of even getting into the band. Same with Rush and Manowar I definitely need to warm up the vocals, then again this is coming from a Smashing Pumpkins fan so I can’t really talk

Tailgunner and Heaven Can Wait are examples of Bruce Dickenson vocals that I cant stand, cant get to the skip button fast enough. As a teen that grew up with mid to late 90's screamy metal I always thought the singers of the 80's sounded kind of gay, the high pitch singing was just not something I could understand how that was ever cool with metal heads. But it was a different time. Now since I've gone back and understand how that genre evolved I appreciate that vocal style a lot more, they were harmonizing over those guitars(the good ones at least), it was it's own style. You can hear Phil doing some of that on the first Pantera album Cowboys a lot but he evolved away from that within one album by 92 that was gone, he didn't even try to sing those songs like that anymore when they played them live like Cemetary Gates on the live album.

Senjutsu(2021) Track List Disc One 1. Senjutsu 2. Stratego 3. The writing on the Wall 4. Lost in a Lost World 5. Days of Future Past 6. The Time Machine Disc Two 7. The Darkest Hour 8. Death of the Celts 9. The Parchment 10. Hell on Earth I’d be looking forward to this, as not only is it the final album in the catalogue (as of writing) I’d always see it on vinyl at JB Hi-Fi (like Best Buy) and thought the cover looked really cool. Sadly this was a big disappointment after such highs as “Matter of Life and Death” and “The Book of Souls”. I as expecting something on part with the later but instead the first disc of this is an absolute slog to get through. Steve Harris has some written credits here as he does on Virtual XI, maybe I’m just not a Harris mark  Things do pick up a lot with the second disc as the first 3 tracks are quite good and the last track is still serviceable but it doesn’t make up for the dull first disc. I like progressive rock when there’s a reason for it rather than tracks just being long tracks for the sake of it. Rating 4/10

This man is a machine, System is appropriate. Thought about doing my own (not a bunch just 1 or 2) but not sure I got the stamina. Will go back to lurking in the ones that are over with me.
